NIH scientists found that retinal organoids, lab-grown models of the human retina, often don't get enough oxygen during early development. To solve this problem, they created a simple 3D-printed stirred bioreactor that keeps oxygen levels in a healthy range. The result: larger, healthier retinal organoids with improved survival and more consistent growth. This low-cost, easy-to-use tool could help researchers create better models to study blinding diseases and test potential treatments. Read more: bit.ly/44Gdesk

As we prepare to celebrate America's 250th birthday, National Autism Coordinator Diana Diaz-Harrison and I have an important message for the autism community: stay vigilant around water. Many autistic individuals are naturally drawn to water, and drowning remains a leading cause of death following wandering incidents. Families should be able to celebrate, make memories, and enjoy the holiday safely. By planning ahead and staying alert, we can prevent tragedies and protect our loved ones.

NIH research helped advance a potential new treatment for methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), a rare metabolic disorder. The FDA has cleared the Investigational New Drug (IND) for MMA-101, a gene therapy candidate, for clinical development. Unlike current treatment options that focus on symptom management or organ transplantation, MMA-101 may address the underlying cause of the disease if successful in human trials. The IND clearance allows a first-in-human Phase I/II clinical trial to move forward at the NIH Clinical Center. Learn more: bit.ly/4y1oopo

Thank you, @POTUS, for signing this landmark Executive Order to scale regenerative agriculture and advance the Make America Healthy Again agenda. On Thursday, @SecRollins and I joined President Trump alongside America's leading regenerative farmers because healthier food starts with healthier soil. This Executive Order expands support for regenerative agriculture, invests in research to better understand cumulative chemical exposures, and empowers America's farmers to grow a healthier, more abundant, and more affordable food supply. We can't Make America Healthy Again without America's farmers.

NIH-funded researchers developed an AI-driven system that helps improve bacteria-fighting peptides. In laboratory tests and studies in mice, some AI-optimized peptides were more effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria than the original versions. This approach could help speed the development of new antibiotics to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. Learn more about the study in the latest edition of NIH Research Matters: bit.ly/4ak9ro7
