I’m a friend (and admirer) of Tom Holland, so not an impartial commentator, but the criticism he’s received today is totally unwarranted. He was describing the motivations of those in authority, not justifying them. Obviously the government of a multi-racial society takes inter-communal relations seriously, and there is an underlying and understandable view of minorities as potential victims. Often this is untrue and naive, and sometimes compassion becomes a cover for cowardice. But he was describing - using the much underrated principle of charity - why people did the wrong things. Multicultural societies always live in fear of communal violence (one reason I’ve long been critical of diversity being a ‘strength’). Sometimes people use this as an excuse for their own agenda, but it’s still reality. Many people are rightly angry about what happened and seem to need people to get angry at
