“The programme for the world’s biggest classical music festival has been announced — and it is spectacular.” So says @ivanhewett in today’s @telegraph. I’m thrilled to share our ambitious plans for the @bbcproms 2026: bbc.com/mediacentre/2026/bbc…
We’ve said it and read it a million times already today - but still: the MUSIC. Such depth, diversity, artistry, and many more words that won’t fit into a tweet. To say they have done us proud is the definition of ‘understatement’.
Grateful to the @Telegraph for publishing my letter in response to their article today. A welcome opportunity to emphasise what a great @bbcproms season we’ve had: telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2023…
It’s an incredible privilege to be invited to lead the strategy for classical music across the @BBC. Very excited to soon be working with the brilliant @BBCRadio3 and @bbcproms teams:
JUST ANNOUNCED: record-breaking audience figures, 50% of people attending the @bbcproms for the first time, 3.5m viewers for the Last Night. Some fantastically encouraging stories here. New classical fans: come and join us @BBCRadio3! bbc.com/mediacentre/2023/bbc…
Just pure joy. That’s what tonight was. Joy at the power of music to bring people together, joy at what the BBC represents, joy at being able to do this for a living. Until next year… @bbcproms
To every musician, every colleague in the @bbcproms@BBCRadio3 and @bbcarts teams, and every member of staff @RoyalAlbertHall and at our venues across the UK: thank you. What a wonderful summer of music we’ve had. See you on 18th July 2025?
Huge credit to all the sound engineers, the producers, the studio managers, the runners, and the many others behind the scenes today. They are the glue that holds this remarkable world of broadcasting together. (Also: NIMROD! 😭)
Announced today: @BBCRadio3’s audience increases to over 2 million, adding c.300k listeners both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year - following a buoyant @bbcproms season: bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2023/b…
Whatever your political views, how wonderful to see a senior frontbencher precede their Q&A at #abo24 by playing some solo Bach for us all. Thank you, @ThangamMP 👏 👏
Absolutely delighted that Moira Stuart is joining @ClassicFM in 2019. Morning news bulletins, a weekend show, and more exciting plans to be announced @global. Cannot wait! Full story at ClassicFM.com.
A record-breaking day @BBCRadio3 🥳
More hours spent listening to the station than at any other time in our history, and reach rising above 2 million to the highest figure in over two years.
Grateful to our listeners, and to the brilliant team of people who make it all happen.
As he said after he came off-air this morning, "I'm not leaving!" This is true, however, tomorrow sees @PetrocTrelawny's final time behind the @BBCRadio3 Breakfast mic after 14 wonderful years. Do listen if you can, as we raise a glass/a mug of tea to this brilliant broadcaster.
96% capacity.
Who wouldn’t be ecstatic at that figure for 5,900 tickets (incl. 1000 standing) 7 nights a week for 8 solid weeks?
+ 10.6m TV watchers, 4.6m streaming @BBCiPlayer & @BBCSounds.
So much for classical music being so unpopular.
@bbcproms@DCMS#NotJustTheLastNight
Delighted to unveil the new @BBCRadio3 schedule - with major series, live music, and new names to the station, alongside the extension of some of our most popular programmes: bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2024/n…
Grateful to the @Telegraph for printing this letter today, and offering the opportunity to highlight the misleading nature of their recent piece about @BBCRadio3. Very proud of my award-winning team, who keep on drawing in listeners old and new.
Interesting choice of funeral music, @CharlotteHawkns! I’ve got a hunch that the journalist who interviewed you for this piece may have *slightly* misheard “Pachelbel” 😂
Just delighted to be welcoming @misskeeleyhawes to the @global family. She joins @RobertLindsay as one of our two ‘station voices’ - and I can’t think of anyone we’d rather have as the embodiment of @ClassicFM:
While I’ve been at the Proms, my 15-year-old has been at @The_Globe. “I thought Macbeth was the most boring thing at school. But I loved it tonight, and kind of got stuff out of it that I’d never understood before.” *This* is why we need to support the arts!
