The Naroditsky family shares the sad news of Daniel’s unexpected passing. Daniel was a talented chess player, educator, and beloved member of the chess community. We ask for privacy as the family grieves.
This morning my father Doug Williams passed away peacefully in his sleep.
My love and life of chess (including the dodgy Dutch!) are thanks to him.
RIP dad ❤
I started the @ReykjavikOpen with an Exchange French and now a boring Exchange Slav.
Hopefully I will get an exciting game soon.
Blair and friends are streaming all my games over at twitch.tv/gingergm so make sure you tune in! 🥳
I hope the intensity and beauty of this #chess World Championship will remind people that classical chess is quite often far more watchable and exciting than blitz or rapid chess. A chess boom combined with a lack of classical events does not make sense.
What's depressing about Norway...
Everyone's so healthy 😅.
My exercise today was walking up and down these steps 🥵.
I was over taken on multiple occasions by various people...
First, an 80+ year old running man and then a woman carrying her baby...
I suppose the lawsuit was to be expected; any extra drama increases the chance of a Netflix series!
Naming @DanielRensch seems harsh especially after Danny put his neck on the line to defend Hans after he was initally caught cheating on @chesscom.
(2) It has made me angry, and I tend to play much more 'fun' chess when pissed off.
Take this 3-minute piece of mayhem on @chesscom (all sound of course 😇).
My immortal Kings Gambit punt!?
I'm contractually obligated to tweet the @chess24com graphic every day. They didn't bother sending me graphics. Here are some cats instead - piped.video/i-AXImNxCAE
Also, I'm commentating on the Meltwater Final with Peter Leko today at 5pm CET.
#ChessChamps@ChampChessTour
Playing Blitz against Luke McShane, 24 years ago! Taken from the 1996 British Chess Championship in Nottingham; where Luke, Simon Bibby and I shared an apartment. #InternationalChessDay
The most Freudian shit you'll ever get to see: in the penultimate round of the U.S. championship, while their game was still in progress, Sam Sevian picked up Hans Niemann's king, broke it, and then he seemed utterly confused about his regicidal act. bit.ly/3ERzx2J
Chessable are taking things to the next level and I'm thrilled to be part of the team 👏 This will mean more streaming, Chessable videos & GingerGM expansion.
I also have an exciting project that myself and a small team have been developing for over a year going live soon! 🎉
(1/2) Blair and I visited Mike Basman in the hospital on Saturday. He was clearly very ill but still shined with that special charisma his soul possessed.
He mentioned that he wanted the following things to be remembered:
Another gem from @AlexBelsley forthcoming @chessable course 'Best Chess Moves of All Time'. It is Black to play and win.
As the author notes, "arguable the greatest interference tactic of all time."
A massive thank you to everyone who has helped support my work. I finally raised enough funds to buy myself a new computer and studio set up. Aiming for some big things in 2018, hopefully all in glorious 1080p. 😍
Exciting news!! After many attempts I have secured a sponsorship deal with @DuvelUK!
A lifetimes supply of their fantastic beer; all I have to do is ensure that I drink one of their beers every time I play a game.
The Queen's Gambit on @netflix was pretty bloody awesome. A pill popping, red headed, booze swigging Grandmaster who triumphs in the end. 🥳🎉 @anyataylorjoy was sublime in the lead role. Go and check it out.
Got to feel for Ding.
The pressure of playing chess over the board at any level is hard to handle.
I can only imagine what competing in a World Championship feels like. 😱
Intense for sure!
Ding Liren: "Actually I didn't prepare anything yesterday because I'm struggling with my feelings, my emotions, and the line you mentioned — I completely forgot it during the game"
#NepoDing
We are saddened to let Charlie's friends know that he peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge at home this morning after a very short illness.
Charlie had a long, wonderful life. He will be very much missed by many 🧡
I can't believe it.
We were just having a great day: playing chess, drinking, eating chilli, and being silly.
Just over a week ago 😭😭.
