My guess is now the world of med schools will divide between places with large enough endowments that can afford doing this and everywhere else
It’s not entirely clear to me that this is…good? For one, the results from NYU (the first do the free med school thing) show that the match rates into residency don’t actually change which specialties people go into (e.g. people did not pick primary care or rural areas)
Second, doctors are still one of the highest earning groups in the country and over their lifetime, their earnings will far outpace other professions. It probably makes more sense to figure out ways to smooth the income of doctors so they don’t go from totally broke residents to making vast swaths.
And a more core question, is a donation to create a free med school (extremely high earning profession) a better utilitarian investment for society than something like discharging loans for people that become teachers (extremely high utility but low earning potential)
Finally, it’s not super clear to me why making med school free makes more sense vs. using dollars to expand the number of residency slots which is the real choke point
Beginning in the fall of 2024, Johns Hopkins University will provide tuition-free Medical School for most medical students and expand aid for future nurses and public health pioneers. Learn more:
