I remember my kindergarten teacher cutting out construction paper crowns with a glittery number 6, & the excitement of opening the big drawer to choose a color on our special day.
I remember climbing into the loft in 1st grade, sliding word cards into the machine that read them aloud, & the thrill of wearing the giant headphones that shut out all of the other noise.
I remember the teacher who played the accordion, the punch-out paper money in the back of our math books, the one who threw a Happy Meal party for her class every year, making murals for The Rats of NIMH, pouring candles in molds, & punching ornaments from juice can lids.
All of these memories were made before I left elementary school & they’re the ones that have stayed with me all these years. Because the heart of teaching doesn’t lie in the standards we meet or the scores we track. It lives in the moments we create. As the teachers that spend our time & money making these things happen for our students, we already know this.
But I also remember the Mother’s Day craft I didn’t get to make because I didn’t bring the supplies, the school nurse who didn’t ask about a black eye, the teacher who painted over my flower “to fix it,” the one who believed a girl who hid her own watch & said I stole it, and the teacher who broke my heart when he shoved me against a wall.
Those moments stayed with me too. They helped shape what I trusted, how I connected, and what I believed I was worth. So while you’re busy making magic, don’t forget to be good humans. Think about your values, & make sure your actions match them.
Because who you are matters even more than what you give.
