Do you want to know how important Broadway is to New York City’s economy? About 14.77 million people went to Broadway shows last season. That’s five million more people than went to Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Giants and Jets games COMBINED.
I said it it my column today but it bears repeating: New York this year is on pace to have 430 murders — 229 fewer murders than Giuliani’s final year in office.
Elections 2.0: Sources tell me the Board of Elections is going back to the drawing board and running corrected ranked-choice numbers tomorrow. About 130,000 “votes” were part of a test-run that were never cleared from a computer.
Over the last 20 years, 9,532 people have been murdered in New York City. In March and April of 2020, 18,231 New York City residents died from confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James says her civil investigation of Donald Trump is ongoing even as "the circus has left town." She adds that she is reviewing all of his pardons, noting they don't apply to state law. @patkiernan@NY1
On the same day of the Newtown shooting in 2012, 23 elementary school students were attacked in China. All of them survived. Why? The weapon was a knife.

Asked Rubio why not ban AR-15s, and he said: "The truth of the matter is these people are going to commit these horrifying crimes, whether they have to use another weapon to do it, they're going to figure out a way to do it." Also contends more background checks won't fix problem
Mayor Adams joins the YES broadcast team during the Yankees game and says he thinks Gracie Mansion is haunted: “They’re ghosts in there,man...they’re creeping around.”
Classic NY1 moment: Roger Clark interviewing a woman in the middle of Times Square about Joe Biden’s victory and she tells Roger that he interviewed her in SoHo in 2008 when Heath Ledger died. @RogerClark41@NY1
No need for New Yorkers to belly up to the bar:
"Governor Hochul will permanently allow for the sale of to-go drinks for off-premises consumption to continue supporting the recovery of bars and restaurants."
It took the Metropolitan Opera 138 years to perform an opera by a Black composer. Here’s to Terence Blanchard, a New Orleanian genius who broke a massive barrier! h/t @Dr_CMGreer
The city is now promising $100 to New Yorkers to get vaccinated at city-run sites. Extra bonus: you're basically guaranteed not to be killed by the Coronavirus.
In a nightmare night for the former members of the State Senate's Independent Democratic Conference, former IDC leader Jeff Klein has lost to challenger Alessandra Biaggi.
Eric Adams strongly opposed the ranked-choice voting system but he's likely greatly benefitting from it. Under the old system, he likely would have been in an extremely competitive runoff primary with Maya Wiley in two weeks.
With ranked-choice voting factored in, Eric Adams is clinging to a narrow lead over Kathryn Garcia in the Democratic race for mayor, 51% to 49%. More than 120,000 absentee ballots will determine the outcome of the race. Wall-to-wall coverage coming now @NY1
At Heschy’s urging, the crowd just surrounded and attacked journalist @jacobkornbluh. They pinned him against a wall and shouted “moyser” (“snitch”) as NYPD lost control of the situation. Really scary scene. Jacob is a pro
Cuomo tonight will totally live with anyone calling for an independent probe into these allegations because that's his own position. The thing to watch is which Democrats are calling on for him to step down immediately.
If you haven't already done so, do yourself a favor and read "A Bright Shining Lie" -- one of the best books on the Vietnam War. Best way to pay tribute to a legend.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson just called Congressional candidate Michael Grimm “a sick bastard” for likening child detention centers to daycare. @NY1
Elections 2.0: Sources tell me the Board of Elections is going back to the drawing board and running corrected ranked-choice numbers tomorrow. About 130,000 “votes” were part of a test-run that were never cleared from a computer.
Spoke @BernieSanders rally with @EnemyRadio. If there was a $bag, Flav would’ve been there front & center. He will NOT do free benefit shows. Sued me in court the 1st time I let him back in. His ambulance lawyer sued me again on Friday & so now he stays home & better find REHAB
I say and have said this for two years. The number of people in Iowa and NH who would talk to me about the Apprentice was large. The five-borough view of him was very different than the national one, because of the show.
Getting Spike Lee to direct the first video of your mayoral campaign is like getting Frank Sinatra to write your theme song. Amazing.

To emphasize Buffalo's traditional buffalo wings ahead of the Patriots-Bills game, ESPN's Monday Night Countdown did a segment where they ate...boneless wings from Applebee's? bit.ly/2PwyXxW
For the last 100 years, The Daily News has been an integral part of New York City's civic life. If you actually care about keeping people honest, speak now or forever hold your peace.
Tiffany Cabán has a 1,200 vote lead over Melinda Katz in the Democratic Primary for Queens District Attorney with more than 98% of the vote counted. Even with 3,400 paper ballots left to be counted, it will be extremely difficult for Katz to overcome Caban’s narrow lead.
Eric Adams had an extremely strong night in the Democratic primary for mayor. It's obviously mathematically possible for Maya Wiley or Kathryn Garcia to catch him in ranked-choice voting next week but he's basically starting the next part of the race with a ten-point lead.
Gov. Kathy Hochul makes a pledge that clearly will make a lot of reporters happy (and a pledge that most other New Yorkers could care less about): fast-tracking responses to Freedom of Information requests.
This is like the first scene in the movie about the ragtag team of retreads who save the day. Then, the star players start returning and tensions ensue.....
So after all the drama, the new ranked-choice numbers are remarkably similar to the old numbers: Eric Adams edges out Kathryn Garcia in the final round: 51% to 49%. But with more than 120,000 absentee ballots out there, it’s a jump ball for Adams, Garcia, and Maya Wiley.
Voter turnout in New York City last night was roughly 17 percent. (It will be higher depending on how many absentee and emergency ballots there are.) Normally, that number would seem paltry but given that there were no competitive races on the ballot, it’s higher than I expected.
To be clear: Cuomo is not saying he wants to or is going to remove de Blasio. But it's stunning for a governor --unprompted -- to openly remind us that there's a process of removing the mayor while also heavily criticizing him.
Mayor Adams is creating a slippery precedent with the media by dictating that they only ask "on topic" questions during a storm briefing. They should be able to ask him whatever they want. If he doesn't want to answer, that's up to him.
Since Bill de Blasio announced his candidacy for president, New Yorkers wondered what he’d do if “something happens” at home while he’s campaigning in Iowa. Something now has happened and his reaction tonight could have a major impact both on his campaign and his mayoralty.
Never forgetting his old Congressional district, Sen. Chuck Schumer just announced that a badly-eroded portion of Rockaway Beach will be replenished with dredged sand. This is fantastic news for residents and anyone who likes to come to our beach in the summer.
Confused why the Yang campaign is really pushing this line of attack against Adams. According to their own accounts: Adams largely lived in Borough Hall during the height of the pandemic while Yang moved out of the five boroughs.
Former City Comptroller John Liu has defeated Queens State Senator Tony Avella in their Democratic primary. Five of the six anti-IDC challengers have now won in New York City. Only Diane Savino won her primary.
