IRLmaxxing | Powering white-labeled dinner clubs (dnnr.io). Hosting Freedom Summit Aug 20-21 in NH (freedomsummit.tech)

Portsmouth, NH
“Community” has become the most overused word on the internet. But a community isn’t a group chat. It’s people — sitting across from each other, sharing a meal. 🚀 That’s why today we’re launching something big: DNNR (pronounced dinner) A white-labeled dinner club engine that lets any creator, community, or brand bring launch their own dinner club — in one city or around the world 🥂 What makes it special You customize your club page and short personality quiz — then all you have to do is announce it. Your audience takes the quiz, pays to book a seat, and our matching engine does the rest: Tables of six, smartly matched, in restaurants revealed the morning of. After dinner, everyone meets up for cocktails with the other tables. It’s part dinner party, part mystery, part social magic. The algorithm is yours — customized to your community — and the night unfolds like a beautiful game of clue. Compared to meetups, something wild happens: Because people pay, everyone shows up. Because it’s dinner (not networking), everyone shows up *on time*. And because they already share something in common, every table feels like it was meant to be. 🧠 Why it works There’s something ancient about breaking bread together. We’ve been gathering around the table for thousands of years — it’s the oldest technology for human connection. DNNR makes it effortless. We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from years of building meetup communities and made it plug-and-play: the restaurant reservations, the group matching, the reminders — all handled. 💸 For creators, communities, and brands We’ve been quietly testing this with a handful of communities — and it’s thriving. Dinners are selling out. People are having incredible experiences. And for creators, it’s become a meaningful new income stream. When your audience is local, you don’t need millions of followers to make it work — just a few hundred people in one place and a reason to meet. You’re not pushing ads, not hawking merch. You’re creating belonging — and getting paid for it. It supports local restaurants, strengthens communities, and makes your brand tangible. 🌍 The movement begins Today we’re officially launching DNNR to the world. Five communities are already hosting monthly dinner clubs, and dozens more are lined up to announce. If you have an audience — even a small, local one — we’d love to help you build your own club. If you don’t, you can still be part of the movement through our affiliate program — earn 5% of first-year revenue from any dinner clubs you refer. We believe this is a step toward curing loneliness — not with another social event app, but with something truly social. Because belonging isn’t built online. It’s built at the table. DNNR — Send your audience to dinner and build belonging that pays 👉 Visit dnnr dot io to join our affiliate program or book a demo.

Ryan and I got married in 2008 when I was 21 and he was 23. Everyone thought we were dumb. We shared a cell phone (razor flip) and couldn’t afford internet at home so I did my college homework at the public library. Been married 17 years and I’m still completely in love with him. We’ve lived and traveled the world, started a startup, and are having a blast.
“The one thing money can’t buy,” said Luckey, “is people who liked you before you had money. I’m very lucky that I met my wife back when I had literally nothing. When we met, I had less than $300 in my bank account … I probably should have gotten married, should have married her when I was 16. Looking back, I think that’s probably my radical belief.” tabletmag.com/feature/americ…

Was looking for how long this rape occurred. Apparently 5-7 minutes, but Swedish court requires 10 minutes of rape to considered "exceptionally serious offense". The average time for a man to ejaculate during sexual intercourse varies depending on the study and methodology, but research generally points to a range of 5 to 6 minutes. WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE DOING!?!?! Stop this madness. It's infuriating.

A little sad but, after watching women in family, my goal was to never keep a boyfriend around just because I needed help with bills. Got a job at 14 and never was in that situation. That was making it for me. Had more “making it” things since but that was the first one

Every year Ryan and I host an epic Christmas party. We rent real dishes, decorate beautifully, buy/prep the food, hire helpers to execute dinner, do latin dance performances, print out song books to accompany our christmas carol singalong to an 8-piece live band AND I SWEAR TO GOD THE HARDEST PART IS GETTING PEOPLE TO RSVP ACCURATELY

Meanwhile in Miami, my phone was stolen out of a restaurant bathroom (I forgot it there). Tracked it, called police. They immediately came and banged on the door but no one answered. Next morning, phone still there so I called police again. They immediately came and banged on the door. This time they got my phone back. In SF they would just hang up on you.

