Burst into tears when this push alert landed. I don't have the words.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this moment happen. Every post, share, button worn and event hosted/attended mattered.

NEW: For a long time, Binance and Binance.US said they were totally separate entities. @kowsmann and I reviewed internal messages showing the companies were deeply intertwined, mixing staff, tech (in China) and finances. 🧵1/8

My friend and @WSJ colleague Evan Gershkovich has been held in a Russian prison since March 2023 just for doing his job.
He now faces a sham trial, and Russian authorities shaved his head. We continue to stand with Evan in every way.
#IStandWithEvan#FreeEvan
The strongest person I know. Evan should be free, with his family and @WSJ colleagues. We'll keep fighting until that happens.
#FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan
Evan gave a thumbs-up when asked by the press how he was. And later shared this moment with his lawyers after the judge announced the decision. The legal team said they held out hope the next hearing would be the last.
The @WSJ front page today.
Evan Gershkovich’s stories have been missing in our pages for one year as of today. This is the journalism that Russia has taken from you.
#FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan
Today is my @WSJ friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich’s 32nd birthday. He’s spending it behind bars in Russia, where he is wrongfully detained for just doing his job.
I’m in court today covering Sam Bankman-Fried’s expected testimony. The SBF press corps stands with Evan.
Was checking out at a Trader Joe's when the cashier asked me "Who is Evan?"
I explained he's a @WSJ reporter detained on bogus charges just for reporting on Russia. She took a pic of our "How to Help" page and promised to spread to word and gave me a hug.
#FreeEvan
Evan is caged simply for being a reporter. He’s a friend, a brother and a son (of two parents who fled the Soviet Union).
We’re not shutting up, and making noise about his unfair detainment is essential. #FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan

The first proper picture of Evan Gershkovich, the WSJ reporter arrested in Russia on absurd charges, in court ahead of his appeal against his jailing today.
So surreal to see Evan, who's covered so many Kafkaesque hearings as a reporter, in the cage
Lots of tidbits in this story, but here's a favorite: Starting late last year, FTX started calling Bahamian banks with an unusual offer: Deposit your cash in FTX’s crypto-lending platform in exchange for interest of as much as 12%.

It's been 50 weeks that my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich has been detained by Russia. The support from friends, colleagues and strangers keeps us going.
Evan was on the cover of Time magazine. President Biden mentioned him in his State of the Union address.

Today marks 13 weeks since my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich was detained by Russia.
Words will never fully do justice to what an incredible person he is, but I wrote a bit about getting to know Evan in London in today's @WSJ.
#FreeEvan
WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich’s appeal has been rejected. He’ll be held in pre-trial detention until at least June 30. But members of the media were let in to see him for the first time in months.
We are only as strong as we are united. It’s that unity, however long it may be required, that will get Evan freed.
Heartened to see this type of international support. Freedom of the press is freedom of the people. #FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan
Over the last 16 months, I've had this button (or some variation) with me everywhere, telling people Evan's story.
In heading home today, I'm keeping it on one last time to tell them he's freed.

Today is #WorldPressFreedomDay. It's also the 5th week my friend and colleague from the @WSJ London bureau has been wrongfully detained by Russia.
We call for the release of @EvanGershkovich and all the other reporters detained for simply doing their job #JournalismIsNotACrime
Interrupting what is perhaps the most poorly timed vacation of my career to share that @jourmentors is part of @Forbes' 30 Under 30 in media.
Incredibly honored (and honestly shocked) to be on there with the great @Adriana_Lacy.

It’s been *five months* since Russia wrongfully detained @WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, simply for doing his job.
I miss my friend. I miss my colleague.
Today, his parents joined us.

Thinking about my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich as we head into the 4th of July holiday. He remains detained by Russia just for doing his job as a reporter.
A free press is vital for a free society.

Whatever you cook today, #CookForEvan. Share pics on social media. Share his story. Remember he remains wrongfully held in Russia on false charges, denied his freedom and liberty.
The Evan Burger is coming in hot!
In solidarity with our colleague held in Russia, @WSJ’s @jhsugden and @eliotwb are serving Evan Gershkovich’s favorite cheeseburger—with caramelized onions and a fried egg—in the newsroom cafeteria in London.

Yesterday marked yet another grim milestone in the detention of my friend and @WSJ colleague Evan Gershkovich: 300 days.
Evan was detained by Russia simply for doing journalism.
Grateful to everyone who continues to share his story and call for his release.
My friend and colleague, Evan Gershkovich, has been unjustly detained in Russia for three weeks. On Tuesday, he stood strong in a Russian courtroom. Today, and every day, we stand with him and demand his immediate release. #IStandWithEvan w/@anfuller
Today marks 250 days that my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained by Russia.
That’s 250 days without Evan’s byline; 250 days worth of stories he’s being prevented from telling.
He should be freed now.
#FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan
So many people kept myself and other friends/colleagues of Evan’s sane the last 16 months, but particular shoutout to @grainnemcc and @paulwsj. They did so much to keep us organized and let us lean on each other. They help bring about some of our best ideas. #EvanIsFree
It’s incredible to see the Arsenal community come together and show their support for Evan, an ardent fan, during his time of need and call for his immediate release. Seeing his face at the Emirates would mean the world to him. #IStandWithEvan#FreeEvan
I'm at @BowdoinCollege today to speak about my friend and @WSJ colleague Evan Gershkovich for a panel at his 10-year reunion weekend.
Evan has been wrongfully detained in Russia for more than a year.
He should be here, not me.

