i think yale should offer at least one ethnogeology course! there’s so much to talk about there and non-Indigenous students should be required to recognize the importance of geology and Earth in Indigenous cultures

when we cite your 2023 papers in our email, they say we didn't search thoroughly enough. when we cite older papers, they say we are annoying and not invested in their current research. when we don't cite any papers, we didn't even bother! can prospective students win?
I don’t mind when prospective PhD applicants email me wanting to talk about work I did 5 years ago. As long as they don’t mind my enthusiasm about instead following up on their work at the middle school science fair.

often, when i remember that lockheed martin manufactures missiles like these that are meant not to explode but to cut a target into pieces, i wonder if there is any ethical way to be in the space industry--even as a planetary geologist.

As someone who works in a cultural center at my university and takes a lot of joy in welcoming and guiding the incoming Native students, I cannot express how frightened this makes me.

here's your much needed reminder that Native Hawaiians staunchly oppose telescopes on Mauna Kea and by supporting the construction/existence of these telescopes you are contributing to the desecration of sacred land!

the amount of 17 year old "space and defense enthusiasts" liking the missile fanboy tweets in my replies is amusing. do you not have precalculus homework to be doing? college applications to submit?

I wrote about The Last Of Us’s political landscape as a continuation of the post-9/11 security state, and what we can learn from the zombie apocalypse’s revolutionary displays of destituent power.
Lex Schultz (@lexkschultz) writes, "The Last of Us’s television adaptation illustrates how power operates in response to disaster and how alternative forms of resistance can arise out of these circumstances." Read more: broadsatyale.com/the-last-of…

don’t talk to me rn i’m busy emotionally processing this
My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will – but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me.

space agencies give millions upon millions of dollars to these weapon manufacturers for mission spacecraft. there is no way around it. how can those of us in planetary science that call ourselves anti-war morally abide by this?

it's actually insane that i got the LPI/NASA summer internship because i had the due date wrong and ended up having to ask for letters of rec 5 days before and i panic-wrote the entire application during my petrology class

Life sucks. Nothing goes as planned & nothing is reliable. You know what is reliable? Chemical reactions. I can calculate how much of a mineral will dissolve in solution based on the species' activities and the presence of aqueous complexes. Science never lets me down

ethnogeology not being a requirement for geology majors is a direct cause of white scientists’ disrespect for Indigenous land — for example, the construction of telescopes on Mauna Kea. geology was not founded by white scientists—it was founded by Indigenous peoples.

Yale has had record numbers of matriculated Native students in the past few years. I’ve seen firsthand through my work how important a large and thriving cultural community is for these first years. This puts it all at risk.

I came down to visit a friend in Houston and got stuck here because of Beryl. Abbott, your party is the reason the Texas energy grid is a failure and CenterPoint has a monopoly on power in Houston. You are the reason this city has no infrastructure to deal with a <1 Cat storm.
Biden's memory fails again. Not once did he call me during Beryl. He has my number & called me on Memorial Day after tornadoes hit Texas. I've had daily calls with state & local officials during Beryl. I spoke with FEMA Admin while on our trade mission but Biden never called.

i was the NISAY co-president from nov 2021 to nov 2022. after our MMIW vigil, the other co-president and i were harassed by administration via text, call & email and told to give the names of those involved in the red handprints. we refused. they threatened disciplinary action.

Even the Native students that do manage to make it through will have to opt in to our Peer Liaison program and other cultural center programs because we won’t have their information. They’ll have to seek us out themselves.