We raised a $1.6M pre-seed round! At @getriver_io we're building an events platform for global brands to let members from their community host on their behalf. We're thrilled to partner with @bwcvc, @blockwall_vc, @BFC_VC, @LAUNCH, @veryearlyxyz, and @SolanaFndn for our pre-seed round. 15 months ago I had an insight while building community for The All-In Podcast. I couldn’t find an event platform that would let fans host their own events without data sharing issues and tons of work for me as the organizer. So @Jason suggested we build one. He invested an angle check along with @balajis . We’re super proud of how much we built this past year with just $150k. Our MVP has powered community events for @theallinpod , @myfirstmilpod, @tferriss, @bryan_johnson, @daveasprey, @superteam, @SolanaFndn, @DeGodsNFT, and more. We’ve already had over 2,000 events, produced by 3,000 crowd-sourced hosts with 55k attendees. These community events have happened in over 150 cities around the world. All with a *tiny fraction* of the planning effort of other event platforms because River lets the COMMUNITY produce the events. We’re so excited to build IRL community at a massive scale in a way that’s never been done before and we’d love to have you follow along. Could River help your community? → @tferriss used River to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his podcast by bringing 4k fans together in 150+ cities on a single day → @superteam uses River to host 100+ IRL watch parties during their live stream of the Solana Ecosystem Call *every month* → @twistartups uses River to host Founder Fridays jam sessions each month around the world (founders only!) → @theallinpod had 20+ unofficial side events around All-In Summit in LA and hosts worldwide meetups to celebrate episode milestones. More use cases around paid events and paid membership subscriptions coming soon! BACK TO BUILDING 🚀

🎂 I turn 38 today. Never imagined my life would turn out like it has. Born in Maine to a single mom on food stamps. Grades weren't great. Went to a state school, took me 5 years to finish my finance degree. But I worked hard, followed my curiosity, and took risks. Married the love of my life @Ryan_G_Lambert in 2008. In 2012, we moved to San Francisco site unseen and got jobs at startups. I learned from the very best. Ran a marketing agency. Then one day, I started trying to get people together around the world. @Jason noticed. I didn't have a single line of code or a pitch deck. Just an Airtable, my friend @anariverasch, and sheer will. He offered me $100k to build what is now River (@getriver_io). That was almost 2 years ago. We've since closed a pre-seed round. Look I'm not saying raising VC money makes me successful. It's just one tiny part of building a real business. But believe me when I say this was not on my bingo card. I started my life with *low* expectations. To build a life, a community, and a company I love is a huge gift. Even though it may not work out how I hope, that's a good thing. Because so far it's already bigger and better than I imagined. My advice? Follow your curiosity. Be good to people. Work hard to make something only you can. As Ryan says: Have fun trying. You never know where it might lead. Thanks to everyone who has made my 38 years on Earth a wild ride. 🙏

Eat and mingle for a while. then go for a 45 minute walk on the rail trail near our house. All are welcome - kid/dog friendly. Very cheap, very easy. Consistency is the key.

As someone who hosts a lot, I know it's a ton of work and not everyone has a good setup for hosting. - I have a husband who helps with *everything* - We're great cooks, work well together to host - We have lots of dishes and things conducive to hosting - We generally keep our home clean and "vibey" so it's not a big deal to have people over I don't expect people to reciprocate with hosting, BUT I do expect you to be a good guest, which not everyone knows good etiquette for. Some tips for being a great guest: - Show up on time and dressed appropriately — if it's dressy, dress up! Don't like the theme? Don't go. - Never come empty handed. Hosting costs a lot of money, much of it "unseen". Even if you're short on time or budget, grabbing a few bottles of sparkling water with some limes or a bag of ice is always welcome. - Pause 3 times throughout the event to look around and see what you can help with. Trash full? A few dishes in the sink? Empty plates around? Many hands make light work and the easier it is for the host, the more likely they will keep hosting. - Follow instructions. Maybe the host wants you to buzz them from the lobby using the call box instead of texting them. Maybe they want you to RSVP with a specific app. Just do it. Don't make them do more work than they already are. - Review the plans and ask questions ahead of time. Nothing more annoying than getting a bunch of texts right when I'm trying to set up with people asking me what to where or what to bring. I'm an experienced host so 99% chance I've already answered it in the event invite. Now it's crunch mode for me! - Realize that hosts get asked a million questions during an event. Before you ask, use your eyes, or ask someone besides the host that likely knows the answer. If you're too lazy to do these things or find yourself thinking "why can't they just xyz" then don't go to their house, use their stuff, drink their booze, and eat their food. I sound like I'm complaining but I'm not! I *LOVE* hosting. But I love hosting some people more than others. ❤️

