A small story …A member of the Kyiv hotel staff, Oleksandra, asked me quietly why we were leaving the city. “Will they come”? “Maybe”,I said and wished I hadn’t. “But we’ll be back”. “God bless you all for coming”,she smiled.I had no words. No words at all.
Good Morning from Ukraine. Cold and snow flurries. Day Eleven of this wretched invasion. And a thought occurs. Superpowers don’t behave like this. This is the stuff of mad dictatorships. #Ukraine
We moved out of Kyiv today so we can continue broadcasting at a more secure location in Ukraine .Never easy decisions. So many reasons to stay, one good one to leave . #Kiyv
Good morning from Ukraine. Cold and specks of snow . Dark days now . We will not invade, they have. We will not target civilians, they are. We will stop firing to let people out. They don’t. Day 12 of this hell. #Ukraine
By the way, if it’s safe for the country to head back to the shops, it’s safe to end the remote news conferences and get journalists back in the same room as the ministers they are questioning .
Good morning, Russian bombing of western Ukraine is now rattling windows across the border in Poland…a NATO country. We are now a tiny miscalculation away from a much broader war here . That is the reality of the horror Putin is unleashing on Ukraine for no reason .
Take a bow all those behind this show. On stage, backstage, everyone involved. A quite brilliant spectacle, with a breathtaking backdrop. Occasionally this country just nails it. #PlatinumPartyatthePalace
A brave Russian politician has just stood up to say “We want to be a nation of peace …I cannot stay silent when pseudo-historical nonsense has become an excuse for Russians to kill Ukrainians”.Unfortunately Alexei Navalny is in one of Putin’s prisons. He doesn’t like opponents.
Ukrainian jets roaring low over us in the last few hours … still in the air nine days into this war … that is not something that would have been predicted at the start of this invasion #Ukraine
Dear BBC , these are desperate times . The nation needs a lift and it needs sport . Please replay the 2012 Olympics as it happened for the next 2 weeks in prime time . Idea courtesy @je_sanderson
By the way , journalists calling out Donald Trump for blatantly misleading people is not breaching impartiality as some are arguing , it is being on the side of truth . Important difference. #USAelection2020
We queued with Ukrainian refugees at the Polish border, mainly women, children and the elderly. If a frightened ,uprooted child has to be confronted by people in military uniform they want them to be welcoming, smiling and unarmed . The Polish border guards I saw were all three.
Novak Djokovic may make history today winning the four Grand Slam events in one year …. But he will never ,ever win the US Open AND the Sundridge Park Tennis Club ‘Kent Player of the Year’in the same 12 months. Just won’t happen …@EmmaRaducanu will always have that on him .
For all those abusing journalists for criticising and challenging the government: if you had journalists allowed to expose failings, report the truth and challenge authority in China, rather than being imprisoned, maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place
In the Balkans - where the atrocities horrified people across Europe - the conflict dragged on into months and then years .The world slowly turned away .In Ukraine ,if that happens, Putin wins .Averted eyes=acceptance. The very least we owe Ukraine is our attention. #Ukraine
The story of this meagre £140,000 payment to the widow of the sub-postmaster who walked in front of a bus, taking his own life, just gets worse. The Post Office insisted the money was paid in stages so they could stop payments if she spoke out about the case. I mean ,really?
This breaks my heart. A good man, a rival on the foreign correspondent beat but above all a friend. If good journalism is about empathy, and it often is, George Alagiah had it in spades. He understood injustice and the power of good reporting to highlight it,if not correct it …
It is with deep sadness that the BBC is announcing the death of its much-loved journalist and presenter George Alagiah.
bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2023/g…
ALT Image of George Alagiah on right. Left text "“Across the BBC, we are all incredibly sad to hear the news about George. We are thinking of his family at this time.
“George was one of the best and bravest journalists of his generation who reported fearlessly from across the world as well as presenting the news flawlessly.
“He was more than just an outstanding journalist, audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity. He was loved by all and we will miss him enormously." Tim Davie BBC Director-General"
Zelensky on the barbaric siege of Mariupol: “To do this to a peaceful city, what the occupiers did, is a terror that will be remembered for centuries to come.”
