For 20 years the nation has been paying the "temporary" baggage fees first billed as a way to help the airline industry bounce back after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Britney Spears turns 40 this year. Her conservatorship has lasted 13 years. She's spent her late 20s & all her 30s unable to make life decisions. This is an important story. It's also important to ask what happens to conservatorships w/out an international pop star at the core.
One of the most important parts is where she discusses colleagues who were publicly supportive and privately complicit. That is a lot of people in our industry.
I'm old enough to remember when too many news leaders questioned if Black journalists could cover Black Lives Matter & the nation's civil unrest. They claimed we couldn't be objective. Now I ask those leaders, can white journalists effectively cover the Trump insurrection story?
I don't know what Meghan Markle said in her Oprah interview, but what's very clear is how worried the UK is that she's about to air them out. I for one cannot wait to watch this on Sunday.
I think it's time for news organizations to retire the video of George Floyd's death. It shouldn't be treated as agency b-roll or wallpaper. There are other ways to reference him & what happened w/out replaying his final moments. In the last hour I've seen it 3X on 1 channel.
#suffrage100 fun fact: It's NOT the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote. It's the anniversary of white women's right to vote. Black women didn't have theirs secured until AFTER Dr. Dre's birth & when The Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" was No. 2 on the charts
Black women have been one of the most crucial parts of the U.S. electorate for decades. They are one of the smallest parts of the electorate and yet they’re some of the most consistent voters. So why does the media focus so little on them?
1/3 I keep seeing these Qanon redemption stories & I think journalism is failing. This dangerous movement is almost exclusively white, and yet, none of the stories I've watched or read discuss race. Reporters aren't asking ex-Qanoners about it. Race is central to this story.

This reminds me of something. Even when non-white cisgender women are too good at sports, they're penalized. An outside analysis of all of this reads like this is not really about women's sports, but it's about ensuring specific types of women can win. usatoday.com/story/sports/co…
.@Yamiche just told the audience to get friends in the industry that you can cry to so that you don't cry at work and I'm thinking of all the people I've called and who've called me because of frustrations and how glad I am that we have one another.

I see a lot of non-Black people being really weird about Meghan Markle defining her own boundaries and deciding what she's going to share and with whom at what time. Many of you are in news media & it's a reminder why need more Black people at every single level.
It only took an act of insurrection to get social media platforms to begin doing what critics have spent YEARS asking them to do. YouTube says it's removed thousands of video spreading misinformation, including several videos Trump posted to his channel.

How is a seasoned journalist asking a yes or no question about racism? Journalists shouldn't ask if systemic racism is real. Reporting already proves that. There are other questions he could've asked Graham. Also, he failed with the immediate follow up on the answer.
We don't talk enough about how this nation has sanitized and misrepresented MLK and his legacy. We don't talk enough about how the vast majority of Americans disagreed with him and his methods and how so many of those people are ALIVE TODAY.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches were more radical than what is taught today. @iiwrites explains how the media sanitizes the civil rights movement to attack today's activism.

Fun Fact: NBA players aren't boycotting in response to the Jacob Blake shooting. Per AP: A BOYCOTT is an organized refusal to BUY a product/service, or to deal w/ a merchant/s. A STRIKE is refusing to work until certain demands are met. The NBA players are on a wildcat strike.

If you're a cable TV producer, start pulling images from 2020's protests RIGHT NOW. Present what the nation is watching IN CONTEXT. Pull Trump SOTs. Pull cops' responses to protesters. Show the difference in volume, tactic. This is how you gain audiences' trust.
Know matter what happens today, I want Black journalists to take the time to be firm with their newsrooms, request support they need, & be extra safe in the field. Breathe. 2021 has a lot of work for us.
Listen, y'all, let's not act like Will Smith was protecting Jada. Jada can and has always been able to handle herself. She literally rolled her eyes and kept it moving.
I NEVER WANT TO HEAR AGAIN IN MY LIFE THAT WOMEN ARE EMOTIONAL. #Oscars
We had newsroom-wide trauma training today and what I realized is being in journalism is traumatic. It's a profession where you know trauma is built into it. IDK that I'd ever paused to consider this before.
Please stop using Black, Brown, Indigenous, & Jewish friends, family members, coworkers & acquaintances to prove how not racist or anti-Semitic you are. Your relationships with us don't mean that you cannot be racist or anti-Semitic. So ...
2/3 Gender is also central to the story. I'm questioning how press present women in the movement. Many are described simply as moms. What's relevance of that identity? There are millions of moms who didn't get into Qanon & many dads that did. The men not billed as dads.
I'm see a lot of former Trump aides, allies, and friends on cable & broadcast news networks instead of the people who accurately predicated what happened & were dismissed for more than four years. Booking producers and EPs, this isn't the move.

