I’m a friend (and admirer) of Tom Holland, so not an impartial commentator, but the criticism he’s received today is totally unwarranted. He was describing the motivations of those in authority, not justifying them. Obviously the government of a multi-racial society takes inter-communal relations seriously, and there is an underlying and understandable view of minorities as potential victims. Often this is untrue and naive, and sometimes compassion becomes a cover for cowardice. But he was describing - using the much underrated principle of charity - why people did the wrong things. Multicultural societies always live in fear of communal violence (one reason I’ve long been critical of diversity being a ‘strength’). Sometimes people use this as an excuse for their own agenda, but it’s still reality. Many people are rightly angry about what happened and seem to need people to get angry at

Interesting how community notes seem far more effective than most fact-checking or 'misinformation' teams. Anonymity is really beneficial when it comes to taboo subjects that can be statistically measured.
"White people kill other white people at almost the same rate black people kill other black people & yet you never hear anyone complaining about 'white on white crime'. These aren't points of sage wisdom from Maher. They are classic racist dog whistles."
Community note
According to the 2019 FBI stats there were 2594 white on white homicides and 2574 black on black homicides. In 2019, white population in the US was 60.1% of total population. Black was 12.2%. Thus the per capita murder rate was much higher in the black on black group. ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u… visualcapitalist.com/visualizing-u-