I’m so pleased to be able to share this news: after 15 very enjoyable years @global, I’m joining the fantastic @UMG team, in this new and exciting role: udiscovermusic.com/classical…
Son went for his vaccine this morning. Me: "How did it go?" Him: "DAD! YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS BUT THE VOLUNTEER VACCINATOR PERSON WAS HUGH BONNEVILLE! HE HAD A MASK AND A NAME BADGE THAT SAID 'HUGH'!" In my book, that's a next-level vaccination experience.
If this ‘critic’ had bothered to do his research, he would have seen that it’s not called ‘The Relaxing Prom’. It’s a ‘Relaxed Prom’, often attended by those with additional needs. The @bbcproms is for everyone. And I make absolutely no apology for that. thecritic.co.uk/democratisin…
"You are not talking to an audience, you are talking to one person - and they are only half listening anyway." Just searched for my favourite radio quote and came across this four-minute gem. Wonderful to hear Sir Terry's voice again: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p03h6q…
I pressed the wrong button on my car stereo and got BBC Radio 3. Tune was an absolute banger and I kept it on. Now I secretly listen to nothing else, changing the station before my mates get in.
"Orchestral music is the genre adults under the age of 25 are most interested in learning about, according to YouGov research." Yes indeed: @ClassicFM's audience of under-25s is up by more than 40% in the last 12 months! thetimes.co.uk/article/orche…
At this point in the @bbcproms season, it’s easy to forget how remarkable it is to have c.5,000 people packed into the @RoyalAlbertHall yet again to enjoy the very best classical music. Thank you, Ensemble Resonanz and Riccardo Minasi, for tonight’s Mozart fest.
We’re delighted to say that Radio 3 has been shortlisted in the @MusicWeek Awards for Radio Station of the Year! 🎉
Thanks to all our presenters, production teams and most importantly you, our listeners 👏

Amidst all the noise about @ShekuKM this week, this quote from him really stands out: "I also had incredible support from the state schools I attended in Nottingham where music was promoted for its value in developing listening skills, teamwork, self-expression and hard work.” 👏
Is it wrong to hope that the snow means school is cancelled tomorrow, so it’s not necessary to make three #WorldBookDay costumes tonight? Asking for a friend...
The cheer of “YESSS!” from one audience member @RoyalAlbertHall just now, at the end of the John Adams, encapsulated just why it’s so special to have John Wilson and the @SinfoniaOfLondn back at the @bbcproms.
I well remember the scramble to sign Yunchan Lim from my record company days. Everyone was talking about this prodigiously talented young man. Tonight, he makes his @bbcproms debut - live on @BBCRadio3 - and it promises to be thrilling. More on him here: theguardian.com/music/articl…
Whenever I read tediously predictable articles like this, with talk of women conductors “for decorative purposes” or the “window-dressing” of diversity and inclusion, it only makes me prouder of what this festival is today. The @bbcproms is for everyone. spectator.co.uk/article/is-t…
Over 5,000 people, entranced by the solo piano music of Johann Sebastian Bach. A masterly performance of The Art of Fugue from the great Sir András Schiff at the @bbcproms.
What a joyous, celebratory morning @RoyalAcadMusic - and an immense privilege to be named an Honorary Fellow of this incredible institution. (They hired some bloke called Suchet as the orator. I’m sure I’ve met him somewhere before...) 🍾🎶
Over 5,000 people, hanging off every note played by @YoYo_Ma, @EmanuelAx and Leonidas Kavakos. An extraordinary intimacy created by these outstanding musicians, in this most majestic of settings. An undoubted highlight of the @bbcproms season.
Delighted that the irrepressibly brilliant @annalapwood is joining the @BBCRadio3 family this weekend, to present a new series: 'A View From The Organ Loft'. First stop: the Walt Disney Concert Hall... bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0023xy…
Day one in the new gig. And what a beautiful day to get started @BBCRadio3. Wonderful to bump into @ShekuKM just now - hear him live on @BBCInTune with @thekatiederham in just a sec.