It's a distributed community event platform that makes it easy for podcast fans to organize branded meetups and for top podcasters to connect with their fans. Solving my own problem with scaling @ALLIN_meetups to 6k members with events in 40+ cities To start, we’re hosting dozens of *unofficial* events around @allinsummit in LA and joining the next cohort of @LAUNCH Would love to have you follow along! I'm just coming up for air after a whirlwind week last week: @theallinpod meetups with travel to NYC, @tferriss meetups, a family funeral, and getting the flu — all while trying to fundraise and do sales. Tim's book, 4HWW literally changed my life. In 2012 I was miserable working in finance when my husband told me to read it. We learned what "silicon valley" was and it lead us to move to San Francisco site-unseen and change our careers (me from finance to marketing, him mechanical engineering to data science). Building River 12 yrs later and powering 188 fan meetups for him was a full circle moment! I facilitated call-ins to 40 cities and it was surprisingly moving. In just a few minutes, he was able to connect with people from literally all over the world. It was sweet to see the different cultures and personalities on display, and watch him adapt quickly, while always being himself. I learned a lot while tuning in: → You don't have to have direct experience to meaningfully learn. Observing people you respect, and really trying to understand them can be very powerful. Several people asked him parenting advice, and despite not having children, I thought he had wonderful insights to share. → A lot of people struggle with action. They learn and think a lot (and listen to tons of podcasts), but don't take the first/next step. His recommendation was to listen to episode #177 with Seth Godin and then go cold turkey on listening/learning until you complete your first action. → Tim is very clear and open about what he wants in life. He states it plainly and I can't help but think that this will have a way of manifesting itself into reality. Communicating what you desire helps other help you, and a shocking number of humans on this planet do actually want to help you, even if in a small way. Despite an exhausting & tough week, I ended the city call-ins with a full heart and a lot of perspective. So grateful to Tim for working with us to bring his community together IRL around the world! Thanks to @anariverasch and the whole @getriver_io team for making this a reality!
Today is the day! To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the podcast, fellow listeners are hosting meetups around the world! There are nearly 4,000 attendees RSVP’d on @getriver_io, and I’ll be raising a glass with you all. Find a meetup in your city here: tim.blog/meetups I’ve already seen amazing group pics from Sydney and Singapore, and things are just getting warmed up. There might be some surprises in store :) Find your nearest meetup here: tim.blog/meetups P.S. If you do attend, please take a photo, mention your city name, and tag me here!

Excited to see @theallinpod take things to the next level! I’d like to think @ALLIN_meetups was a small MVP of what community and events could become. Happy to help whoever gets the CEO role, and perhaps transition our unofficial community into an official one.
We’re looking for a CEO to run All In, which is currently the pod and summit, but we plan on expanding to a membership that would give access to series of events across the globe. I’m hoping we find someone with a background in hospitality and/or luxury brands, but we’re open to a range of candidates. allinpodcast.co/ceo-search

River 2.0 is here and live on @ProductHunt 🚀 We rebuilt River from the ground up to work for both massive global and hyper local communities. What's new: 🌍 Invite nearby community members – When you host an event within a community, you can automatically invite nearby community members. 🤝 Grow your following – When you host events inside a community, anyone who registers becomes your follower on River, and then you can invite them to your future events. 🚀 Host an event under your name – Run independent events under your own name and invite your followers directly, for free. We'd love your feedback and support on our launch! I'll post the link in the thread 👇 Thanks to @Jason for hunting us both on Product Hunt and in real life 😜 And thanks to all the communities and hosts who've been with us since the beginning while we figure out how to build an enterprise-grade event platform with consumer UX and vibes 🙏

