Saved by God’s grace, blessed with a wonderful wife and three kids, and State Representative for Texas House District 25.

Angleton, TX
Members of both parties know that @DavidCookTexas is the right servant leader for the Texas House. As the Republican nominee for speaker, he is committed to majority party leadership and bringing our legislative priorities to the floor. But also as one of the few members to boast 150 co-authors on his bills, he has a proven committed to protecting the right of the minority party to be meaningfully heard, respected, and able to effectively represent their districts. Everyone in the House likes David. That’s why he was selected as our preferred nominee for speaker for the caucus. People devote an inordinate amount of time analyzing this thing. Most of the talking heads, lobbyists, and some members are off base and have no clue what they’re talking about. Oh look at that vote. Or oh look at who is supporting who. Good lord people. This ain’t rocket science. David is a good man of character who everyone in the House likes and who treats everyone in the House with respect. For those reasons above all others he will be and needs to be the next speaker of the house. #txlege
I’m honored to have the endorsement for Speaker from @RepRaymondTx, who has served nearly 30 years in the Texas House. I look forward to working together to build a stronger, more united Texas House. @RepRaymondTX is the longest-serving Hispanic State Representative in Texas and the United States! #txlege

Ironic to see reports Democrats are abandoning their job in Texas over “redistricting” by traveling to Illinois. The Democrat drawn congressional map in Illinois over-performs in favor of Democrats by about 30 points (82.23% of seats vs. 52.78% of the vote in 2024) compared to only a 7 point Republican advantage in Texas under the current map and 20 points under HB 4. Heaven forbid we come closer to leveling the playing field… #txlege

88 were in the room when two candidates were nominated and voting was underway. If they wanted to switch their candidate to a different candidate because they weren’t getting enough votes, the only time that could be done was during the second round after all four ballots of the first round were done. You cannot swap a nominee in the middle of a round. Instead of finishing all four ballots and going to the second round with a new candidate, they left after the second ballot of the first round. We waited 15 minutes for them to talk with us or come back. They refused. We then waited another hour. They still refused to negotiate or come back. We then waited about another hour and let them all know we were resuming voting at 3:45 so they could come back and vote. They still refused to negotiate or come back. Had they stayed, we probably would have been able to complete the second round by then. They admitted there never was a desire on their end to negotiate or follow the caucus process: the plan always was to just leave to try and break the caucus process. So we had no choice but to return to voting. David won. And in accordance with the by-laws and the platform, he now has 57 Rs backing him. Far more than the 53 needed to win the caucus in the first place. He is definitionally the consensus candidate. It’s over. David is the Republican nominee. Dustin should recognize his mistake, withdraw, back David, and we should get to governing. We’ve got a lot of work to do.

No. By requiring counties to pay fuel tax, the state is essentially requiring a county to levy a property tax at least in part to pay a fuel tax. So the taxpayer is essentially paying not only for their personal fuel tax, but also their county’s fuel tax through their property tax bill. That is double taxation on county residents. #txlege
Outrageous: The Texas House just passed a bill to EXEMPT GOVERNMENT ENTITIES FROM GAS TAXES... but does not give individual Texans any tax break at all. We should be putting TAXPAYERS first... not the GOVERNMENT. I voted NO.

SCOTX Chief Justice Blacklock opened his Senate Finance testimony with a heartfelt plea to increase judicial pay: "You're welcome to leave my salary right where it is. I'm not here for myself. I am here on behalf of my fellow Judges, and on behalf of the entire Texas Judiciary, to tell you that I think it's absolutely essential ... that we raise judicial salaries significantly." He acknowledged the Senate's proposed budget would bump judicial salaries 15%. But he'd like to make them even more competitive just to keep up with inflation. "A first year lawyer out of law school who goes to a large law firm will be making more money than Chief Justice Nathan Hecht was making after 40 years of service and as the highest-paid Judge, I think, in the Texas Judiciary." Hear, hear!

Did you know less than a quarter of the proceeds from every Texas Lottery sale goes to public education? The percentage of sales paid to public education has steadily fallen from more than 37% in 1999 to a low of about 23% in 2024. (Src: texaslottery.com/export/site…). I have always found it odd we would attempt to subsidize public education with essentially a tax on people who are not good at math. We should abolish the Texas Lottery and replace its transfer to public education and other programs with general sales tax revenue. If we are not going to do that, then we should at least ensure most of the proceeds from the lottery actually flow to Texas children. That is why I filed HB 839, which caps the amount that may be paid out in prizes to 40 percent of gross revenue. If enacted, HB 839 would more than double the amount of money transferred to public education from the Texas Lottery (from ~$2 billion to $4 billion+). capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup… #txlege

Your speech on the floor for SB 14 was a master class in courage. Welcome to the Republican Party, Shawn. We are glad to have you with us. #txlege
A thread 🧵 1/ of x As a woman, a mother, and a lawmaker, I have dedicated my life to championing the values that fortify our families and uplift our communities. After much reflection, prayer, and soul-searching, I have come to a decision that aligns with my core values and the best interests of our beloved country.
For my entire adult life, I have voted as a Democrat. I was raised in a household with my amazing parents who believed the Democratic Party was the party of the people—a beacon of justice and opportunity for all. But as the years have passed, I have watched with dismay as the party I once knew has drifted far from its roots. It has become almost unrecognizable—radicalized and increasingly out of touch with the values that millions of everyday Americans hold dear.

