This wasnāt an episode of Parks & Recreation; it was over 30 neighbors (condo owners) showing up to express their sincere outrage & anger that a developer would propose a 225-unit complex on an open field next to a Whole Foods in the midst of a housing crisis. #a2council
Seriously, thank you for doing this. I donāt understand why someone would agree to be a reference only to harm someone. When I agree to be a reference, Iām committed to being the best reference possible!
Yes. Basically.
Also, people donāt live in apartment complexes. Families donāt live in apartment complexes. This development is a proxy for short term rentals for football games.
It is zoned O - Office. A four story hotel is permitted by right. They are requesting a rezoning to add an additional floor. This development is on an empty field in a shopping center that has 4K car trips a day on a road that see 25K daily car trips.
Ann Arbor is on the cusp of launching its first non-police public safety response program! I've been working with others to make this a reality, and keeping police out of the program has been a key value of our advocacy. #a2council
More evidence that policing needs to be dismantled and reimagined. That badge brings out the āworstā in people, what gave that officer the right to speak to that child in that way or at all.
As a black pastor leading a multiethnic church, itās because blacks are not safe in multiethnic churches. White congregants they share communion with one week, might do something racially hostile the next week. Itās too taxing emotionally.
Back in November some #a2council neighbors spoke out against TC1 and I was surprised by the use of dog whistles used in my neighbors comments. I finally got around to reflecting on what I heard.

20% (or 24) of the sworn AAPD officers are refusing to comply with the Cityās vaccination policy. It makes you wonder what other policies these officers are refusing to obey.

Iām learning that there is a group of people here in Ann Arbor who will bend over backwards to excuse abhorrent, dehumanizing behavior. God forbid someone be held accountable for their actions. They explain the use of racist language as āclumsinessā or āverbal ticks.ā #a2council
Reported the video tweet. Heās wrong. There would be no Christianity without women, without their testimony, and without their witness. We have two women who pastor and preach at our church.
Hey Ann Arbor, letās make thisšš¾ a priority of our upcoming comprehensive land use planning process. It starts with the missing middle and increasing housing density near amenities. #a2council
TIL that it costs ~$1M per mile to repair and replace a road. Ann Arbor has over 300 miles of road way.
Whereas a mile of protected bikeway averages ~$300K.
For every mile of road, we can build 3 miles of protected bikeways. #a2council
Just heard that Washtenaw county is at 67% vaccinated (16 yrs & older) with at least one shot. Highest rate of 16-19 yr olds vaccinated in the state. This is good news! Book a free ride to get vaccinated text 844-900-4892 use the code āVaccinate Washtenawā.
Media outlets like MLive should stop saying Ann Arbor is in housing boom. We are averaging ~200 units/year. The last housing boom was 1960-1980 when 19K units of housing came online. #a2councilmlive.com/news/2023/09/letteā¦
I'm still ruminating on the fact 250 neighbors signed a petition to block 1,000 new neighbors from moving into the neighborhood. This is how individual & community resistance to new development can be hostile, break social contracts & contribute to the housing crisis. #a2council
I was quoted today in the local paper about the use of a racial slur by an Ann Arbor City Councilmember. Itās always interesting to see how a reporter uses your responses to their questions in their articles.

Someone in the thread has already said this, but it bares repeating: Multiethnic ā Multicultural. When racism & white supremacy are confronted, whites complain, leave, or withdrawš°support. Blacks read the tea leaves & discover there is no belonging.

Glad that #a2Council is reconsidering a feasibility study to take over ownership of trunk lines within Ann Arbor. Now reconsider the East Medical Center Drive bridge widening project! You can do it! We believe in you!
Iām a Vineyard pastor here in Ann Arbor. Our entire church staff is vaccinated, as is our daycare staff. We wear masks indoors and we encourage everyone who can to get vaccinated.
Alternatively, you could prioritize the safety of pedestrians & cyclists by designing roads that shift the potential harm & damage onto cars instead of vulnerable individuals like children, who are unable to stop two-ton vehicles.
As #A2Council continues to grapple with a 55% rent burden, planning commission received a lecture last night on how election majorities deserve the right to slow & restrict rezoning for denser housing in favor of a car-centric built environment. Incrementalism will kill us all.
Iām still processing hearing my neighbors use dog whistles about Ann Arbor. Like Ann Arbor is full move to Detroit. Or hearing my neighbors say to #a2council, we hold these exclusionary views & we elected you to enact them through policies & laws. Not much has changed after all.
Today I discovered that I was awarded a $2,500 OpenAI Microsoft for Startups grant! I am working on a new AI-powered prayer meditation tool that will make it easier for people to grow their spiritual formation and mindfulness. Thank you to @OpenAI and @Microsoft for your support!
Our city has over 100 registered neighborhood associations. I didnāt know this. Iāve lived here for 24 years. These neighborhood associations get notified of developments & are invited to contribute to planning changes. So, Iām creating a new one in my neighborhood. Wish me luck!

Itās quite breathtaking how much disdain we have for the poor. In our school district here in Ann Arbor, MI (2nd wealthiest in the state) lunch is free for everyone. This free lunch denial is a diabolical attack and condemnation on children and their families.