.@jeremybowers once told me that we define ourselves by how we act when the chips are down. Incredibly proud of everything the @WSJ, Evan’s friends and his family have done to free him. We’re still fighting. Every day. #FreeEvan#100Days
The Princeton High School boy’s soccer team, which Evan Gershkovich once captained to a championship, won a game in his honor Tuesday. With the score 0-0, Princeton scored in the last second. After, I overheard one player brag to a teammate: "We did it for Evan."

We’re serving up burgers—a favorite of our wrongfully detained colleague Evan Gershkovich—this week at our NY office cafe.
Evan loves burgers. He should be here enjoying them with us, not in a Russian jail.

For 62 weeks—434 days—my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained by Russia simply for doing his job as a journalist.

Binance said it would stop serving U.S. customers. But in the messages a Binance executive suggested ways it could retain the largest U.S. clients. “Have them be creative and VPN,” he said. He also discussed whether U.S. customers had offshore entities they could use. 4/8
Apparently there are at least 4 Caitlins (with the same spelling!) at #NICAR24? Ran into @caitlin_reports but sort of want to also find @CaitMcGlade and @caitlinsgilbert since people keep telling me there is an abundance of Caitlins.
Today marks 50 days that my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich has been detained by Russia.
I wrote Evan a letter on my flight to cover Bitcoin Miami. We will continue to remind people of his wrongful detention and call for his release. #FreeEvan

56 weeks ago today, Russia wrongly detained my friend and @WSJ colleague Evan Gershkovich for being nothing more than a journalist (and great one at that).
Hope lives on. The fight to free Evan lives on. And it will continue until he is back with us. #FreeEvan#IStandWithEvan
The first episode of @WSJ’s “The Trial of Crypto’s Golden Boy” is out. You probably won’t make it to the credits, but if you do, you’ll hear @evangershkovich’s name among the village it took.

I can't begin to describe how terrifying it is to know that someone you got drinks with just a few months ago is being unfairly detained in notorious Lefortovo prison.
Evan should be freed. His friends and colleagues will continue to fight for his release. #IStandWithEvan
Today marks a week since Russia detained my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich.
Make no mistake: Evan is being held hostage. He is an accredited reporter who covered Russia and its people with compassion and rigor. He should be freed. #FreeEvanwsj.com/articles/wsj-reporte…
My friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich won't be with his family during the holidays. Instead, he'll be in a Russian jail cell, detained on bogus allegations as he has been since March.
Share his story. Save a seat for Evan. #IStandWithEvan#FreeEvan
The annual @WSJ London pilgrimage to Lahore did not disappoint, but we keenly felt the absence of our friend and colleague. Evan should have been with us, ordering up a storm. Please save a seat for Evan at your gatherings as we call for his immediate release. #IStandWithEvan
Texts also show Binance tried to bring Gary Gensler in as advisor in 2018 and 2019, before he became SEC chair. “I observe that while Gensler declined advisor-ship, he was generous in sharing license strategies,” one person said. 6/8
It’s grilling season. A bunch of Evan Gershkovich’s friends and @WSJ colleagues came out to McCarren Park today to cook in his honor. Evan loves burgers and should have been manning the grill himself. Instead, he’s in a Russian prison. #FreeEvan#BurgersForEvan#IStandWithEvan

One of those news days where I was among the last to leave the office. Walked past Evan’s picture as I left.
He’s been detained for nearly 10 weeks by Russia. He should be in the newsroom on deadline with us. #FreeEvan
Just before Binance.US went live, a Binance staffer in Shanghai turned on trading:

I’m a terrible cook, so my visiting sister gets full credit for the #4thofJuly burgers that we made in honor of my friend and @WSJ colleague Evan Gershkovich. He should be sharing burgers with us and other friends, not sitting in a Russian jail.

When working on the Binance.US website, someone reminded Binance employees to avoid the tone of Binance when drafting copy for the Binance.US website. “Great feedback! Sit in ‘Binance.US’ shoes when drafting,” wrote Binance’s then-CFO. 5/8
Mama Ostroff gave Evan the good plate handed down from my bubbie, who passed when I was a child. She was the daughter of Russian-Jewish émigrés who fled religious persecution.
Her mother actually gave birth to her in Romania as they were fleeing before getting to the U.S.
Binance.US’s former CEO said the companies were “very separate.”
Soon after she messaged staff: “Send me 2-5 bullet points of what we think CZ/Wei should know about your work this past week." 3/8
I met @evangershkovich at the start of last year in the @WSJ London bureau. I was a nerd covering crypto, with a side hobby finding workarounds to Russia restricting foreign access to local government websites. Evan found my tech antics amusing and helpful.
My fingers are thawing so sharing pics from the Brighton Beach, NY, #SwimForEvan event, where people braver than myself swam in the cold rain and wind to mark one-year of my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich’s detention in Russia. (I am good for watching people’s stuff.)
Feeling a mix of relief and grief from this most recent @WSJ reporting on my friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich, who has been wrongfully detained by Russia.
“I want to say that I am not losing hope,” Evan wrote to his family.

In my 12 years at WSJ, I don't think I've seen any reporter glide into the newsroom so swiftly as Evan Gershkovich
It's helpful for the world to know about Evan; to understand who he is. So many know him much better, but here is my tiny contribution:

Binance.US and Binance staff mingled at a retreat. Ahead of it, Binance.US’s then-CEO asked staff think about “your shackles (items of your job that require SH answers, access, approval, funding).” SH refers to Shanghai, said a person familiar. 7/8