Just think about this . An American President has just stood in the White House and said, effectively , that millions of votes should not be counted. In the country that calls itself the world’s greatest democracy. Just think about it . #USElection2020
A genocide that didn’t happen; nuclear ambitions that Ukraine doesn’t have and a threat to Russia that does not exist. I have yet hear a single justification for the murderous invasion of this country that even remotely bears scrutiny. #ukraine
It’s truly shocking and desperately sad. A great institution many look up to , support and revere, suddenly, and publicly, verging on collapse............I honestly don’t know how Liverpool FC will get out of this mess.
Good morning . Day Ten of Putin’s invasion . It is grim and hideous in many places here but Ukraine still fights, the capital and many other cities still stand , the Russians are struggling and this has a long way to go. #Ukraine
False alarm… this time. We have a basement . Many of the people of this great city do not . What they will be going through in the coming days is unthinkable. All because of the grotesque recklessness of one man . #Kyiv
The vast majority of the terrified people fleeing for their lives here will stay in the safest place closest to the homes they love.A tiny minority will have family in UK they want temporarily to join .If we can’t give them our army, the least we can do is give them a welcome.
Are the Russian military in Mariupol really surprised there is no surrender in exchange for “safe passage” and “humanitarian corridors for civilians”? No one believes a word they say . No one. It is why peace talks founder. Trust . There is none. #Ukraine️
When Switzerland and Finland move against him, Putin must know he’s in trouble. Switzerland planning sanctions , Finland considering supplying weapons to Ukraine. Extraordinary times . #Ukraine
Good morning from Ukraine .Day 13 of the invasion . A tale of two leaders emerges. Zelensky confident, brave and taunting Moscow . Putin , increasingly isolated , paranoid and threatening Kyiv . #Ukraine
You can say one thing with certainty . It was definitely not in Putin’s thinking that almost 3 weeks into his invasion, three NATO country prime ministers would be visiting Kyiv to meet with President Zelensky . Not part of his wretched plan at all.#Ukraine
George Alagiah … always smiling. We were laughing about how we always said we’d stay ‘on the road’ but then sought the comfort of the studio ! This was 2016 two years after his diagnosis . Such a good man …
Putin is bombing this city tonight …but in the last couple of hours his finance and banking system have been hammered by the West.Economic life in Russia is going to be crippled … possibly for years . Now … sleep .
Incensed doesn’t come close ... I haven’t left my house for 10 weeks , other than to walk ... I have done the right thing by government directive .. who is this f.,?!ing tit Cummings ?
Good morning from Ukraine. After a sickening day this invasion enters its third week. War crimes for which it is unlikely anyone who matters will be held accountable are mounting. There are peace talks somewhere. It is bleak. #Ukraine
The country is riddled with anxiety .The government should start daily news conferences to explain strategy and answer questions. Social media is fine BUT millions do not use it ... incl many elderly, precisely the people you need to reach . #coronaUK
What I simply don’t understand about the PO scandal is who in charge of that addled organisation really thought 900 sub pms all had their fingers in the till. Is that really what they thought of their own people ?Is that really what they thought of their own recruitment process
Boris Johnson - a Prime Minister whose downfall was almost entirely self inflicted - blames the “herd instinct” of the Westminster Tories for his political demise.
The war here is basically this.On one side Ukrainians -military and civilians- ready to lay down their lives to defend their free, democratic country. On the other, Russian troops wondering why on earth they are here and,at best, half hearted about what they are being told to do.
Disgusting racial abuse of England players , yobs storming into Wembley and Leicester Sq trashed … why would football want to come home to this anyway?
Have known him for a while - and he’s beyond irritating - but the zeal he’s showing on this, recording interviews by ministers ( boycotting him) on rival stations to pull them up .....is quite something .
'You just told BBC viewers that there had been handful of days when over 100,000 people had been tested. No, there have been a handful of days when you have conducted 100,000 tests.'
@Piersmorgan refutes Pension Secretary @theresecoffey's statement this morning.
