being a journalist is like being in school and writing a paper on a cool new topic every week and getting to chat with top experts in that field🥰and then you have random fun facts to tell your friends but they don't really care lol

So my mom found this article and was panicking - because it said the Pfizer vaccine “was 74.4% effective in Asian Americans” without any explanation or note. This is /extremely misleading/ and it’s really irresponsible to publish something like this w/o explaining. (1/7)
How the COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer compare head to head If the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech was good enough to get a nod from the FDA, the vaccine from Moderna and the NIH almost certainly is as well. latimes.com/science/story/20…

LA folks - the fastest free walk-up COVID PCR testing locations in LA I’ve found so far are the random blue tents scattered throughout Koreatown. I’ve always gotten results within 2 days! 🥸 Kinda just have to drive around to find them, but they’re out there.

I often think about my mom & her stroke of genius, stocking up her little medical clinic with 2000 (!) masks way back in JANUARY before COVID was even on most Americans’ radars. She had heard about a strange coronavirus in doctors’ WeChat groups & had a bad feeling about it.

They probably didn’t have time to be picky. Just wanted to get clinical trial participants ASAP. But it’s the responsibility of science reporters to /explain/ these kinds of reports! Bc otherwise it can really undermine confidence in the vaccine. (END)

ADDENDUM: I felt like I should be more clear - Those are EXTREMELY small sample sizes, way too small to be meaningful & draw larger conclusions about vaccine efficacies in different races. (In comparison, 33,006 test participants were white)

🚨 Reminder that: - It takes at least 12-14 days for the first shot to start giving you protection. Really it takes a few WEEKS for your body to develop antibodies. - Pfizer is only 52% effective after first dose. Moderna is approx 80%. After second dose both are about 95%.
The Covid vaccine is not a guarantee. My wife & I, vaccinated 17 days ago, both tested positive yesterday and are in quarantine. We think the source was a person we had contact with before the shot took full effect. Caution is in order. We’ll be fine, I should add.

So is anything in this article factually incorrect? No. It simply reported the percentages from the Pfizer study. But is saying the vaccine is only 74.4% effective in Asians correct? No - the real answer is, we don’t really know. And why didn’t Pfizer test more Asians? (6/7)

my school newspaper translated a story they did on alleged union-busting efforts at Pitzer College after staff went public with a union campaign. amazing amazing work❤️

So out of the 880 Asians who got vaccine, only 1 got sick. Out of the 883 Asians who got placebo, 4 got sick. This turns into “74.4% effective in Asian Americans.” Bc going from 4 —> 1 is about a 75% reduction (slight diff due to some calc w other sub groups in testing) (4/7)

I was curious why there was a Chinatown Express in Koreatown. This woman, Eilene (I think that’s how she spelled it, it was loud) said it’s cuz there’s less competition here (because it’s all Korean restaurants) which makes a lot of sense, lol. The food is under $10 for a meal 😮

A personal takeaway: the system we have is so complicated, it took me hours of research/interviews to even begin to understand what I was writing about. I have a phone, a computer, access, time. How do we expect a homeless person & their overworked case managers to navigate it?