🚀 PRODUCT LAUNCH: Today we’re launching @getriver_io — an in-person event platform to help distributed communities get together in real life. We’re helping The All-In Podcast, My First Million, and This Week in Startups turn their audiences into connected communities. But River is not just for podcasts — Latinx Tech Group is also getting together in real life on River, and soon dozens more will join. So far we’ve had 224 crowd-sourced hosts with 3,680 RSVPs 🤩 River makes it effortless to orchestrate events at scale with vetted, volunteer hosts. After producing events for The All-In Podcast, we’re coming out of beta and releasing self-serve community events. Despite being hyper-connected online, it’s increasingly difficult to meet people with shared interests and values. As I was growing All-In Meetups, a worldwide community of podcast fans getting together at fan-hosted meetups in 50 cities, I realized the current event platforms are great if you are personally hosting an event and already have the details figured out. But they aren’t built to let members apply to host (and control for quality and data privacy). So we built River. Here’s why: → Influencers & brands want to delight & engage their audience → Fans & community members want to meet like-minded people in their city → People will step up to host if they know great people will show up to the event → Sponsors will pay more for targeted in-person events than digital impressions Here’s what you can do on River: 🌎 Produce dozens of events without having to do any work → Create dozens of branded events with just a few clicks → Let your community RSVP or apply to host → Or let your community propose events for admin approval 🎯 Vet hosts & review events proposed by fans/members → Review host applications for events → Review events that fans/members propose → Once approved or rejected, applicants are notified via email & their permissions are updated 🤝 Empower hosts to produce great events with proper controls in place → Hosts can manage event details without being able to edit community or sponsor info → Hosts can send messages to attendees without accessing personal information → River collects feedback on hosts and venues to ensure quality over time 👯‍♀️ Let your fans/members meet like-minded people in their city → People within online micro-communities feel like they have “inside jokes with strangers” when they meet IRL → Hosts are able to build a lot of social capital while giving back to their community → People who connect in curated small groups are more likely to stay in touch than at big, generic tech events Find an event near you or bring your community together in real life on River! I'll post links in this thread. P.S. Thanks a million to @Jason @JacqKD and the whole team at @LAUNCH for investing in our pre-seed to make River a reality!

Sometimes new users comment about how we should be more like XYZ — all of whom have raised millions. Funding: → River $150k → Luma $3M → Posh $5M → Meetup $18M → Partiful $20M → Bevy $61M People are already switching from these platforms to River. We're getting people together IRL like never before. I'm so proud of what we've built with just $150k.

I know this is extremely ambitious, but I'm putting this out there just in case there is power in manifesting: Someday @Ryan_G_Lambert and I want to start a new town (network society) in rural New England, probably upstate New Hampshire. Many people want to live somewhere cheaper, but they don't want to give up on diversity of people, food, and experiences. This can be solved by going somewhere underdeveloped with a large group. Here's the plan: → Buy large chunk of property with mixed zoning → Seed it with 2 core businesses... Biz 1. "Hacker hotel". All inclusive resort for builders. A WeWork in the woods. Startup rituals, host summits etc. Great for team offsites and focussed building. Meals included, great coffee, lightning fast wifi, and tons of opportunities to get in nature and use your hands. Hotel serves as top of funnel for potential residents AND as a way to make the town more interesting for existing residents. I would run this. Biz 2. Something in hard tech run by Ryan. Bespoke manufacturing, robotics testing lab, R&D tech shop for prototyping... something like that. → Totally free market capitalism with it's own voting/governance. Not a commune. → People can buy land/condo/home that will be cheaper because it's rural, but without the downside of isolation or missing out on confluence. → Creative makers who are barely scrapping by in SF and Brooklyn would love it there. Interesting people, space to produce product, at a third of the cost. → Instead of a regular restaurant, we will do a high end food court with pop-up kitchens that chefs can use for a short time. Keeps the food variety high. I think 100 people of mixed skillsets, all with the intent of building something awesome could be enough to start. A surprising number of people we've talked to in-person seem legitimately interested. Will take a long time for someone like us to pull together, but watch this space. I intend for this tweet to age well. Curious thoughts/reactions! 👇

I'm not a technical founder, but I can: → Design product prototypes & brand assets in Figma → Create a website in Squarespace & install custom code snippets → Integrate Stripe on the website to drive revenue → Edit HTML and CSS in SendGrid transactional emails → Use the hell out of ChatGPT, Airtable, & Zapier → Make copy changes to the product in GitHub → Build a serious financial model and read a P&L So many tools out there for people who want to solve problems and sell to customers. We'll see "non-technical founders" who aren't "just idea guys" explode.

ahhh I guess I struck a nerve 😆 I love hosting, bringing people together, and creating memorable experiences. it's the chasing people that I hate! If you have friends who host: cherish them, rsvp quickly, and bring limes.

I started waitressing at 14. Throughout the week I would sit in every chair of the restaurant. When you sit in the seat you notice wobbly chairs, splattered ketchup in a weird place, or uncomfortable table heights (vs standing an taking orders). I tried all the food and all the wine. I would ask people what they thought and what could make their experience 10x better. By age 16 I was making $200/night with the best shifts. In today's dollars, that's $325/night or $54/hour. Now I check Intercom (our support messages) the moment I wake up. I build relationships with the hosts on River. I actually go to events. If you give a shit and actually talk to your customers, you can go very far.
The best founders I know — no matter their company’s scale — thrive on doing customer support directly. There’s literally no better way to understand the pulse of your customer base, what features to build next, or where systems are breaking down. It’s always upside.

