About a year ago, this site near South Bend, Indiana was just cornfields. Today, it’s 1 of our U.S. data centers powering Project Rainier – one of the world’s largest AI compute clusters, built in collaboration with @AnthropicAI. It is 70% larger than any AI computing platform in #AWS history, with nearly 500K Trainium2 chips, and is now fully operational with Anthropic actively using it to train and run inference for its industry-leading AI model, Claude (providing 5X+ the compute they used to train their previous AI models). We expect Claude to be on more than 1 million Trainium2 chips by the end of year. Will help enable the next generation of AI innovation as we further extend our infrastructure leadership. aboutamazon.com/news/aws/aws…

When we started AWS, we looked at the undesirable situation of developers spending 70% of their time on the undifferentiated muck of managing infrastructure (vs only 30% on what differentiated their customer experiences) and aimed to flip that equation on its head. It’s made a pretty big difference in innovation and developer productivity. Roughly 18 years later, we’re trying to solve another 70-30-like misalignment for developers, where developers are telling us that they’re spending roughly 70% of their time on repetitive and tedious tasks and code. Today, we’re launching the general availability of Amazon Q, the world’s most capable GenAI-powered assistant for accelerating software development and leveraging companies’ internal data—and that aims to remove much of the muck of repetitive and tedious coding and data tasks for developers and employees at large. On the software development side, Q doesn’t just generate code, it also tests code, debugs coding conflicts, and transforms code from one form to another (today, developers can save months using Q to move from older versions of Java to newer, more secure and capable ones; in the near future, Q will help developers transform their .net code as well). Q Agents does multi-step planning and reasoning to allow developers to string together multiple requests and have Q implement them. On the internal data side, most companies have voluminous troves of internally relevant data that resides in wikis, intranet pages, Salesforce, storage repositories like Amazon S3, and a bevy of other data stores and SaaS apps that are hard to access. It makes answering straightforward questions about company policies, products, business results, code, people, and many other topics hard and frustrating. Q makes this much simpler. You can point Q at all of your enterprise data repositories, and it’ll search all this data, summarize logically, analyze trends, and engage in dialog with customers about it. We also introduced today a powerful new capability called Q Apps, which lets employees describe, in natural language, what apps they want to build on top of this internal data, and Q Apps will quickly generate that app. This is going to make it *so* much easier for internal teams to build useful apps from their own data. Customers are gravitating to Q, and we already see companies like Brightcove, British Telecom, Datadog, GitLab, GoDaddy, National Australia Bank, NCS, Netsmart, Slalom, Smartsheet, Sun Life, Tata Consultancy Services, Toyota, and Wiz using Q. And, we’ve only been in beta til today. Very excited about how Q will change what’s possible for our customers, and being a part of helping them innovate more quickly. aboutamazon.com/news/aws/ama…

One of the most tedious (but critical tasks) for software development teams is updating foundational software. It’s not new feature work, and it doesn’t feel like you’re moving the experience forward. As a result, this work is either dreaded or put off for more exciting work—or both. Amazon Q, our GenAI assistant for software development, is trying to bring some light to this heaviness. We have a new code transformation capability, and here’s what we found when we integrated it into our internal systems and applied it to our needed Java upgrades: - The average time to upgrade an application to Java 17 plummeted from what’s typically 50 developer-days to just a few hours. We estimate this has saved us the equivalent of 4,500 developer-years of work (yes, that number is crazy but, real). - In under six months, we've been able to upgrade more than 50% of our production Java systems to modernized Java versions at a fraction of the usual time and effort. And, our developers shipped 79% of the auto-generated code reviews without any additional changes. - The benefits go beyond how much effort we’ve saved developers. The upgrades have enhanced security and reduced infrastructure costs, providing an estimated $260M in annualized efficiency gains. This is a great example of how large-scale enterprises can gain significant efficiencies in foundational software hygiene work by leveraging Amazon Q. It’s been a game changer for us, and not only do our Amazon teams plan to use this transformation capability more, but our Q team plans to add more transformations for developers to leverage.

Every cloud provider faces the same AI infrastructure challenge: chips need to be positioned close together to exchange data quickly, but they generate intense heat, creating unprecedented cooling demands. We needed a strategic solution that allowed us to use our existing air-cooled data centers to do liquid cooling without waiting for new construction. And it needed to be rapidly deployed so we could bring customers these powerful AI capabilities while we transition towards facility-level liquid cooling. Think of a home where only one sunny room needs AC, while the rest stays naturally cool – that’s what we wanted to achieve, allowing us to efficiently land both liquid and air-cooled racks in the same facilities with complete flexibility. The available options weren't great. Either we could wait to build specialized liquid-cooled facilities or adopt off-the-shelf solutions that didn't scale or meet our unique needs. Neither worked for our customers, so we did what we often do at Amazon… we invented our own solution. Our teams designed and delivered our In-Row Heat Exchanger (IRHX), which uses a direct-to-chip approach with a "cold plate" on the chips. The liquid runs through this sealed plate in a closed loop, continuously removing heat without increasing water use. This enables us to support traditional workloads and demanding AI applications in the same facilities. By 2026, our liquid-cooled capacity will grow to over 20% of our ML capacity, which is at multi-gigawatt scale today. While liquid cooling technology itself isn't unique, our approach was. Creating something this effective that could be deployed across our 120 Availability Zones in 38 Regions was significant. Because this solution didn't exist in the market, we developed a system that enables greater liquid cooling capacity with a smaller physical footprint, while maintaining flexibility and efficiency. Our IRHX can support a wide range of racks requiring liquid cooling, uses 9% less water than fully-air cooled sites, and offers a 20% improvement in power efficiency compared to off-the-shelf solutions. And because we invented it in-house, we can deploy it within months in any of our data centers, creating a flexible foundation to serve our customers for decades to come. Reimagining and innovating at scale has been something Amazon has done for a long time and one of the reasons we’ve been the leader in technology infrastructure and data center invention, sustainability, and resilience. We're not done… there's still so much more to invent for customers.

Introducing Kiro, an all-new agentic IDE that has a chance to transform how developers build software. Let me highlight three key innovations that make Kiro special: 1 - Kiro introduces spec-driven development, helping developers express their intent clearly through natural language specifications and architecture diagrams for complex features. This comprehensive context helps Kiro’s AI agents deliver better results with fewer iterations. 2 - Kiro features intelligent agent hooks that automatically handle critical but time-consuming tasks like generating documentation, writing tests, and optimizing performance. These hooks work in the background, triggered by events like saving files or making commits. It’s like having an experienced developer constantly reviewing your work and handling the maintenance tasks that often get delayed. 3 - Kiro provides a purpose-built interface that adapts to how developers work. Whether you prefer chat interactions or working with specifications, Kiro supports your workflow while keeping you in control of the development process. Kiro is really good at "vibe coding" but goes well beyond that. While other AI coding assistants might help you prototype quickly, Kiro helps you take those prototypes all the way to production by following a mature, structured development process out of the box. This means developers can spend less time on boilerplate code and more time where it matters most – innovating and building solutions that customers will love. Starting today, Kiro is available for free during preview and supports most popular programming languages. Here’s how to get started with @kirodotdev today: kiro.dev/blog/introducing-ki… Excited to see how developers use Kiro, and to work with the developer community to continue to shape Kiro moving forward.

Really excited to share with customers Amazon Q—a new type of generative AI-powered assistant that is specifically for work and can be tailored to your business. Amazon Q can help you get fast, relevant answers to pressing questions, solve problems, generate content, and take actions using the data and expertise found in your company’s information repositories, code, and enterprise systems. When you chat with Amazon Q, it provides immediate, relevant information and advice to help streamline tasks, speed up decision-making, and help spark creativity and innovation at work. Amazon Q is both your expert for building on AWS, and for analyzing your business. We’ve built it to be secure and private, and it can understand and respect your existing identities, roles, and permissions and use this information to personalize its interactions. If a user doesn’t have permission to access certain data without Amazon Q, they can’t access it using Amazon Q either. And, from day one, we’ve designed Amazon Q to meet stringent enterprise customers’ requirements—none of their content is used to improve the underlying models. aboutamazon.com/news/aws-rei…

