Today we decided to start paying people who come for a second interview when we are hiring. They are putting in the time, and if they are not hired, they should be compensated for that.
This, by the Spanish cartoonist José María Nieto, is wonderful:
"I don't see any reason to be optimistic. What do you think the new year will bring us?"
"I believe it will bring flowers."
"Really? Why?"
"Because I am planting flowers."
@MrBeastYT We love the #TeamTrees campaign and want to share it with our followers! May we share/quote your YouTube video and write up for our website?
It's time for the world's idealists to work together. Idealists? Yes, all those people who'd agree with these words: “Working with others, in a spirit of generosity and mutual respect, I want to help build a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives.” Is this you?
On Tuesday, November 3rd, we are giving our staff the day off to make sure everyone can vote. Ask your organization to do this too. Worst case, they will say no. Go for it.
Fiver years later, this, by the Spanish cartoonist José María Nieto, is still wonderful:
"I don't see any reason to be optimistic. What do you think the new year will bring us?"
"I believe it will bring flowers."
"Really? Why?"
"Because I am planting flowers."
This, by the Spanish cartoonist José María Nieto, is wonderful, and applies to 2019, or to any year:
"I don't see any reason to be optimistic. What do you think the new year will bring us?"
"I believe it will bring flowers."
"Really? Why?"
"Because I am planting flowers."
Worth repeating: any organization, foundation, or university with a significant endowment that is laying off staff is beneath contempt. Having a "rainy day fund" is great. But if *this* is not a rainy day, what is?
When you start to feel down and hopeless, remember that you are important, and you have a say. Take control of your actions, and don't give up hope. We can all build a better world together 💛
In a healthy society, there should be many ways of being “successful.” A beloved teacher, a competent nurse, a good poet, should be as admired and respected as a rich entrepreneur. Not only rhetorically, but for real.
And just as they were there, so there are millions of young people like them, all over the world, looking for the best way to make a difference. And that gives me hope.
This is your reminder that it's okay to ask for help.
Ask your intern.
Ask your co-worker.
Ask your colleague.
Ask your manager.
No one can do everything. Your future self will thank you.
Something special is happening in this group. 20,000 of are already there, and if freedom, dignity, generosity, and respect are your thing, we are waiting for you: facebook.com/groups/idealist…

If we defined an idealist as someone who agrees with this statement, would you say you are one? “Working with others, in a spirit of generosity and mutual respect, I want to help build a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives.”
"Nonprofit" is such a terrible name for what we all do. The software industry is not called the "non-hardware" industry. It'd be great if we could just say, "I work for an organization" (as opposed to a business) and everyone understood what we mean.
Such a clarifying moment for people, organizations, companies, and entire countries. We get a very clear picture of who is worthy of our admiration, and who is not.
If this goes on for a while, the whole concept of a “week” will start falling apart. What’s the difference between a Tuesday and a Sunday if on both days we are all stuck at home doing basically the same things?
Action means everything. It’s never been enough to just talk about racial injustice—real change can’t happen unless we join the fight. Here’s a list of resources to help you join the movement however you can. Let's get to work, together.

We’re heartbroken by the loss of John Lewis, a civil rights champion and an inspiration. Let’s honor his legacy by making some noise and getting into #goodtrouble ✊🏽After all, “this is the time.”
50 people a day are dying in Bergamo, an Italian town of 120,000. Imagine 3,000 people dying in New York every day. One 9/11 every day. That’s what’s happening there. Please take this seriously. Please.
I know this may sound a bit extreme, but here's a modest proposal for all media editors: how about you don't assign *any* men to write about these women? Let's try that for a few months and see what happens. At the very least, a worthwhile experiment.
Our hearts go out to everyone suffering in Ukraine right now, as well as to the young Russian soldiers who did not choose this. Freedom and dignity for all.
Happy Juneteenth! The Idealist "office" (we are all working from home) is closed today in celebration of Juneteenth, marking the official end of slavery in the U.S. on June 19, 1865. We hope you can celebrate today wherever you are and join us next year and every year after that.
#ChadwickBoseman's words will not be forgotten. His career amplified Black culture, and his wisdom inspired people from all over the world. This quotation is from his 2018 commencement speech at @HowardUniv ❤️
#ProductivityTip 🧠 Start rethinking "to-do" lists and make "got done" lists instead. Start celebrating what you've already accomplished, instead of agonizing over unfinished work you have to do!

We may be hunkering down and staying home, but there's still plenty of ways to do your part without going out. Here are a few suggestions for how you can lend a hand. ideali.st/WNEVbc
Yesterday I saw this somewhere, and it rang true: "We are not working from home. We are at home during a crisis, trying to work." A big difference, of course, and that's without even considering all those who have lost their jobs or whose work doesn't allow them to be at home. /1
"And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it. Somehow we weathered and witnessed a nation that isn't broken but simply unfinished." 🇺🇸

The thing about these Parkland kids is that they were always there. Five minutes before that loser started shooting, they were all there, as smart, authentic, and powerful as we see them now.
It’s time for the world’s idealists to work together. Idealists? Yes, practical dreamers who want to help build a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives. But how? By focusing on one big challenge: closing the gap between intention and action.
