Covering #Boulder for @axios. Formerly @dailycamera; #CUBoulder grad; Hawaii native surviving in a landlocked state with the help of beer, golf and snuggies.
I was wondering why this article was suddenly getting traffic until I opened it and realized I have now written twice about #Boulder Officer Eric Talley. Once in 2013 when he rescued a bunch of ducklings. And today, when he was killed in the line of duty: bit.ly/3rfzweq
This is Clyde. He was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Thereโs no pain associated, he just has to work a little harder to get where he wants to go. 14/10 would wibble wobble with
I don't know who needs this right now, but @KelseyHammon2 got this shot of Ennis the donkey being reunited with his owner and actually you know what, we all need this right now
So @ElizabethSwaney is my hero. I am going to use this loophole in 2022 to be the first Hawaiian to ski in the Winter Olympics. Yes, I will pizza. Yes, I will do it in jeans. I will probably crash. And I will become an Olympic legend.
Thank you to all of the folks at the @denverpost who stepped in to help us with these. Thank you to the family and friends who shared their loved ones with us. Thank you to all of you who have read their stories.
I'm about to log off for the evening, #Boulder. If you are feeling overwhelmed, I suggest you do the same. Talk to someone if you need to, and get some rest. I promise I will be back first thing tomorrow with any updates
Denny Stong worked at King Soopers and was the youngest of the victims. He loved motorcycles and model airplanes and was preparing for his first Civil War reenactment: bit.ly/399YXIe via @johnwenzel

This tweet was randomly quoted by a non-Colorado journalist with a ton of followers and it is very hilarious reading the replies of an entire segment of the internet that now believes I am a moron
A false report of a shooter at a school is despicable, no matter where it is. But to do it to #Boulder, where 10 people were killed only two years ago and police responded to a possible active shooter just two days ago, is just a special kind of cruel
Got my second dose of Pfizer. No side effects so far, but I'm going to spend the weekend in the couch eating chips anyway. You know, for safety reasons
In light of the #MarshallFire, I'll be working my regular shift tomorrow. I can't imagine what those of you who had to evacuate are going through tonight, and we hope to get some clarity as soon as we can in the morning
Large boulder the size of a small boulder is completely blocking east-bound lane Highway 145 mm78 at Silverpick Rd. Please use caution and watch for emergency vehicles in the area.
One year later, keep their families in your thoughts.

Only in Colorado: A reader sent us this photo of a couple whose wedding on Monday in Rocky Mountain National Park not only got snowed on, it was crashed by a moose
Kevin Mahoney was 61, and got to walk his daughter down the aisle last summer. But he will not get to meet his unborn granddaughter: bit.ly/3tRXHRM via @BySajaHindi (pic via @MahoneyEb)
Rikki Olds was a front-end manager at King Soopers, and her coworkers said her laugh lit up the room. She was supposed to be the maid of honor in her friend's upcoming wedding: bit.ly/3tT5CP5 via @jessicaseaman
Suzanne Fountain was a financial counselor in the health care industry, but she was also known by fans of the local theater who watched her perform. She is survived by a son: bit.ly/3sgkyq7 via @DavidMigoya
Teri Leiker was a longtime King Soopers employee and a huge #CUBuffs fan. She was a staple at the Pearl Street Stampede: bit.ly/3sh83dO via @kylefredrickson (pic via @KnutsonLexi)
I filled my ballot out over the course of a week while I read up on candidatesand issues. I dropped it off through my window in my pajamas on the way to get a burger. I got a text this morning confirming my ballot had been counted. Be more like Colorado
Lynn Murray was a retired photo director who previously lived in New York and worked for big-name magazines like Glamour, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan bit.ly/3vRh7br via @JudithKohler and @ehernandez
Neven Stanisic's family came to the U.S. as refugees from the former Yugoslavia in the late 1990s. He was likely headed home from the King Soopers on Monday after fix-it jobs inside the grocery store when he was killed in the parking lot: bit.ly/3tN1fEV via @johnwenzel
Eric Talley โcashed out of his 401kโ to change careers in 2010, joining the Boulder Police Department while raising and home-schooling seven children with his wife. He was the first officer to respond to the scene Monday: bit.ly/3lGIYGI via @abuvthefold

