I feel incredibly lucky to be working with some of my favorite people in tech and social media every day. It’s easy to get stressed out when you lose sight of ‘why you do what you do’—a simple reminder goes a long way. When times are good, I take a photo in my mind of where I am and how I feel in that specific moment. When times are tough, I return to my happiest memories to remind myself that bad times are temporary. Eventually, most of us find a way out.

Cum Romanus Eris: The idea dates back to 396 AD. You can find this idiom—"when in Rome, do as the Romans do"—in the letters of Pope Clement XIV. "An afternoon nap would not alarm you if you remembered we are in Rome and should do as the Romans do."

4 years ago, I lost my job at WeWork. In that dark moment, I started writing. I published 500 words per day for 90 straight days on LinkedIn. My audience grew from 0-10,000 followers in 3 months. It blew my mind. I didn’t realized LinkedIn could be used as an audience-building tool. In 2019, very few creators published long-form content on LinkedIn. By the time others cracked the cheatcode, the game felt a little less fun. I transitioned from LinkedIn to Twitter, Medium, Substack, etc. I started a family, published a book, and launched a business. If I had to start all over, I’d tell myself this: “There’s only one thing holding you back—and that’s you.” Don’t overcomplicate it. Press publish. Ship it. Move.

If you want to stand out online, you have to be yourself. 10 stories from my life to humble, inspire, and teach: 𝐿𝑜𝓋𝑒 I met my wife in Rome. You never know where love will strike. Be open to every opportunity to meet your person. 𝐿𝑜𝓈𝓈 My best friend passed away when I was 21 years old. It's a constant reminder that life is short. Cherish time with loved ones. 𝐿𝒾𝒻𝑒 My son is 5 months old. He teaches me something new every day. You will always be a beginner at something. Discovering new things makes life worth living. 𝐻𝑒𝒶𝓁𝓉𝒽 In 2018, I suffered from burnout, depression, and anxiety. You only have one mind and one body. Prioritize mental and physical well-being. 𝐹𝒶𝓂𝒾𝓁𝓎 My parents divorced when I was 13. They live 3,000 miles apart on separate coasts. Visiting them is not easy. Don’t let distance stand between you and the ones you love. 𝒪𝒷𝓈𝑒𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃 Ten years ago, I dreamed of being a pro tennis player. I made it as far as the Division 1 level, but the top 0.01% requires sacrifices I wasn’t prepared to make. To be the best, be obsessed. 𝐻𝓊𝓂𝒾𝓁𝒾𝓉𝓎 I've gotten everywhere I want in life through volunteership and apprenticing. Don't be afraid to do something for free. It's the best way to get to where you want to go. 𝐼𝒹𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓉𝓎 I lost my job when I was 28. Before that, I always tied work to my identity. Sometimes work is just work. There are other things that make us who we are. 𝐿𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 I studied business in college. I worked in finance for several years. Now I'm a writer. Everyone starts somewhere. Don't stress over what you study. Learn to learn. Your education is a foundation you build upon. 𝐻𝓊𝓂𝒶𝓃𝒾𝓉𝓎 I recently started writing on Twitter again. It's hard to be yourself online. Many people show a filtered version of themselves. My goal is to be myself and teach you something. The digital world needs more humans. Thank you for reading this far. If you would like to tell a story, share it in the comments below. I look forward to hearing from you ❤️.

For freelancers, retention is a blessing—we can be patient with leads and pay off debts (for me it’s $100k in student loans).