It’s not often that you get to say: “How would you like to be Director of Artistic Planning for the world’s greatest classical music festival?”
I’m recruiting for this newly created @bbcproms position and can’t wait to see who applies for it:

We have lift off! 🚀
The #BBCProms 2024 has officially launched, and a scorching summer of music is just on the horizon 🌞
Head to bbc.co.uk/proms to check out all 90 of our concerts 🎺
“Some schools are no longer offering music as a curriculum subject, with others only offering it as an ‘enhancement day’ once a year.” How very sad - and scandalous: classicfm.com/music-news/mus…
Over 100,000 views of this letter since Friday night. Delighted to see so many people sharing the news of what a great @bbcproms season we’ve had. More to come on that front tomorrow… 👀
Grateful to the @Telegraph for publishing my letter in response to their article today. A welcome opportunity to emphasise what a great @bbcproms season we’ve had: telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2023…
We’ve reached that point in the @bbcproms season where *this* feels normal. But then, you have to remind yourself: it’s *amazing* to have a world-class orchestra in a packed @RoyalAlbertHall, night after night. The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Jurowski: just outstanding.
Incredibly proud of the @ClassicFM team for their outstanding achievements. 300,000 new listeners, and over half a million under-25s (LOVE that stat): classicfm.com/music-news/inc…
- Highest market share for 12 years
- London’s most popular music station on commercial radio
- A surge in listening among young people
- Increases across the board, with record figures for @johnsuchet1 and @AMinhall
*So* proud of the @ClassicFM team: classicfm.com/music-news/hug… 🎶
Great work from the team, not only drawing in new and lapsed listeners to @BBCRadio3 but also, keeping existing audiences with us for longer. If you’re new: welcome! And if you’ve been with us for years: thank you for lending us your ears even more often…
Radio 3’s latest listening figures are in:
🎶 Two million weekly listeners
🎶 Regular listeners tuning in for longer
🎶 More new listeners to the station and on @BBCSounds

“This is the best audience, and the best music festival, in the world.” @nicholascollon@RoyalAlbertHall after @auroraorchestra’s utterly breathtaking Rite of Spring from memory. These amazing musicians opened our ears, our eyes and our minds @bbcproms tonight.
This will genuinely be one of the biggest shows of the year on @ClassicFM. *So* many emails asking about it already. Pet Sounds: 7pm tomorrow with @billtu 🐕 🐈 🎶 classicfm.com/radio/shows-pr…
Last night, my son’s friend jumped on a train to London with some mates, saw Anna playing the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony @southbankcentre with the @LPOrchestra, and got the chance to meet her afterwards. The smile on his face says it all (photo shared with permission)…
Brought my budding little cellist along to the @bbcproms tonight. No finer role models for him than the wonderful teenagers of @NYO_GB, who brought the house down @RoyalAlbertHall. Sublime Strauss from @MasabaneCecilia - and what an encore, @ErrollynWallen! 👏 👏
Tomorrow, for the first time ever, @BBCRadio3 broadcasts live from the @RoyalAlbertHall *all day*. Join us as we count down to the First Night of the @bbcproms - beginning with a very special breakfast show from @PetrocTrelawny 🎶
Spending the morning proof-reading the 2025 @bbcproms Guide, before it goes to print in a matter of days. Incredibly excited about the season we're set to unveil in April: a remarkable eight-weeks of music-making awaits...
We’re already looking forward to another summer of music at #BBCProms 2025 🎉
Some key dates for diaries:
🎶 Thu 24 Apr: 2025 programme & details announced.
🎟️ Sat 17 May: General booking opens.
📅 The season will run from Fri 18 Jul - Sat 13 Sep 2025.

France is one of 16 European countries broadcasting the Last Night of the @bbcproms live from @RoyalAlbertHall tonight, thanks to our partnership with @EBU_HQ…
A wonderful leaving do with the best of the best from @global. Hugely excited about my next challenge, but also incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given at this truly remarkable company.