Several years ago, when we started pursuing building our own chips, a lot of folks thought this was nuts. We heard a lot of the same refrains you often hear—why make this investment, why invest in a team and all the other fixed costs to develop your own chip when you can buy from other suppliers? And, while we knew we’d partner with those other companies for the foreseeable future, if your customers are telling you they’re thirsty for better price-performance, and you’re driven by what makes customers’ lives better and easier every day, you explore options to make it so. We realized pretty quickly that designing our own chips was going to be the best path to delivering this value for customers. We were lucky to find and join forces with the amazing Annapurna Labs team, who started with a chip (named Nitro) that offloaded security, networking, and some other virtualization functions from our servers so customers could use more of the server than they could before. Then, that team built a generalized CPU chip, Graviton, which has been very popular and impactful for customers, before embarking on building custom AI chips—Trainium (for training) and Inferentia (for inference)—which are also off to a strong start. Am very excited about our most recent chip releases at AWS re: Invent: Graviton4 and Trainium2. Graviton4 marks the fourth generation we’ve delivered in just five years (you can see the evolution from left to right in the image below), and it’s the most powerful and energy efficient multipurpose chip we have built to date. And with the surge of interest in generative AI, Trainium2 will help customers train their ML models faster, at a more advantaged price-performance. I’m really proud of the pace of innovation our teams are delivering on and what it is making possible for customers! aboutamazon.com/news/aws-rei…

This is a pretty cool picture, but what is it? It shows how our Project Kuiper broadband satellites will use optical links to connect to each other once fully deployed. If you’re familiar with a mesh network, it’s essentially what these links allow us to build in low Earth orbit with our Project Kuiper broadband satellite constellation. Our satellites use lasers to connect to each other so that if one is passing over a place where there is no nearby ground gateway to connect to, it can still deliver connectivity to customers on Earth by linking to nearby satellites. It’s an important feature we built into our prototypes, and, today, we’re happy to share we’ve been able to demonstrate the ability to optically link our two prototype satellites at 100 gigabits per second over a distance of approx. 600 miles. It’s another important capability we’ve been able to show works in the lab and now in space, and it will be part of our production satellites when we start deploying them next year. Earlier this year, some #AWS developers created an internal tool for Amazonians to experiment with Foundation Models from Amazon Bedrock, and it quickly became a word-of-mouth hit across AWS. Because the interface only required a user to add in a description of the app they wanted to build in a prompt box, the tool could be used by teammates across a wide spectrum of roles and technical expertise. Some built apps for productivity, while others made ones for amusement, or that tapped into personal passions. It was cool to see builders get inspired by using generative AI in a more hands on way, and by sharing their apps with each other, they were actually sharing key generative AI techniques in action. Based on the popularity and feedback, we launched this simple to use but powerful app to the world for free, naming it PartyRock (in reference to it being a fun and collaborative way to experience Amazon Bedrock). It is built on the belief that everyone should have access to a fun and easy tool to help get started with generative AI. Since launching it last week, tens of thousands of apps have been built and shared, and the creativity has been really cool to see (including apps to organize your re:Invent schedule, plan a Formula 1 trip, and find the best coffee in Vegas). I encourage you to give it a try and see what you can build! PartyRock: partyrock.aws/

Nova Sonic delivers speech understanding and generation through a single, unified model, making it easier for builders to develop voice applications that maintain important context and nuance for customer service, AI agents, and other use cases across industries. It’s available in Amazon Bedrock now. Look forward to seeing what teams build with Nova Sonic! aboutamazon.com/news/innovat…

The increasing anti-Asian violence in this country is pretty shocking and deeply concerning. At Amazon & AWS, we stand in solidarity w/ the Pan-Asian community. #StopAsianHate
At Amazon, we stand with the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. We are committed to helping build a country and a world where everyone can live with dignity and free from fear.

I look at the Supreme Court decision today on making it illegal to discriminate against LGBTQ people in the workplace and think about how crazy it is in 2020 that this was even a question. Good for the Supreme Court for getting this right.

Five years ago, Project Kuiper was just an idea in a working backwards product development document. In early October, we launched our first satellite prototypes, and after validation of all key systems and sub-systems, along with demonstrating our first two-way video call, streaming our first @PrimeVideo movie in Ultra HD 4K, and making our first Amazon.com purchase over our end-to-end communications network, we can confirm a 100% success rate for our Project Kuiper Protoflight mission. Pretty amazing and proud of our team. Next step, satellite production ahead of a full-scale deployment beginning in 2024. aboutamazon.com/news/innovat…

Congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on the start of his second term. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with President Trump and have been impressed by his willingness to engage with the business community, listen to the issues, invest in our economy, and his desire to push back on policies around the world that discriminate against U.S. companies. We look forward to working with President Trump’s administration to help our customers, employees, communities, and the country at large.