Why are Putin supporters on state TV saying Russia must wreak revenge for the sinking of the Moskva …if the Russian military insist it was a fire on board , and it sank in a storm and was nothing to do with Ukrainian missiles? 🤔
Corbyn: As you may have noticed, the MSM can be hostile. I did an interview for Sky and they kept asking me about racism and why people were leaving the party, rather than things I wanted to talk about.
Message received from emergency doc friend “Will the media and others please stop using terms like battling and struggling . It is unfair on sick patients who have no say in the matter. And it’s ok to be scared “ . Just passing on .
The mum of a soldier killed in Afghanistan is too upset to come on my programme but asked me to quote the poem The Dead Soldiers Who Do Not Speak “Whether our deaths are for peace or for nothing we cannot say…we leave you our deaths, give them their meaning”. I will. Too sad .
My on-the-road companion, cameraman and friend for much of the nineties ,Mick Deane, was shot dead in Egypt in 2013.The Mick Deane Bursary was set up in his memory.I am now in Ukraine with one of the first to benefit @DeanMassey25 .The wheels of life.God bless you Mick 🙏 @SkyNews
Sense of foreboding here growing . Curfew imposed here from 5pm tonight to 8am Monday . Anyone on the street will be considered a member of the “enemy’s sabotage and reconnaissance group”. We will continue with our programmes somehow. It is important. #Kyiv
Gareth Southgate’s “we all want to be loved” comment last night shows how the criticism he routinely suffers really hurts . But he willingly absorbs it so the players don’t have to. England is lucky to have such a decent, thoughtful and honest man at the helm.
Lukaku is not happy with the situation at Chelsea but “I won’t give up because I’m a professional”. Well that’s a relief! Was the bit “and I earn 300k a week” lost in translation ? 🤷♂️@ChelseaFC
He died 8 years ago today … shot by a sniper in Egypt…Mick Deane, for years my cameraman , my editor , my eyes, my ears , my mentor, my guide and occasionally my scriptwriter. A great man, missed to this day. God bless him …
I actually can’t remember a crisis in my lifetime where the outcome depends in such large part on seizing the cooperation of the public , and yet where informing and winning the confidence of that public has been so lacking #coronavirusuk
Ukraine claiming a fifth Russian general killed in battle . A fifth . A sign maybe that it is such a shambles unfolding that top officers are having to push forward to sort things out ? Or good Ukrainian intelligence? Either way untenable for Russia to lose many more.
Back after a month to a London spring … May it arrive in Ukraine very soon … a peaceful spring, free of the dark , bleak winter of brutality inflicted upon it .
The graduates of Kharkiv School 134 still decided to take photos in front of their school that was destroyed by Russians. There are 111 schools that are completely destroyed by Russia in Ukraine. This number will grow unless Ukrainian army can stop them.
That the King gives Alan Bates a knighthood before the government gets round to giving him full compensation says everything about the crushingly slow process the postmasters are still facing.
There urgently needs to be more science on the 12 week gap between Pfizer jabs. Doctors and nurses are now being told they are dealing with a more deadly variant and yet they are still being deprived of the maximum protection offered by the Pfizer vaccine. #COVID19
Morning. Day nine… and what new hell is engulfing this country? Russians attacking Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant? A fire but secure for now, we’re told. The madness goes on. #ukraine
Good morning from Ukraine. Day 14 of this wretched invasion. Wondering how many young Russian soldiers -or officers for that matter- are waking up on Ukrainian soil this morning thinking this is a just war ?
It’s really not a bad old country that produces a team of scientists who come up with a breakthrough treatment that will be saving lives from tonight and a young footballer with compassion who can change govt policy to benefit hundreds of thousands of struggling kids.
The Russians are getting a fight on the battlefield Putin will never have imagined … and I can’t remember when the global information war surrounding a conflict has been so one sided. #Ukraine
Good morning from Ukraine. Day 15 of the invasion .New cities targeted by Russia. But don’t forget Mariupol. Brutal siege goes on, thousands trapped, buildings hit every 30 minutes overnight ,says Mayor . Don’t forget Mariupol. #Ukraine
Good morning from Ukraine. Or rather Poland, just crossed the border this morning . No idea when or how this dreadful war ends. Could be a protracted conflict which Putin did not bargain for. Pretty sure I’ll be back. #Ukraine
