On this day 2 decades ago we went final on a little game called GTR that would go on at, at least partially, to redefine the genre. We finally got a running complete build from Andy Garton (still with me at Straight4) with integrated protection finally not crashing from Viktor Kolomiets (still with me at Straight4) and had a functional DVD.
The small issue is that the DVD production was booked and scheduled to start the next morning, in Germany, and Vik and I were holding a DVD that finally worked, in my flat on the Isle of Dogs, London. We hadn't slept for 2 days and if this DVD wasn't physically with printing the next morning, we'd breach our contract, not get paid and go bankrupt.
Vik and I dosed up on more coffee and other recreational substances of utility and jumped on the only plane that would take us to the wrong city in Germany before print closed. We flew and slept for 30 minutes, dosed more caffeine pills and hoppedon a train. We caught the second train with 30 seconds to spare and sprinted to the printers. We made it by 42 minutes (after 3 years of development).
One of my favourite book series is Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