A joy to read so many appreciative messages about this today — and a reminder of how special the wonderful medium of radio is. Delighted for the @BBCRadio3 team, who worked so hard to lovingly craft this musical start to Advent. All on @BBCSounds now: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0025dc…
A subscription to @PrivateEyeNews is one of life’s little joys - and also serves as a helpful pointer for any excellent @BBCRadio3 coverage I may have missed from @MannGeorgia, during a morning meeting…
Celebrating a @ClassicFM legend this morning, as @TimLihoreau reaches his 25-year milestone of working for the station. A kinder and more talented man you will not meet. Here’s to you, Timbeau! 🥂 🎶
I did work experience on the @bbcproms 21 years ago. Heard Rachmaninov’s ‘The Bells’ for the first time - and fell in love with it. A treat to experience this mighty work again @RoyalAlbertHall tonight, courtesy of @the_halle@hallechoir@BBCSO Chorus and Sir Mark Elder.
A very special day of broadcasts on @BBCRadio3 next Sunday, to mark the start of Advent. Our presenters will be in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cornwall, the Highlands, Cambridge, Bellaghy and Swansea, sharing wonderful seasonal music, carols, and stories with a host of special guests.
Magisterial Bruckner from the @BBCSO, and Yuncham Lim playing Beethoven with such tenderness that he held the entire @RoyalAlbertHall in the palms of his (extraordinary) hands. A remarkable evening @bbcproms.
Delighted we’re able to share this news today. Grateful to colleagues, @WeAreTheMU, the @v8_foundation and our brilliant musicians. The future of classical music at the BBC is exciting…
Thrilled to be announcing this news today. A major appointment in the @bbcproms team, which I'm sure will be warmly welcomed across the industry: bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2024/h…
This awesome orchestra of teenagers blew the roof off the @RoyalAlbertHall@bbcproms with Wagner, Missy Mazzoli, Mahler, Bizet and @DaniHoward6 — whose new work ‘Three, Four AND…’ received its world premiere performance. Thank you, @NYO_GB@Alexandre_Bloch @tesskjackson 👏 👏
The first time Busoni’s Piano Concerto has featured @bbcproms for nearly 40 years. An enchanted audience @RoyalAlbertHall tonight thanks to @grosvenorpiano, @LPOrchestra and Choir, @RodolfusChoir and Edward Gardner. A huge work, and a *mighty* achievement to perform it live.
Grateful to the @Telegraph for printing my letter to the Editor. An opportunity to highlight the rude health that @BBCRadio3 is in - and the further investment in classical music from the BBC with the launch of Radio 3 Unwind.
The only plausible reason for turning down a ticket to @BBCRadio2’s Blur gig tonight: the @BBCPhilharmonic on absolutely blistering form, alongside the ever-wonderful @houghhough and sparkling new music by @G_E_Mason. Another unforgettable night @bbcproms.
Eight weeks of glorious music-making. 86 concerts. Over 3,000 musicians on-stage. The cream of the international crop, alongside the best of the BBC. I am thrilled finally to be able to share our plans for the @bbcproms 2025 🥳 🎶 🧵
Dear me. The idea that we shouldn't have a Prom of classical music for young children, or one for family audiences (or those with additional needs), or another featuring classical music inspired by treachery, betrayal and intrigue, is not one I subscribe to.
The sublime @VOCES8 and @kingssingers, performing together for the very first time — and bringing a glorious intimacy to a packed-out @RoyalAlbertHall. The first of two very special @bbcproms today.
A momentous day at the BBC, as we bid farewell to this remarkable woman. Forty years’ service to @BBCRadio3 and the @bbcproms, working with five Controllers — all of whom, bar the late Sir John Drummond, joined us tonight. Here’s to you, Yvette: you’ve been amazing!
Brilliant to welcome Moira Stuart to @ClassicFM today. She already sounds like part of the family. Hundreds of emails, texts and tweets like these, from very happy listeners:
