5/10 On Friday, @VitalikButerin announced Deep Funding, an exciting new experiment that takes Dependency Funding further by introducing AI algorithms to predict human judgement. We are incredibly proud that the funds for this new experiment will be distributed through Drips. We are also contributing the first training dataset for it. This is just the start for more Dependency Funding experiments!
Deep funding combines two ideas: 1. Value as a graph: instead of asking "how much did X contribute to humanity?", ask "how much of the credit for Y belongs to X?" 2. Distilled human judgement: an open market of AIs fills in all the weights, human jury randomly spot-checks them nitter.app/TheDevanshMehta/status… (1) has been a growing paradigm recently, for good reason. Contribution is hard to measure in the abstract: if you ask people how much they would pay to save N birds, they answer $80 for N=2000 and N=200000. "Local" questions like "is A or B more valuable to C?" are much more tractable. (2) is based on ideas in my info finance post: vitalik.eth.limo/general/202… . Anyone can use any methods (eg. AI) to suggest weights for *all* edges, a human jury does detailed analysis on a random subset. The submissions that are most compatible with the jury answers decide the final output. deepfunding.org/

4/10 At the same time, it also became evident that this mechanism takes time to scale, with the network forming one node at a time. With this year’s significant LLM improvements, we saw an opportunity: What if we could supercharge Dependency Funding with AI, helping both funders and recipients—while preserving the principles that made Drips popular?
1
10
274
7/10 What does this mean for funders? Drips is the simplest way to fund your entire dependency tree. 1️⃣ Funders select projects as starting points for their dependency tree.
2️⃣ AI agents recommend a complete, weighted dependency graph.
3️⃣ Funders can use existing maintainer assessments and enhance them with algorithmic suggestions for new or unclaimed projects.
4️⃣ As maintainers claim funding, they self-report their dependencies, continuously refining allocation algorithms.
5️⃣ Funders can adjust initial allocations as new data and smarter AI agents become available.
1

1/6 ICYMI the Drips team is in Taipei for #TBW2023. Let’s take a look at the action from #FTCTaipei this weekend ⬇️
1
2
10
748
2/10 Drips is a toolkit for funding open-source software through programmable value flows and dependency trees. In 2024 we onboarded hundreds of open-source projects that voluntarily shared millions of dollars with the dependencies and maintainers that had the greatest impact on them.
1
10
348
6/10 Today, we're really excited to announce that we're building an entire framework around next-generation dependency funding with AI. This includes: •Training data: Drips already has the largest dataset of human-reported dependency judgements, and we're making it easier to leverage this data at scale. •AI allocation: Funders can choose from multiple AI agents to create large, optimized funding networks - fully integrated with Drips. •Funding distribution: Import, view, and allocate funds to entire ecosystems directly in Drips. •Feedback loops: Funds distributed via Drips incentivize FOSS maintainers to self-report dependencies, further growing the dataset and enabling smarter AI decisions.

9/10 Why does this matter? Open-source ecosystems thrive when resources flow predictably and intelligently. 🛠️ Dependency Funding mechanisms provide a funding approach that reduces the tendency toward popularity contests and reach the deepest, often unappreciated projects within an ecosystem. What’s even more exciting? These allocation mechanisms complement existing mechanisms like Quadratic Funding or RetroPGF perfectly. 🌟 Ecosystems can vote on what matters to them, using the output list as starting nodes for Drips AI - creating a broader impact and reaching even the deepest parts of their stack. ⚓️
1
10
290
8/10 Core principles remain unchanged: ✅ Maintainers decide what’s impactful to them.
✅ AI agents accelerate and assist, but don’t replace human judgment.
✅ Allocation algorithms evolve with more data.
✅ Continuous distribution creates predictability for recipients and adaptably for funders.

3/10 Why this approach? Assessing impact in the public goods space is notoriously difficult. When it comes to FOSS, we think this becomes more manageable when local experts (maintainers) evaluate what directly affects them. This led to Continuous Dependency Funding: the simplest allocation mechanism based on voluntary dependency assessments and maintainer-led income redistribution that we announced in January. Using this approach, we got hundreds of maintainers to assess which dependencies matter to them and to what extent. In doing so, we built the first public dataset for dependency funding - powered entirely by FOSS maintainers. 💡
Today I’d like to share a new mechanism that has been powering our work with @dripsnetwork. 👩‍💻💡👨‍💻 💧 Continuous Dependency Funding (CDF) is the first continuous mechanism for funding public goods, empowering protocols to to continuously allocate a % of their revenue or assets to their critical dependencies. cdf.works/ Thread 👇
