This week, ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly active users — up from 500M at the end of March and 4× since last year. Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI.

Last month we announced that everyone now has access to Advanced Voice Mode, with usage limits expanded from minutes per day to hours for free users and near unlimited for Plus. We also announced that Standard Voice Mode would be retired after a 30-day sunset. We’ve heard feedback that Standard Voice is special to many, and we want to get this transition right. Standard Voice will stay available while we address some of your feedback in Advanced Voice. Stay tuned, more improvements to Advanced Voice Mode are coming soon!

We’ve updated GPT-5’s default personality based on your feedback. With Custom Instructions, you can further personalize ChatGPT, including choosing preset personalities like Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. We’re also working on new ways to tailor ChatGPT to your preferences.
We’re making GPT-5 warmer and friendlier based on feedback that it felt too formal before. Changes are subtle, but ChatGPT should feel more approachable now. You'll notice small, genuine touches like “Good question” or “Great start,” not flattery. Internal tests show no rise in sycophancy compared to the previous GPT-5 personality. Changes may take up to a day to roll out, more updates soon.

Most users won’t care about adjusting ChatGPT’s thinking time. For power users who do, we’ve got more toggles and knobs for you!
We’ve heard your feedback that GPT-5 Thinking can sometimes take longer than you’d like.  Now Plus, Pro, and Business users can set the pace to match the moment. Select GPT-5 with Thinking in ChatGPT on web to toggle thinking time in the message composer. - Plus, Pro, Business have Standard (new default, balancing speed and intelligence) & Extended (previous default for Plus) - Pro also has Light (snappiest) & Heavy (deeper) Your thinking time selection will remain in place for future chats on web until you change it.

We're not always going to get everything on try #1 but I am very proud of how quickly the team can iterate. Keep the feedback coming!
Updates to ChatGPT: You can now choose between “Auto”, “Fast”, and “Thinking” for GPT-5. Most users will want Auto, but the additional control will be useful for some people. Rate limits are now 3,000 messages/week with GPT-5 Thinking, and then extra capacity on GPT-5 Thinking mini after that limit. Context limit for GPT-5 Thinking is 196k tokens. We may have to update rate limits over time depending on usage. 4o is back in the model picker for all paid users by default. If we ever do deprecate it, we will give plenty of notice. Paid users also now have a “Show additional models” toggle in ChatGPT web settings which will add models like o3, 4.1, and GPT-5 Thinking mini. 4.5 is only available to Pro users—it costs a lot of GPUs. We are working on an update to GPT-5’s personality which should feel warmer than the current personality but not as annoying (to most users) as GPT-4o. However, one learning for us from the past few days is we really just need to get to a world with more per-user customization of model personality.

Happy OpenAI DevDay! Today we’re introducing a new generation of apps you can talk to – built right into ChatGPT – and the tools for developers to build them. Whether it’s creating a playlist with @Spotify, finding your next home with @Zillow, or taking a course with @Coursera, these apps meet you in the conversation and adapt to your context. It’s the start of a new ecosystem that brings more utility to users and new opportunities for developers.

Thanks for all the feedback! Please see below for a list of quick updates. We'll keep iterating.
GPT-5 rollout updates: *We are going to double GPT-5 rate limits for ChatGPT Plus users as we finish rollout. *We will let Plus users choose to continue to use 4o. We will watch usage as we think about how long to offer legacy models for. *GPT-5 will seem smarter starting today. Yesterday, the autoswitcher broke and was out of commission for a chunk of the day, and the result was GPT-5 seemed way dumber. Also, we are making some interventions to how the decision boundary works that should help you get the right model more often. *We will make it more transparent about which model is answering a given query. *We will change the UI to make it easier to manually trigger thinking. *Rolling out to everyone is taking a bit longer. It’s a massive change at big scale. For example, our API traffic has about doubled over the past 24 hours… We will continue to work to get things stable and will keep listening to feedback. As we mentioned, we expected some bumpiness as we roll out so many things at once. But it was a little more bumpy than we hoped for!

one of my favorite things about openai
One of the most fun parts of OpenAI is watching people here level up so fast and do such excellent work. We are operating at a high level across many different disciplines and many of the people doing it have never done it before, and joined us at the beginning of their career. If you believe in people and give them a lot of responsibility and support (and pick the right people to bet on) you will be surprised on the upside more often than you think. I would love to see more companies operate this way and think we would all benefit. (This was also one of the most fun parts of startup investing.)

As we previously mentioned, when conversations touch on sensitive and emotional topics the system may switch mid-chat to a reasoning model or GPT-5 designed to handle these contexts with extra care. One of my favorite things about building Canvas: we used novel synthetic data generation techniques, such as distilling outputs from OpenAI’s o1-preview, to fine-tune the GPT-4o to open canvas, make targeted edits, and leave high-quality comments inline. This approach allowed us to rapidly improve the model and enable new user interactions, all without relying on human-generated data. Best of all, developers can do it too using the new distillation product we announced at DevDay on Tuesday: openai.com/index/api-model-d…

We've received incredible feedback since launching our new browser, ChatGPT Atlas, yesterday. We're really focused on building the best product for all of you, and since launch, the team has been heads down making it better. Here is (a part of ) the roadmap. Working hard to deliver on it!
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5: We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings. We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence. We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally, as our last non-chain-of-thought model. After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks. In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model. The free tier of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting (!!), subject to abuse thresholds. Plus subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, and Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at an even higher level of intelligence. These models will incorporate voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more.

