Surreal scene post game: All the Packers fans, their heads and shoulders dusted with snow, are filing out like zombies. It’s like something from beyond the wall in Game of Thrones.
Kudos to the @Browns for allowing Raheem Mostert to get a COVID test at their facility before he joins his wife for the birth of their second child at a hospital 20 minutes from Browns HQ. Baby expected next week when #49ers are in WVa.
Kyle Shanahan has said multiple times that there are plays in the 28-3 scenario with the Falcons that he’d want back. What about Super Bowl LIV? “I’ve been over it a thousand times ... and there actually isn’t.”
Recap. #49ers are playing without:
Starting QB: Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
Top runner: Raheem Mostert (knee)
Top WR: Deebo Samuel (foot)
Top CB: Richard Sherman (calf)
Top defensive lineman: Nick Bosa (knee)
Best player: George Kittle (knee)
They are winning on road, 24-3
The officials swallowed their whistles Sunday, which is generally a good thing. Missed, however, were a pair of late hits on Brock Purdy, this one — which was helmet to helmet — and another at the end of his second, 21-yard run.
#49ers who started every game in 2019:
* Jimmy Garoppolo
* Laken Tomlinson
* Arik Armstead
* DeForest Buckner
* Fred Warner
Conclusion: Football is kinda rough.
This is the 49ers’ “knockdown hat.” It gets signed whenever a WR delivers a clear pancake block in a game. You’ll notice that one guy’s name is on there a lot …
A nice sportsmanship moment after Jimmy Garoppolo’s ACL tear in KC last year: Patrick Mahomes walked alone from the Chiefs’ locker room to the #49ers’ to offer his support for the fallen QB.
”For him to do something as simple as that, it went a long way,” Garoppolo said.
Deebo Samuel when asked about this blind-side block from C.J. Gardner-Johnson, which was to his injured shoulder:
“You gotta get me when I’m not looking. That’s the only way you’re gonna get me”
Nick Bosa is going to love it when the regular season starts. He went 0-4 vs. Trent Williams in one-on-one pass rush drills just now. Williams swallowed him a couple of times. Which is to say, Williams has looked very, very good.
Rookie Mykel Williams has been a nightmare for tight ends so far. He knocked Davis Allen back so violently that officials thought he had had his hands on Davis' face/facemask (he didn't) and flagged him for a personal foul.
George Kittle on the BoA field: "I thought it was an OK turf. But turf's turf. It is what it is. I'd much rather play on grass. That's why I love Jed York. We have the nicest grass in the NFL."
Good on Kyle Shanahan. He said Charvarius Ward passed the concussion tests on the sideline but he was held out of the game anyway. "I didn't feel totally right about it," he said. "... I didn't think he should go back in."
While all eyes were on George Kittle on this 32-yard catch and run, Jauan Jennings was doing Jauan Jennings things in the background. Jennings continued blocking until they reached the Gatorade station in the back of the sideline …
On #KNBR, Drake Jackson said he was blown away by all the new teammates who texted or FaceTimed immediately after the 49ers drafted him. Group included Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Trey Lance & Emmanuel Moseley.
Recalled Jackson: "I'm fanboying, but I've got to be a professional."
George Kittle on Christian McCaffrey’s Pro Bowl snub: “I hope he stays pissed off. Because he’s been pissed off the last four weeks and all he’s done is dominate.”
This is how bad the 49ers’ injury issues are: They had arranged for an MRI truck to meet them at The Greenbrier where they are spending the week. That truck?
... It broke down.
"I love you guys. See ya." -- Jimmy Garoppolo to the Bay Area media, to the fans on what was -- very, very, very likely -- his final presser as quarterback for the 49ers.
#49ers had five sacks on Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams had 43 yards and a TD when Packers visited Nov. 24, a 37-8 win for SF.
Notable:
* That was Emmanuel Moseley’s last start at RCB before Ahkello Witherspoon regained his role
* Dee Ford didn’t play
* Joe Staley didn’t play
Fred Warner conducted a longer-than-normal pre-practice huddle today. Warner said earlier it was important to strike the right tone in practice today, especially for a defense that’s been underperforming of late …
With locker room closed for COVID, it would have been very easy for the 49ers to hide/shelter Jaquiski Tartt after the game. They didn’t and Tartt was clearly determined to explain what happened on the play. Big props to player and team.
That was Raheem Mostert's second fumble recovery of the season. To recap:
* Led team in rushing
* Led team in touchdowns
* Led NFL RBs in rushing average
* Led team in special teams tackles
* Led team in special teams fumble recoveries
Per Justin Fields' agent, the plan right now is for Fields to throw again when Ohio State holds pro day No. 2 on April 14. Kyle Shanahan has signaled that the 49ers will be on hand.
Underrated player of the day for the #49ers: FB Kyle Juszczyk. He had no carries and one catch but delivered a key block on nearly every one of the team's prominent plays against the Bears.
I hope you’ll forgive me for this extended Tweet. I went to breakfast this morning at a very busy spot in Denver. Hostess says there’s a 20-minute wait, but if there’s a spot at the bar, go for it. ...
John Lynch just gave Kyle Shanahan a massive bear hug after that Gould game winner, then did the same to Jimmy Garoppolo. An appropriate post-game scene.
Deebo Samuel did some full-field sprints — ball tucked under his arm — as practice got underway. We’re not allowed to film rehab work, but George Kittle clearly likes his teammate’s progress …
Kyle Shanahan is 20 minutes late for his press conference. He might be finalizing the Trey Hendrickson + Quinnen Williams + Maxx Crosby trade everyone's been waiting on.
Kyle Shanahan allowed me to observe halftime (very rare access) of the 49ers’ game against the Bucs on Sunday. I’ll write about it at a later date, but as a teaser I’ll say that it was fascinating and revealing. First guy in: Fred Warner. Last guy out: Brock Purdy.
Kyle Shanahan -- to put it lightly -- was amused by the reporting that immediately connected the 49ers with Mac Jones when they made last month's trade.
"We weren't going to look to correct that," Shanahan said of the Jones-to-SF reports. "At all."
Some will ask whether Emmanuel Sanders was worth a half-season rental after the #49ers gave Denver third- and fourth-round picks. SF got a fifth rounder in return and went to the Super Bowl with considerable help from Sanders. IMHO = worth it.
Nick Bosa said he’s not much for trash talk but did so against nemesis Baker Mayfield. An example, per Bosa: “Baker? Baker? You good? Step it up. We want a challenge.” He said Mayfield didn’t respond.
That was about as dignified and honest a final presser as I've seen a 49ers player have. I think it speaks toward the way Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have lifted the organization. Tons of back biting/hurt feelings in the organization before they got here. Much, much better now.
Does Trent Williams want to re-sign with the 49ers? He was asked today by WSH area writers whether being in that team's ring of honor is important to him. Said Williams: "I'm a San Francisco 49er now and my goal is to end up in their ring of fame."
Former #49ers CB Charvarius Ward is signing with the #Colts on a three-year deal worth up to $60 million, sources tell The Insiders. He gets $35M guaranteed including a $20M signing bonus.
Deal negotiated by Kevin Conner and Robert Brown of @UniSportsMgmt.
As someone who's studied both George Kittle (team I cover) and Travis Kelce (Team Barrows, 3rd place '20 fantasy finish), I can tell you this:
One guy plays tight end and the other guy plays slot receiver.