RIP my great friend, Gavin Wall ❤️
(2/2) To spread the love of chess, something he tirelessly dedicated his life to.
To look at things differently, that's what Mike did and what Mike wanted future generations to do. RIP
Roger Moore trending... Some 30 years ago I snuck into his tent during filming of Bullseye.
On spotting my head appearing from the canopy, he called me over for this photo.
"You're a brave kid, getting passed all that security."
Cheers Bond, James Bond. #truegent#RogerMoore
Was just checking into my hotel for @ReykjavikOpen at 1:30am, and had the following exchange with the receptionist.
"Ah, Simon Williams. I beat you online the other day. One minute, Nigel Short is challenging me. Actually he can f### off for now. Let me check you into a room". 🤣
Several Grandmasters laughed at me for this weird little 3.h4!? move 10+ years ago; now everyone is at it! 😂
Great to see another unique idea brought to life by Carsten 👏
It is ridiculous that so many are thinking that I really beat Vishy sir in a chess game, that is almost like me waking up and winning a 100mt race with Usain Bolt. 😬
Online cheating is so annoying: I keep finding out that previous opponents in tournaments that I've entered have been booted out on cheating suspicions. Not nice when it's R1 and puts you on tilt for the rest of the competition! 😡🤬
Amazing nerves by Magnus, proving the majority of kibitzers wrong about his draw offer.
Got to feel for Fabiano who fought like a beast. Chess is cruel. 😢
Yes, there should have been more Classical games, but that is a problem with the rules, not Magnus. #CarlsenCaruana
Amazing to see chess with more viewers than World of Warcraft on @Twitch. (I was once a level 85 rogue 😏)
Exciting times for our community, and massive thanks to ALL the chess sites for making this possible. @chesscom with nearly 70,000 viewers at the moment! Fantastic!
I'm currently recovering from covid; no bad effects except feeling lethargic and brain fog.
I'm blundering pieces all over the shop in blitz, so trying out some trash TV - @BelowDeck is pretty addictive 😱 But I might need a week of University Challenge re-runs for recovery! 😂
(1) From today I can tick something off my bucket list... Say hello to a part share owner of a pub! Norway's first ever chess pub. Located in Oslo Center, near Youngstorget. facebook.com/thegoodknightos… - goodknight.no So excited. 😎 More information to come very soon.
A tribute to Mike Basman - "To the man, the myth, the legend. A true character of chess. Inventive, positive and witty. A heartfelt loss." - Blair Connell.
For some crazy reason I have decided to enter this tournament. ⬇️ chess-results.com/tnr560325.…
I am the 184 seed.
The good news is; if I come near the top ⏭ World Cup. Win that ⏭ Candidates ⏭ Win that, match with World Champ ⏭ Win that, I am the Champ. 🥳
Lots of levelling up! 🤣
It seems to be a sign of the times to concentrate far too much on the negative rather than the positive. The Tara Steel tournament was a fantastic 'LIVE' event! 👏
Great coverage, what looked like brilliant playing conditions and an excellent mix of players.
#TataSteelChess
Probably not the best idea to have my COVID vaccination the day before playing a legend in the @MrDodgy Invitational tournament; my fever is hotter than my chess right now... but I will battle on! ♟
Been knocked out by a cold for about a week, just starting to feel human again...
My first job is to edit a new YouTube video. I haven't done much on my channel for a while, so time to kick it up a notch.
Here's a scene from a forthcoming chilly chess video... (with beer) 🤔
Most people are aware of Shirov's 47...Bh3!! against Topalov in 1998; I just stumbled across a game where he was on the receiving end of this idea.
Shirov vs Andersson, Biel, 1991. Andersson won with 44...Bxh4!! - Inspiration for Shirov's 'Greatest ever chess move'?
Arrived to a beautiful day in Oslo. The hotel receptionist asks me, "You're part of the Play Magnus group. You don't actually play Magnus do you!?" 🤣
Chess is big in Norway!