ty for all the feedback so far! few notes: 1. yes we went out to 100% of plus users yesterday. this is my preferred way of shipping, even if there’s some risk demand is overwhelming 2. doing what we can about rate limits! for now we reset them because there’s so much enthusiasm and some users hit their limit quickly. happy experimentation this weekend! 3. we’re going to test dynamically switching to o1-preview and o1-mini so you won’t even have to think about it (dynamic switching wont count against your limit of course). this may take some time to get right but, over time, I expect this to be the way most chatgpt users interact with the o1 series

ChatGPT is the most consequential consumer product of our time. 10% of the world uses it weekly. It generates billions in revenue (less than three years after launch). It's the fastest-growing product in history (by far). In his first in-depth interview, Head of ChatGPT @nickaturley shares: - How ChatGPT's success was an accident—it began as a hackathon project they planned to shut down after the holidays - How they picked the $20/month price point—by running a Van Westendorp willingness-to-pay survey with a Google Form (a pricing strategy everyone has since copied) - What created ChatGPT's rare "smiling" retention curve - Why ChatGPT was originally called "ChatWithGPT3.5" - "Is it maximally accelerated?" - the philosophy driving OpenAI's relentless pace - Nick's vision for ChatGPT evolving beyond just a chat interface - The impact ChatGPT will have on SEO and product growth - How TikTok comments became a primary user research channel early on - Much more Listen now 👇 • YouTube: piped.video/ixY2PvQJ0To • Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/0ki… • Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for supporting the podcast: 🏆 @orkesio—The enterprise platform for reliable applications and agentic workflows: orkes.io/ 🏆 @TrustVanta—Automate compliance. Happy Day 1 of Shipmas! ChatGPT just got even smarter. Plus users can now use the full version of o1 (drop the -preview) which includes support for image input. We're serious about power users. Our $200/mo plan isn't just unlimited everything. It also has o1 pro mode which is the very smartest version of o1 that we have to offer. I don't expect this plan to be for most people but if you're doing serious work in math, science, code you might find it valuable! See you tmr for day 2!
OpenAI o1 is now out of preview in ChatGPT. What’s changed since the preview? A faster, more powerful reasoning model that’s better at coding, math & writing. o1 now also supports image uploads, allowing it to apply reasoning to visuals for more detailed & useful responses.

Working with @ypatil125 was a career highlight, and I know @rhythmrg & nitter.app/lindensli are equally cracked. I'm confident they're approaching the enterprise in the right way — by going after the hardest real-world problems and hill-climbing to specific intelligence, not chasing generic benchmarks. I’m honestly jealous of the companies who get to work with them first.
Generalists are useful, but it’s not enough to be smart. Advances come from specialists, whether human or machine. To have an edge, agents need specific expertise, within specific companies, built on models trained on specific data. We call this Specific Intelligence. It's what we're building at Applied Compute. We unlock the latent knowledge inside a company, use it to train custom models, and deploy an in-house agent workforce that reports to your team. We work with sophisticated companies that have already captured early gains from general models, like @cognition, @DoorDash, and @mercor_ai. They’re pulling even further ahead with proprietary in-house agents that don’t need to wait for the next public model release. Together, we are building and validating models and agents in days instead of months, achieving state-of-the-art performance on customer evals. Our team has high density and low latency. Our founders all worked on different parts of this problem while they were researchers at OpenAI — @ypatil125 as a key member on the agentic software engineer effort (Codex), @rhythmrg as a core contributor to the first RL-trained reasoning model (o1), and @lindensli as a core contributor on ML systems and infrastructure for RL training. Two-thirds of the team are former founders, and everyone brings a deep technical background, from top AI researchers to Math Olympiad winners. We are backed by $80M in funding from Benchmark, Sequoia, Lux, Elad Gil, Victor Lazarte, Omri Casspi, and others. With their support, we are growing the team, scaling deployments, and bringing to market the first generation of agent workforces built on specific models. In short: 1. We are building Specific Intelligence for specific work at specific companies. 2. That will power in-house agent workforces to support their human bosses. 3. That in turn will unlock AI’s full potential through humanity’s greatest engine of progress: thriving corporations in a free market.

Even the best human assistants are only so helpful on day one. I think we’ll look back on memory as a foundational building block of general‑purpose intelligence. Plenty more to build. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
Starting today, memory in ChatGPT can now reference all of your past chats to provide more personalized responses, drawing on your preferences and interests to make it even more helpful for writing, getting advice, learning, and beyond.

You should be able to use ChatGPT as you see fit, so long as you comply with the law and don’t harm yourself or others. Excited to roll back many unnecessary warnings in the UI. Thank you @joannejang & @Laurentia___ and more to come (send us feedback!)

mind boggling research. cant wait to bring this to the world!
Excited to share what @billpeeb @_tim_brooks and my team has been working on for the past year! Our text-to-video model Sora can generate videos of complex scenes up to a minute long. We're excited about making this step toward AI that can reason about the world like we do. openai.com/sora

Almost three years after launching ChatGPT, nearly 700M people use it every week. Today we’re introducing GPT-5 — our smartest, fastest, most useful model yet — and making it available to everyone, including free users. It reasons automatically, switches between quick answers & deep thinking, and delivers expert-level help on almost any task. openai.com/index/introducing…

Glad we didn’t wait for polish to launch the original ChatGPT — but we’ve come a long way from chat.openai.com/chat to today’s chatgpt.com. Huge thanks to @iansilber for design leadership, and shoutout to @wjosephflynn + @jessechand for cooking on this one. To everyone who copied our anti-patterns: time to deprecate your model chooser.

Had fun being in Germany to launch a sovereign cloud offering with SAP and Microsoft; important to us to help governments use our frontier models.