Two significant milestones for @ProjectKuiper this week. First, the team showed successful tests of our Kuiper network, delivering 1+ Gbps speeds using our enterprise-grade customer terminal (the first commercial phased array ever to clear that threshold to our knowledge). Second, excited to have @JetBlue as our first airline customer – bringing faster in-flight Wi-Fi to their passengers using our low Earth orbit satellite network. We continue to be focused on bringing fast, reliable, cost-effective connectivity to customers around the world who don’t have easy access to broadband connectivity. aboutamazon.com/news/innovat…

Claude 3 Opus, the best-performing foundation model on the planet across multiple industry benchmarks, is now available on Amazon Bedrock, the only managed service offering all three Claude 3 models – Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku – in GA. Adding Opus is another important step in our work to expand choice. With Bedrock, AWS customers have the widest selection of industry-leading foundation models to pick from, with the most robust features to make building high quality, low latency, cost-effective GenAI apps easier. aboutamazon.com/news/aws/ama…

Important moment for @ProjectKuiper as we just confirmed our first 27 production satellites are operating as expected in low Earth orbit. While this is the first step in a much longer journey to launch the rest of our low Earth orbit constellation, it represents an incredible amount of invention and hard work. Am really proud of the collective team.

Today, we're announcing a £40B investment in the UK. We were already one of the ten largest private sector employers here – with our jobs and opportunities spread across every region of the UK. Now, we’re adding four new fulfillment centers, major cloud/AI infrastructure, and creating thousands more jobs. We’ll also continue investing in our UK film and TV studios, as well as R&D centers in Scotland, Wales, and England. Met with UK Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer last week to discuss how we can work collaboratively to strengthen the UK's economy and deliver better experiences for customers no matter where they live. aboutamazon.co.uk/news/job-c…

Taking care of your health should be easy, but the current U.S. health care experience is often hard to navigate, frustrating, and dissatisfying. Today, we’re making high-quality health care more affordable: @OneMedical memberships are now available to Prime members for just $9 a month or $99 a year (up to a $100 savings), so more people can get and stay healthy. One Medical joined Amazon earlier this year as part of our effort to reinvent the health care experience. They offer health care designed around you, with a care team that’s on call and ready when and where you need it through unlimited access to 24/7 on-demand virtual care and easy in-app scheduling for same-day and next-day appointments. This helps remove the frustration and inconvenience of having to wait weeks for a basic check-up or to discuss an urgent health need, and they’re committed to providing an experience that never feels rushed. To make things even easier, if you need medication, you can use Amazon Pharmacy to avoid a trip to the drug store. It’s another valuable Prime benefit, and I’m excited about the impact this can have on both the health care experience, and customers’ lives. aboutamazon.com/news/retail/…

Every once in a while, you get to see a film that changes what you think is possible. Today, debuting on @PrimeVideo, we’re proud and excited to bring the documentary #ForLoveAndLife to show the power each of us has to change the future no matter what the odds. At just 37, Brian Wallach (@bsw5020) was diagnosed with ALS and given just six months to live, with a new baby and a 2-year-old. Together, with his incredible wife Sandra Abrevaya, they’ve worked tirelessly for the past seven years to build a transformational movement to fundamentally change the future for the families and patients with ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. This means creating unprecedented, tangible progress and newfound hope that today’s patients will be the first generation to survive long term. Hope you take the time to watch the film—it’s compelling. (Thinking of you Peter C, Sheryl L, Harvey G, and Mike V)

Special evening last night sharing “The Boys in the Boat” movie with our friends, neighbors, and family in Seattle. It’s an incredible story about an underdog team from Seattle that took the country (and the world) by storm, ultimately competing for gold at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Grateful to George Clooney for bringing this story to life as a movie, and Seattle’s very own Daniel James Brown, who wrote the acclaimed best-selling book on which this film is based. Also special to celebrate with Judy Rantz and the families of the other young men that rowed on that epic team. Can’t wait for folks to see it when it opens in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day!
