Music is a gift. It is the result of a creative act by a human. All those small and numerous details, chosen by a human. We find that it is more than just a mechanical process of assembling one’s knowledge of harmony, melody and instrumentation. There is something extra, that we have labeled in different ways. Some call it a muse, some say the human spirit. When we look at nature, we see remarkable creativity. A sunset, intricate fractal patterns, a mountain vista. It reminds me of an ancient idea: that there is perhaps a Spirit, beyond time and space, that created this and for some reason, gifted that creative ability to us, pesky humans. The idea being that humans are ā€œimago Deiā€, made in the image of this Creator. Companies and technologies with a desire to fully replace that Creative source with some new breakthrough anti-human technology is Tower of Babel level stuff. In other words: kinda not good. The ideology is one that has permeated the Silicon Valley and VC world for decades, and it is absolutely the wrong use of technology. Yes, AI/LLM/ML technologies will have a great use in many cases: helping diagnose diseases, childhood education, replacing CEOs šŸ˜‚. But replacing the exact thing that makes us Human: creativity, this is wrong, and humans must push against this. Whether you believe in God, or you are an atheist, or perhaps agnostic, I think we can agree that something just ā€˜isn’t right’ with all this. Keep being vocal about your views on this! I’ll do the same. And perhaps we will move the needle in the right direction.

I still think the greatest thrill for a music creator is to do this. Had some great sessions here in the UK this week. Been a while! Some personal music I’ll release to the intertubes soon. I was thinking, would anyone want to submit music you wrote with @musio and we will pay to have it orchestrated and recorded live for you? Free. I wouldn’t want to call it a ā€˜competition’ because music isn’t a competition. But maybe a random selection? Let me think on this. We all need virtual instruments but if I can help advocate for real musicians I will always do this.

Hi friends, a note of thanks: I am so proud of what we and this team built with @musio the last 2 years. Huge risks were taken to try something ambitious. It brings me joy to see what people write and compose with it - especially those who can’t afford expensive virtual instruments. My wife and I used the proceeds from our home sale to get it over the finish line. And I know how fortunate I am to even be in a position to do that. I thought long and hard about this: I would rather build something and have it be a spectacular failure, than not having tried at all. My kids are watching me. However, it seems that @musio is NOT a spectacular failure šŸ˜‚ but rather something that continues to grow, and you all seem to dig it so far. Thank you for your support of my little business and I can’t wait to share our plans for 2024. Happy holidays and Happy new year!

Greetings to all my new followers!šŸ‘‹šŸ» Hi I’m Mike, composer, pianist, and founder of a couple music tech businesses. For 18 years I’ve held the view that music production can and should be made more accessible to more people. Music creation is a lifelong and rewarding passion, whether you are a hobbyist, student or a professional. It takes years to improve, and there is great effort in the creative process, and that is where the joy is found! However, there are efforts today to completely delete the human from the creative process with new AI/ML technologies that I view as wrong, and frankly, evil. I’ll continue to share my views on this subject here. I encourage all music creatives to continue sharing your views on this subject. Thanks for following!

Posted this on LinkedIn so I thought I would post here too: After 17 years of starting and running Cinesamples, Inc. and launching Musio (musio.com) these last 5 years, we’ve built a strong foundation. I’m incredibly proud of our amazing team, who, despite a pandemic and numerous challenges, launched a successful and profitable startup. From here, the goal is to build on this foundation and continue growing towards some exciting plans for the future and our customers. I’ve always loved making music, and it’s been my passion since I was 12. So I’ve decided to dive back into what I truly enjoy—creating music for cool projects. I’ve already begun some exciting work with my friends at Disney parks and other ventures. With that said, I realized that I can’t give my full attention to running the company as CEO while also pursuing my music work. The company deserves someone dedicated to this role, so I’ve decided to step away and am excited to promote our CMO, Chris Hayzel, to CEO. I’ll remain on the board and as an owner, and I’ll still be involved in those capacities. I truly believe this is the best decision for us to continue serving our customers long into the future. If you’ve supported us over the years, thank you, thank you!

That John Williams doc on @DisneyPlus. So well done. Man, I had so many feelings watching this. It was a beautiful biography honoring the composer, but not without a sense of bittersweet nostalgia of times gone by. I pray and hope for a future where culture and art reflect goodness, beauty, human creativity. To me there is nothing more inspiring than humans creating awesome things which reflect these values. Especially in a way that unifies a divided culture. I think music really can do this. No? I believe we will get there. We kinda have to. Please watch it and keep creating cool stuff!

Hi Mikey, good to read your response here. You seem like a good guy, and I believe you have a passion for music like so many others. In your interview you had mentioned that most of the feedback about Suno from music creatives was positive. I hope that the overwhelmingly negative response here will give you a more accurate view of the market. We are at a monumental turning point in history, and you are one of the leaders in all this. I strongly suggest you rethink your business model to benefit the creativity of human music creators and not delete them. I have been doing this a long time, I avail myself to you any time if you would like advice. We will all be watching closely to see what Suno (and others companies in this space) does.
Watching myself on video always makes me cringe, but doubly so when I’ve expressed an idea badly. This quote makes it sound like I'm discouraging people from learning music, enjoying music, or improving their craft — I didn’t mean to and that's my fault, not the interviewer’s ( @harrystebbings is a pro). I've been playing piano since age 4 and bass since 13. I still play literally every day (I have both a piano and a bass in my office), and it brings me immense joy. I encourage everyone I know to find joy in music in their own way. But there are two unfortunate and common cases where people miss out on the joys of making music: (a) people who drop their craft out of frustration before they get good enough to truly enjoy it and (b) people who struggle through, learn an instrument to a high level, and then drop it because they couldn’t keep up with the practice or it became stressful. How many people do you know who stopped playing their instrument when they left high school? This is what I was referring to, not undermining the value of practice — which is valuable whether for instruments, tools like Suno, or (apparently) talking on a podcast. Music is my life, not just my job, and a huge part of Suno is making that joy accessible to more people in more ways.

Thoughts on competing priorities: A few years back I had to make a decision. I had 3 options, but I could only pull off 2. The choices were: • Be present for family • Grow the music/software business • Compose music for cool things I chose to focus on the first 2. Alternative was to be bad at all 3. Composing had to be put on the back burner - temporarily. Have you had competing priorities and had to draw a hard line to stay sane? Was just thinking on this again and I imagine others have had to make similar decisions… Have a nice weekend!