UPDATE: Centura officials saying #MarshallFire came within feet of the oxygen tanks at Avista Adventist Hosptial in Louisville, but staff were able to fight the flames back with hoses. Amazingly, hospital suffered only smoke damage as a result.
Tralona โLonaโ Bartkowiak owned Umba Love in Boulder with her sister, and the business was home to the 49-year-oldโs passions for music, creative imports, and overall sense of life and happiness bit.ly/3vT3Q27 via @DavidMigoya
On the scanner elsewhere in #Boulder County: "They have a firepit going."
People keep asking me how these fires keep starting. It is because you would not believe how much of this dumb behavior goes on even when every local agency puts out alerts asking you to NOT BE STUPID
Since some folks are asking: Some stories covering the #Boulder shooting, particularly legal proceedings, will contain the suspect's name. On social media, I will refer to him simply as the suspect unless I feel his full name is warranted for a specific reason.
Just over the scanner: "You're not going to be able to stop them all, try your best."
This is a deputy referring to large groups of people walking into the burn area. Again, please STAY AWAY from the #MarshallFire burn area
Just got a note from a reader whose father had four of his six grandchildren on lockdown in four different schools across Colorado this morning. While nobody was physically injured, what happened today cannot be forgotten.
Today, even in these conditions and with multiple fires burning across the state, #Boulder County crews responded to a bon fire, trash burning, a campfire and fireworks. So no, these fires are probably not the work of one arsonist. Yes, there are that many stupid humans out there
On a farm in Longmont, with chickens clucking in the background, Gov. Jared Polis just signed a bill requiring all egg-laying hens in Colorado to be cage-free by 2025.
To say this year in #Boulder County has been awful doesn't even begin to describe the horrors this community has had to endure in 2021. From COVID to Hill riots to a mass shooting to this fire, it felt like just one body blow after another.
Well, it's official: I am logging off for the last time as a member of the Daily Camera. I got to meet some amazing people and tell some amazing stories, and for that I will always be grateful.
I was gonna call the weather service for the forecast, but I just walked outside and it smells like cow butt in #Boulder. So I'm just gonna go ahead and say WEATHER is definitely on the way #cowx
It is officially two weeks after my second shot! I can't wait to resume my social life, which consisted of going to a brewery and sitting by myself in the corner and requesting everyone stay away from me
So... I've got some news. I am leaving the Daily Camera. My last day will be Dec. 31.
There were a lot of factors that went into this decision, and I will probably elaborate down the road. But just know it was not an easy decision.
Are we allowed to forfeit the rest of 2022? Like, we just all agree to get a bunch of pizza, stay inside and do nothing until Jan. 1 and then we just try again?
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the new #Boulder snowplow names as chosen by local K-5 students:

- Snow Gobbler
- Mighty One
- Happy Tracks
- Super Scooper
- Frosting
- Plowzer
- Plower Power
- Darth Blader

So I sent out a few tweets about insensitive questions being asked of victims' families yesterday. To explain why this is such a big deal to me, I want to tell you the story of Christopher Meis
I'm about to step away from the computer for the year. (Had to get one last one of those in). We will have reporters coming in tomorrow to check on fire, snow and power situations, but I myself will be off tomorrow
A Longmont man won a wildlife comedy photo competition for this shot of a prairie dog scaring off a bald eagle in northwest #Boulder County in March. He calls it "Ninja Prairie Dog" bit.ly/3lBpxjx via @KelseyHammon2
One other quick note: We've talked a lot about Officer Talley tonight because we learned his name and know a little about him. But when the families and friends of all those we lost today are ready to talk, I promise we will tell their stories as well.
one of my favorite sounds ever is the sound of a crisp new newspaper being read over breakfast for an hour or soโฆ The popping out of it, the folding, the scribbling on the crosswordโฆ I hope it never goes out of fashion in our digital world. It is too romantic. ๐๏ธโฅ๏ธ
On the scanner, crews are starting to call out structure fires. While it's not good homes are going up, firefighters are at least able to try and respond. Earlier, the #MarshallFire was moving so fast they were telling people not to bother calling in fires, just get people out
If you are looking for a safe way to give to the families of those killed today in #Boulder, the Colorado Healing Fund has been activated: bit.ly/3rcLANE
As a local reporter, I don't begrudge national media being here. The world needs to see what happened here. But don't treat this simply as a stop to get soundbites. When you leave, we will still be here covering this community. And things like this erode trust and leave wounds
Leave it to a national reporter to ask a grieving family if they watched a live stream of the shooting that killed their loved one and how they reacted to it.
Have a soul. Be better.
Good news: #Boulder County wildlife officers were able to locate and catch the one remaining loose bobcat kitten in Louisville today, and it is being reunited with its siblings at @greenwood_co
And please, if you are in the #MarshallFire evacuation zone, LEAVE. If you are in the pre-evac zone, get ready. Hearing scanner calls about people refusing to leave, and one couple who got too drunk to leave without help. That redirects valuable resources
A cow broke out of its pen three times and eventually tried to cross U.S. 36 looking for its calf. #Boulder ranchers were able to corral the cow before any crashes and a reunion with her calf is in the works bit.ly/3ue2pfo
We've partnered with our sister paper @denverpost to have reporters working on stories for each of the 10 victims of yesterday's shooting in #Boulder. If you are a family or a friend and are OK with talking, my DMs are open and I can put you in touch with the right reporter
A lot of you keep asking me about the barn. I'm not going to speculate based on videos. Both the cause and even the exact starting point are under investigation and we'll find out more soon. Saying anything more at this point would be guessing and irresponsible on my part.
I don't like talking about this story. Even now remembering the pain in his mom's voice makes me sick. But I decided to share it because there are people in #Boulder today going through that pain. And we need to remember that.
