ok so you hate NFTs. cool, let's talk about it. i'm not gonna convince you, but at least i can offer the perspective of an artist who has been involved in the space since 2017 before any of you heard about it.

A few have asked about our stance on NFTs: NFTs are a scam. If you think they are legitimately useful for anything other than the exploitation of creators, financial scams, and the destruction of the planet the we ask that please reevaluate your life choices. Peace ✌️

1.85 ETH (~$5.7k) in royalties in 1 week. this was generated by 36 people. It would take 1.4 million plays to generate this on spotify. not counting the primary sale of 10 ETH (~$31k) which is the equivalent of 7.75 million plays 136 people generated more than 9.1mil people.

a lot of people seem to miss that the entire point of NFTs is to make content FREE while making ownership scarce. nobody is forcing you to pay for an NFT, you can still enjoy it FOR FREE alongside everybody else. you like my music? you can have it for free.

claiming all NFTs are a scam is about as tone deaf and uninformed as it gets. it's pure ignorance. it's like saying all cheese is bad, or that all music sucks. yeah, some are bad, but like anything, there are tasteful and smart and interesting ways to do anything.

scarce ownership empowers artists to make WAY more income without stupid ad based models. it eliminates the exploitative models of Spotify, Apple, Amazon, etc.. unit based/per play economics in an infinitely copiable medium makes no sense whatsover.
when a work is priced by creating infinite digital copies, it’s no surprise that it’s priced incredibly low. It’s an old physical world concept that was embraced by web2. web3 flips this concept and provides a new model. infinite free access for all but scarce ownership.

This isn't just about $GME or $AMC, it's about a level playing field. It's a divide in between an older generation that had actual upside and a disenfranchised generation born into multiple financial crises held up by a corrupt system. I graduated into the 08 crisis, thanks!

i've personally taken a more fine art collector first kind of approach than mass marketing my NFTs. it's more of my speed and i can focus on a smaller subset of people. I have 3.5 million unique listeners per month on spotify, yet I made more income from 5 collectors.

can they challenge the music industry? lol the bar is so incredibly low that literally anything can outperform the music industry. I made more in one single NFT than my entire career. we’re witnessing is the old guard losing control and the true value of music emerging.

auction is sitting at 13.37 ETH (~26k USD) i’ve said it before but fans that want artists to be poor aren’t fans. over 100k followers and making under 10k a year is unacceptable. this community is eager to support real art. welcome @jmw327
probably gonna try out nfts, dont understand them or why they are controversial, but cant keep making less than 10k a year and so if there is a chance want to be able to afford healthcare and stuff, sorry if it offends you and please do whatever makes you feel comfortable

hearing more stories of fanbase backlash against nfts. dunno how else to say this, but they aren’t fans. true fans don’t tell you how to make art, they don’t try to keep you from succeeding, they don’t hold you back. it makes me so appreciative of my own real audience.

Recorded music made 21 billion last year. Artists got 20%. The music industry is patting itself on the back but I think it's rather pathetic. The average person consumes 26 hrs of music a week. 21bil / 7bil = $3 per year Honestly, does that seem fair to you?

i don't mean this to be alarmist, but is the entertainment industry ok? i've had this sense for the past few months that we're experiencing a massive shift, yet it's hard to put a pin in exactly what it is. this is purely anecdotal, but many artist friends are going part-time, managers seem lost and unsure of what to do to break an artist. I have no clue how I'd start in todays environment. a lot of labels/venues closing their doors. tiktok was almost a last gasp of air that is now being silenced. labels are only signing singles that are already trending, never investing in a long term career. the mighty pitchfork is being sold off for parts. and this is just music, i hear about a lot of stuff falling apart in film, budgets being 1/10th of what they used to be, an overabundance of content/etc.. I think it's easy to look at fear of AI, but I don't think that's it. is this all just a high interest rate environment? I started my career in 2007, i've never known anything else. thoughts? theories?

Given the recent disclosures from @pmarca about debanking and the stories now coming to light, I figured it might be time to share my own story.
Can confirm this is true. It was one of the most unethical and un-American things that happened in the Biden administration, and my guess is we'll find Elizabeth Warren's fingerprints all over it (Biden himself was probably unaware). We're still collecting documents via FOIA requests, so hopefully the full story emerges of who was involved and whether they broke any laws. Warren and Gensler tried to unlawfully kill our entire industry, and it was a major factor in the Dems losing the election. The Democratic party should realize Warren is a liability and further distance themselves if they want to have any hope of rebuilding.

if you're wondering why songs are getting shorter it's because streaming services pay the same rate for anything 45 seconds or longer. there's zero incentive to make long songs. my 1 min interludes earn the same as bohemian rhapsody. play count is a terrible metric of value
