Coaching ≠ Changing - Avg FB Spring '22- 88.8 - Avg FB Spring '23- 92.9 - Avg FB Fall '23 - 94.5 - How did he do it? - He got stronger and older 🤷🤷 - John came in as an elite thrower who was 175 pounds. - He's now 190 and still an elite thrower. 🧵🧵🧵

In July, Garrett arrived on campus with some elbow pain and a throw filled with compensations. Our entire focus for the fall was cleaning up his throw, getting rid of his pain, and getting back to past form. Grunting 86 in pens in August ➡️ flicking an easy 89-91 🧵

Movement profiles and release metrics play a huge role in a pitcher's effectiveness. However, they don't paint the whole picture Deception is a huge piece Most pitcher have something they do really well or different For Trent, deception helps his stuff play way up

When adding a new pitch/pitches to an arsenal, it is vital to monitor the throw and other pitches - When adding a changeup this summer, a huge focus for John was making local changes that did not change him globally - Monitoring his throw and fastball shape was paramount

This may be the wildest take of the year. It’s only January 24th!
MLB ought to disqualify anyone who gets/needs that surgery. It's as deleterious as steroids—an artificial biological alteration to enhance performance. Then pitchers will be forced to pitch efficiently to win ballgames rather than hit peak velo. The game will be better for it.

Clearly Garrett was compensating due to some shoulder impingement issues in the past Keeping his elbow low and leading with it to avoid ER and real layback, he started to develop elbow pain and it kept getting lower and pushier So, we constrained and educated

As far as quantifying deception as a whole goes, we haven’t found a good way to come up with one number. Individual factors are easier to quantify though, like measuring how long the ball is hidden in seconds or frames. It can give answers to why a pitch or arsenal plays up

- Leaning into his natural bias as a supinator, we added a SSW sinker - Using his sinker in early counts vs RHH, Sam limited damage and was able to leverage better counts to create better outcomes - Paired with his sweeper and cutter, he became platoon neutral!

- When working on the CH shape in PD bullpens, we always added blocks of fastballs to monitor release height, IVB, axis, etc. - When FB IVB dropped below 18 in this case, we added more FB volume to reinforce his true patterns - Entire Arsenal/Patterns >>> One pitch shape

- Throwing wise, we attacked a few inefficiencies - Adding a coil around the back hip allowed him to create/maintain tension through the linear move and stay stacked down the slope - ❌Pushy Back Leg ✅ Loaded Rotating into FFS

- It's important to first look at the whole arsenal and decide what (if anything) is needed AND why - Next, using a pitcher's strengths/anatomical biases to create a pitch development plan - Having multiple mound sessions at varying intensities per week expedites this process
