Turns out the russian dude knows a ton already. Do your research before you Ghidra all day.
I took apart the face id module, hopefully this can give us some hints regarding electrical design (length matching etc.)
Also this project is not helping my adhd allegations….💀
OK my $1000 bounty on this is starting to pay off. @icanc4 has been working it at Waterloo and connected w a Russian hacker who has tons of not-published-in-English info.
There's a kill-switch in FaceID modules which we thought was antitampering, but it's actually laser safety!

The dot projector talks over i2c. theres apparently a sus IC in in the dot projector assembly made to kill the dot projector...
If you want an older generation it’s like $5.
These are 40k dot projectors and like a 14MP camera in visible, idk the IR resolution.
I talked to an Apple engineer who said “don’t even try” to reverse engineer but idk, seems like a worthy project for the right hacker

all you need to do is program the killswitch mosfet to be a dead short, then implement some LED (laser?) drivers for the dot projector. talking with the cameras over MIPI should be the easy part...

well, the same chip also stores an OTP that made face id replacements impossible. unless you read out this OTP ahead of time and trick the phone into thinking that its the original face id module, your face id is gone for good.

They did not bother adding communication lines… it’s not over MIPI nor i2c, it’s controlled entirely by an rp2040
I wish they can release the IMX477 (literally the same sensor, on the HQ cam) in this form factor, and sell it for $40 or something….

Kinda concerned if apple is gonna screw me with some "optimization", where each connection between the reconstructed wafer to the motherboard have a different skew that just "cancels out"...
Looking at the decompiled code, this is not a slow sensor at all.