18 months ago I accidentally started @ALLIN_meetups. A signup form to get fans of The All-In Podcast together in Miami together for episode 100 went viral, and local hosts stepped up to make it happen in 24 cities. 🤯 When Episode 125 came around people said they wanted to host again and we ended up with 50 cities! 🤯🤯 But I'll be honest. I almost said no because it was so. much. work. Ana and I were trying to automate what we could between Airtable, Zapier, and Luma, but it just wasn't sustainable. But when Jason Calacanis suggested we build a SaaS and invested $100k as part of his @LAUNCH Accelerator, I knew I'd be on the ride of a lifetime. Now with 7,000 members, we're producing worldwide meetups for Episode 150 on October 21st in 70 cities. But this time, we're skipping tons of manual work and powering the meetups on my new startup, @getriver_io. River is an in-person community events management platform turning creator audiences into connect communities. Here's how it works: → We spin up events in 50+ cities around the world → Creators like The All-In Podcast tweet it out & mention it on their pod → Fans step up to host an event in their city → We vet them to make sure they'll be great → Once approved, hosts get added to the event → All they have to do is pick the venue, time, capacity, and price Then the magic happens: like-minded people get together in real life. @colinpmasters said it was like having inside jokes with strangers! I've always loved throwing parties, cooking Thanksgiving, and bringing people together. Never thought I'd be able to build a business out of it. So thankful to: 🌎 All the hosts who stepped up to make it happen in their city ❤️ @anariverasch for being my ride or die to get this off the ground. 🙏 @Ryan_G_Lambert + @bkobos for being my incredible co-founders 💻 @andrew_pynch for writing our first lines of code for FREE 🤓 Eduardo for bringing the very best practices in T3 🙌🏽 @Jason & @JacqKD for supporting founders better than anyone 🤗 My entire team at @olivineagency for supporting me every step of the way I'll post a link to the All-In Meetups events in the comments so you can see River in action (or come hang out with us if you're an All-In fan!).

I'm drinking coffee, listening to a pod, when a support chat pops up from someone (IN ALL CAPS??), but I hop on. She’s 78. River won’t let her register—it keeps asking for a profile photo, which she already uploaded. She assumes it’s her fault because she’s “not great with apps.” I ask if she wants to hop on a video call. She's cute as a button. First thing I help her do? Turn off caps lock 😂 Turns out she uploaded a cover photo, not a profile one. We fix it. She’s in. I log a UX bug. That part of the app needs work. She’s been listening to @theallinpod since day one. I tell her I'm Rae, the one they've mentioned a couple times about organizing the meetups and that @Jason invested $100k for me to build @getriver_io. She grins and says, in her sweet southern accent: "Well, you tell @Jason I said hi!" Hope I’m still going to underground podcast events and using early stage apps when I’m 78. 🫶

#1 flaw of community builders is being too nice to everyone. Gotta protect the flock from a few bad actors so everyone else has a great experience. Hard to do, but if you don't, no one will complain. They'll just stop showing up.

3:01 - 5:31: @chamath & @Jason explain the critical need and opportunity for offline events: "there is so much room to build real communities, and I think people are just so tired and bored with everything online. Offline experiences will be a huge value add in people's lives. "There is definitely a bridge needed from online-to-offline and All-In meetups that Rae's been hosting [on River] is a great example."

Proud to say I've been on the sober train since 2015 (almost 10 years!!!). I'm reminded because last night I was out with friends and a restaurant I wouldn't have expected had a great mocktail/zero-proof list. Back in 2015 I wasn't an "alcoholic", but it wasn't helping with my stress, health, or sleep. I started with no alcohol at work events and expanded from there. It was really hard socially at first. The only mocktails were shirley temples and everyone made a huge deal out of it. But now it's super common and not a thing at all. Love the progress society has made here. Happened slowly at first, and then all at once!

My startup, River, is inadvertently solving for loneliness by bringing like-minded people together IRL (especially among males, which seems to be the hardest group to crack). @profgalloway's newsletter just wrote about the loneliness epidemic and the impact it has on mortality. @getriver_io is making it effortless to orchestrate meetups at massive scale for audiences who have common interests (like @theallinpod, @bryan_johnson). Attendees say it's cathartic to finally "meet their people" and that they "didn't realize there were so many people who like the same things as me in my city". Anybody able to introduce me to Scott? We have a lot to talk about.
