Windows updates are not fun, but let's get a few things clear. 1. Windows 11 or 10 does not force reboot when you are in the middle of work. It actually knows when you are working and updates are scheduled outside those hours, also called Active hours. 2. Windows 11 will only force install updates if you've been skipping updates for several weeks. Windows clearly warns several times before rebooting the PC. Again, it does not happen in Active hours. 3. In this case, Wassim's PC could have been updated to apply his organization specific updates (not Windows) or it was the IT team that choose to force install updates at this hour. Wassim is clearly a tech savvy person, based on his posts on X. He is very well equipped to handle such cases. And he could have easily avoided it. Granted, Windows Updates are annoying, but Windows is one of the most open, adaptive, and versatile OS, which also makes it vulnerable. macOS is restricted and less vulnerable. People would be first to blame Microsoft if their PC gets infected, but Microsoft actually does a great job with these monthly security updates.
Wanted to check on a patient, but Windows decided it’s update time. Thanks, @Microsoft for keeping us connected to the traditional ways of doing medicine.

Windows 11 in a year at this pace
Microsoft is integrating "Ask Copilot" into the Taskbar on Windows 11. Microsoft says it hopes Copilot becomes a "natural part of how you use your PC, ready to help, guide and collaborate the moment you need it." Copilot will eventually become your Windows Search experience, but for now, it's opt-in. For now, Microsoft says Ask Copilot on Windows 11 will complement the existing Windows Search. Ask Copilot uses existing Windows APIs to return apps, files, and settings, similar to Windows Search, so it won't really solve the issues we have with Search on Windows 11... But it'll give you access to Copilot on the taskbar.

There is a noticeable difference in the performance between the current Windows 10-era Mail app and the recently introduced web-based Outlook app for Windows 11. The new Outlook app is significantly more resource-intensive than the legacy Mail app. In fact, it can use up to 10 times more resources and may even exceed 500mb or occasionally reach 800mb. Windows 11 Moment 4 update is now available for everyone via the optional update rolling out today. Here's everything you need to know: windowslatest.com/2023/10/27… #Windows11 Previously, Moment 4 was only offered to devices with "Get the latest updates.." toggled enabled, a staged rollout. Starting today, the most significant feature update is available to everyone if you grab KB5031455. Three most significant changes in today's update: 1. Copilot in preview: Bing-powered AI now works for more installations. You can click the Copilot button on the taskbar to open the AI on the right side of the display with other apps PSA: Copilot is not available in some European and Asian regions. 2. Start menu: You can hover over files in the recommended section of the Start menu to see a quick preview view thumbnail. Thumbnails will not be available for all files, but it will work with most common files, such as pictures and texts. 3. Taskbar: You FINALLY ungroup apps on the taskbar and show full labels for their name. This is similar to how ungrouping and labelling work in Windows 10 and older. These changes will be enabled on all devices via the mandatory November 2023 Patch Tuesday update.

Microsoft does not force updates. This is a misconception. It really knows when it should update itself. And if you've unsaved work, it'll never try to delete those and proceed to update. Yes, Windows can sometimes update itself, but only when you are not using the PC and you have been delaying updates for weeks. You don't want a vulnerable PC, do you? People hate Windows, as if it's always bugging out or force-updating. That is not true. Windows is surely not perfect, but it's also not as bad as these engagement farmers want you to believe. Just pause updates for five weeks if you hate it so much. After 5 weeks, pause it for another 5 weeks. As for Wassim, he clearly knows tech, and he posted it for engagement.

Windows does not update if you pause updates. I've been pausing updates for weeks and never forced an upgrade. You can simply kill the Windows Update service or use open-source tools to block it for decades. Or just use Group Policy Editor. But you can't expect Microsoft to expose those controls at the GUI level because a) Windows is used by those who don't even understand what it means to stay exposed to attacks, b) older people also use Windows, and nobody would want them to turn off updates fortheir lifetime unknowingly

Windows 11's native archive feature is getting a new built-in wizard tool that will soon let you change the compression method, level, and other settings when archiving files: windowslatest.com/2024/02/02… #Windows11 Different methods can be used, but what you can choose depends on the format you picked. The options are Store (which doesn’t compress at all), Deflate (a common way that shrinks files), BZip2, Xz, Standard, LZMA1, and LZMA2 (these are just different methods that can make files smaller). You can also change the compression level. This is a number from 0 to 9 that tells Windows how much to try to shrink the files. A higher number means the files will take up less space, but it might take longer to reduce the size.

While it's true that more RAM usage doesn't necessarily equate to bad performance, and that efficient utilization of available resources can lead to faster, more responsive apps, the key here is the word "efficient." We are witnessing an increased RAM usage by the Outlook web-based app, without a noticeable improvement in speed compared to the previous Mail app. In essence, the new Outlook app is more resource-hungry without a corresponding benefit. In this case, the old Mail app opens faster than the new Outlook. It's also considerably smoother and faster when composing emails, browsing emails, etc.
