Today we decided to start paying people who come for a second interview when we are hiring. They are putting in the time, and if they are not hired, they should be compensated for that.

This, by the Spanish cartoonist José María Nieto, is wonderful: "I don't see any reason to be optimistic. What do you think the new year will bring us?" "I believe it will bring flowers." "Really? Why?" "Because I am planting flowers."

It's time for the world's idealists to work together. Idealists? Yes, all those people who'd agree with these words: “Working with others, in a spirit of generosity and mutual respect, I want to help build a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives.” Is this you?

Worth repeating: any organization, foundation, or university with a significant endowment that is laying off staff is beneath contempt. Having a "rainy day fund" is great. But if *this* is not a rainy day, what is?

In a healthy society, there should be many ways of being “successful.” A beloved teacher, a competent nurse, a good poet, should be as admired and respected as a rich entrepreneur. Not only rhetorically, but for real.

"Nonprofit" is such a terrible name for what we all do. The software industry is not called the "non-hardware" industry. It'd be great if we could just say, "I work for an organization" (as opposed to a business) and everyone understood what we mean.