The Democratic Party has veered so far left, so deep into the progressive abyss, that it now champions policies that I cannot, in good conscience, support policies like promoting sex changes for children during a vulnerable stage of their lives, and dismantling Title IX protections for women in sports.
This is not the party I grew up with. I have witnessed firsthand how the so-called "liberal" left now stifles thoughtful debate, silencing dissent with an iron fist—demanding blind allegiance to ideology, where one must "comply or be cast out." This is not the Democratic Party I once supported and represented. The renowned poet Maya Angelou so powerfully said, "When you know better, you do better." And so today, at such a time as thus, I am officially announcing that I am leaving the ranks and rancor of the Democratic Party elite.

I now stand with the party of Lincoln, the party that fought to preserve our Union and fought to end the atrocities of slavery.

In 2024, the Republican Party champions economic empowerment, by investing in Historically Black colleges and universities like the one I proudly graduated from. It’s the party of parents, believing that they have the fundamental right to determine the best educational environments for their children to learn, grow, and succeed.

It is the party that fosters prosperity and entrepreneurial opportunities, enabling small business owners to not just survive, but to thrive, fulfilling the promise of the American dream.

Mothers around our country from all backgrounds, races, and communities understand that it’s our sacred duty to preserve the innocence of our children, protect them from being sexualized, and sterilized. To respect universal truths, and to uphold the rights of biological women as defined by science, nature, and common sense.
I am leaving the left because the left has abandoned Democrats who feel betrayed by a party that has lost its way, lost its commitment to hard working families.
I know that by making this choice, my choice, I will face relentless attacks, criticism, and mischaracterization. But I will complete my faith walk. Scripture reminds us in Job 13, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” And so, I trust that God will guide me and cover me as I step into this new chapter of my life. It is time to shift our consciousness from the distractions of personalities to the substance of real policies. I will not be alone; I will be with millions of courageous women and men of good conscience, who are willing to place people over political ideology.

So, I will continue to be a change maker and a champion for children. Censured, but not silenced, I will use my voice to amplify the voices of women everywhere —women who are willing to make waves across America. Together, we can nurture and protect our children by creating a safer, brighter future for them. Together, we can restore the spirit, security, and soul of America. #txlege #JoyfulWarrior

I join Governor Abbott in affirming that a majority of Republican House members must choose the Speaker. Any Republican Speaker candidate who attempts a coup d'état to steal the Speaker’s gavel with a majority of Democrats and only a handful of Republicans will never be accepted by Republican voters. Republican voters do not want the Republican Party to cede power to Democrat chairmen, which has been happening for over a decade. The Governor, and the Republican voters, have spoken. Most importantly, the Republican caucus has spoken. It’s time for 76 House Republicans to come together today to support the @TXGOPCaucus nominee. Texas is watching. The nation is watching. #txlege

This is not an accurate analysis. The Speaker has enough R support, including mine, to be elected Tuesday without a single D vote. The statements as to FC are also not accurate.

I refused to make the motion because there was strong differences in the caucus about whether the rules allowed it. I then voted for the motion.

I voted in favor of all four motions, including the motion to support censure with penalties. I assume opposition to the censure with penalties falls in two camps. First, those who do not feel comfortable imposing a punishment on quorum breakers not expressly in the rules. Second, those who did not feel the power of the House to impose a censure under Rule 5, Section 3(d)(4) did not include power to attach penalties to the censure. As I stated in the caucus. I believe censure can include penalties. I respect the contrary views and declined to make the motion for that reason. But I still voted yes.

Like I told @POTUS, we’re going to end the chronic disease epidemic. Thank you to @GregAbbott_TX and Texas state legislators for your leadership on this issue.

Kate and I are shocked and saddened to hear about the loss of Brazoria County Deputy Vargas in the line of duty today. Deputy Vargas was a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. He leaves behind a wife and three children. May the Lord give comfort and peace to this hero’s family.

🚨BREAKING: My bill to criminalize child-like sex dolls & child-like sex robots PASSED UNANIMOUSLY (134-0)! Texas will not tolerate the sexualization of children or the normalization of pedophilia in any form! #txlege

Standing alongside Senator @LoisKolkhorst today to announce the passage of Senate Bill 17 was a proud moment. SB 17 protects Texas land from falling into the hands of hostile foreign governments and entities that threaten our state’s security. With overwhelming support in both chambers, this bill is now headed to the Governor’s desk. I’m grateful to House leadership, my colleagues, the Senate, our staff, and the Governor’s office for getting this critical bill across the finish line. Texas will always stand strong in defense of our sovereignty and security. #txlege

Judges must be able to place NO BONDS on violent offenders. The Senate has passed this measure 6 times with strong bipartisan support, only for it to die in the House due to a few members—many from Houston. How many innocent lives and brave law enforcement officers must be lost before these members realize that some criminals, who after due process, SHOULD be held in jail pending trial for the protection of everyone! Rest in peace, Deputy Vargas. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we won’t stop fighting until this is made right. #txlege

Today, the Texas Senate honored the life of Brazoria County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesus "Jesse" Vargas, who was tragically killed while bringing a known violent criminal to justice. I will never stop fighting to protect our law enforcement, and I urge you to watch my speech from the Senate Floor if you, like me, are fed up with innocent lives being lost to violent criminals who are repeatedly let back onto our streets without accountability. #txlege