Don't let the NFL's very Black Super Bowl halftime show obscure the fact it's being sued by Black coach Brian Flores who said, "the NFL remains rife with racism." Remember the NFL blackballed Colin Kaepernick & Jay'Z's social justice initiative for the NFL has produced ZILCH.
3/3 Are news orgs wielding gender in a way that encourages audiences to be more sympathetic of Qanon women? Yes, there is a lot of nuance of who & how people are susceptible to a mass delusion like Qanon. Part of the nuance is specifically looking at the roles of race & gender.
Journalism needs to get real and figure out how it will honestly, accurately, and directly cover whiteness. That is THE takeaway from this election, as it was four years ago ... just as I said then. So, I hope we can retired the tropes of rural residents and suburban moms.
I'm worried news orgs haven't done enough to prime our audiences WE LIKELY WILL NOT KNOW WHO WON THE PRESIDENCY ON ELECTION NIGHT. IMO we need to say this in every story we do for the next week. It's very important. There are heavy news consumers who don't realize this.
We're in the season where many will get hyper focused on weight. Remember: 1. There are no clean or dirty foods. Food is nutrient dense or it's not. 2. Detox is fake. As long as you have working kidneys, you're good. 3. Weight is a poor indicator of progress. Use clothing fit.
That new @Normani video "Motivation" is the reason I'm going to be a better human today and every day for the rest of my life, and also why I'm going to learn how to properly handle a basketball. You did that, N.
I've decided on have lobster salad tonight with a piece of cake for dessert and a ginger tea for the Meghan Markle interview. I'll have popcorn ready if needed.

Khloe Kardashian discussing unrealistic beauty standards & the pressure and damage they did to her WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING OR CHALLENGING how she & her family directly contributed, profited on those standards is why we need entertainment journalists, not notes apps & social posts.
As someone from the deepest part of the Deep South, I can say many people have picked up these terms because they are gender neutral. Southerners live all over this nation. Where we go, so does our language.

Should we even be talking/speculating/ reporting on "electability"? I'm really asking for an industry. I'm not sure journalists should. It feels when we do we're shaping the conversation instead of trying to discover it.
I'm wondering if I'm getting old bc distinctly remember when 100s of insurrectionists stormed the Capitol planning to overthrow a free, fair election where Black voters were the deciding factor. It feels like it was only a month ago, but others talk like it happened last century.
Part of the reason she says she decided to teach at an HBCU is because since she began being bussed to school in the 2nd grade, she's spent a lifetime trying to prove she deserves to be in elite white spaces that weren't built for Black people.
Stop saying people they all have "the same 24 hours as [insert wealthy person here]" when they don't all have the same MONEY. The MONEY is what dictates how time is and can be spent.
5,000 Black and Brown journalists took over Las Vegas this week. I was so glad to see all of them after too many years apart. #NABJNAHJ22 I'm so glad we got to fellowship. I needed y'all.
The white man accused of shooting & killing 8 in ATL is 21 years old. Kyle Rittenhouse was 17 when he shot & killed 2 people in Kenosha. We need to talk less about Gen Z's middle parts & more about why+how some them (& millennials) are following in the footsteps of previous gens.
WAIT A MINUTE, the same news organizations who frequently played & replayed the video of George Floyd being choked to death are now blurring out the video of police pushing down a white man in Buffalo who falls and starts bleeding from the head? Are y'all FOR REAL RIGHT NOW?!
To my fellow Black journalists, please practice self care. We're doing a lot and J- school did not prepare us for the invisible labor we're doing right now.
This is a bizarre take. @TaylorLorenz being a "star reporter," "the most influential" is irrelevant. What we know is online harassment can easily lead to real world violence. It's a fact. This isn't about critiques of work. It's about threats. Why do this when you can help?
Taylor Lorenz is a star reporter with the most influential newspaper in the US, arguably the west. Her work regularly appears on its front page.
Her attempt to claim this level of victimhood is revolting: she should try to find out what real persecution of journalists entails.
This is my thought everyday especially since one purposely passed me on the street alone in the early morning hours 4 years ago in favor of the white couple on the other side of the intersection. He pointed to me, waved no, and pointed to the couple. I wonder how he's doing.

In 2022 the journalism industry should address the vast salary discrepancies b/t so-called digital journalists and their broadcast, print counterparts. Each is a digital journalist. We're 1/5 of the way through the 21 century & journos working solely online aren't worth less.
One thing about African elders who saw you once infancy: they will show up decades later and ask, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" And when you say you don't, they will reply, "GO AND ASK YOUR PARENTS WHO I AM" instead of telling you who they are.
The way I better see absolutely every major news organization pouring MONEY AND TIME AND ACCESS into @NABJ@NAHJ@aaja and @ONA in 2021 and beyond because the journalists who were right about this were in these orgs and sounding the alarm for almost five years.
U.S. journalists better cover this story of protesters storming the Capitol like they'd cover a nation in the global South. Bring that same energy and language.
