To build community: - drop the ego - get off the stage - put others on the stage who deserve it - be authentic - truly care about the people in the community: ensure their safety (physically and mentally) and listen to any concerns - be patient, be in it for the long term

I’ve been busy building a community ambassador program for a client. I’m so passionate about building communities that go beyond relying on a single community manager. But it is seriously hard work! Hope to share more learnings soon 🙏

I’ve hosted many community events where only 2-3 people show up. I just want to normalise this for community managers out there - it happens all the time, especially when you’re just getting started. Don’t be discouraged and give up. Get to know ppl better, listening is key 🔑

I've just joined @RosielandHQ - I've wanted to support @rosiesherry for a while now, with everything going on I've decided now is a better time than ever to join communities that have integrity, honesty, transparency and empower their community members.

Officially handing over the reigns today to a community I founded 3 years ago. I will deeply miss all the connections and fun I’ve had building it up brick by brick but I’m also really proud that it won’t all fall apart as soon as I’m gone. That’s when you know you’ve built a solid community.

If you work in community for a company, you should spend time communicating "inside" as much as you communicate "outside" to the community. Right now I'm spending time on "our community has impact and here's how + why" graphics to visually show internal teams/departments.

My advice to building an awesome community? Stop looking at other successful communities and copying exactly what they do. The successful communities are successful because they are unique and true to themselves. They didn’t copy other communities.

A lot of people ASK for too much from their community members. Focus on GIVING first (several times over) and then ASK. Some ideas on how to GIVE to members (but research first to focus on what is useful): - Your time (e.g. 10 min chats) - Education - Resources - Connections

Another end of year roundup - congrats to @arcthecommunity for their achievements this year! Behind the scenes I’ve been hearing positive feedback from some community members on their experience so far with Arc - which means they must be delivering a LOT of value to their community early on (especially given the high entry price along with a tight application process required to join). It’s also very tough to get new communities to use a stand alone app and keep a high engagement rate. So far I would say these results are impressive from a community building perspective!
Can you believe it? It's been a whole year since we rolled out the ARC app on 5 December last year! We saw the need for a multi-functional, safe space for our Stellars to connect, and we committed resources even before we started minting to make it happen. Today, we're toasting 🥂 to one incredible year. Over the past 365 days, the ARC app has been a hive of activity, facilitating: 191,292 exchanges. 9,371 connections made. 215 audio rooms and events created. 188 group chats/sub-community created. 🧵👇

DMing members with “copy paste” messages asking for things like what content they want to see is “ok”, but you can do better. Doing better: research each member first. Take 5 mins to read their profiles properly, check out their websites, the business they work/ own, their social content… then ask them something very specific to show that you have actually done your research and genuinely want to get to know them better. Now you’ve started a conversation, you can learn why they joined the community and what content would be helpful. This is what I advise my clients to do 🙏

I really enjoyed reading this. Community managers take note - if you target these chemicals it may be the ultimate community hack. Ideas: 1) start a “complement someone in this community” thread 2) Members can “check” off tasks and be recognised 3) Celebrate micro wins channel

Hosting global online events but only have capacity for 1 session (i.e. some timezones can't join?). Create a "IT'S NOT MY TIMEZONE" survey link for people to ask questions, send it before the webinar. That way they can catch up on the recording and have questions answered.

Found this book randomly in a cafe, opened the book to a random page and it was all about community! 🙏❤️ “When I met with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the last time a year later, we spoke about our dreams of building community. He called it the ‘beloved community.’ A beloved community is a community of people who share the same aspiration and want to support each other to realize that aspiration… We need a community of like-minded friends and colleagues to help us realize our deepest dreams.” It is possible to transform not only our home but also our work, school, corporation, or hospital into a beloved community, into a kind of family, where there is love, understanding, and true communication.” - The Art of Living by Thich Nhat Hanh

For all online community builders I believe we have a responsibility to ensure: - We aren't pushing people to constantly engage even when unnecessary (just so your "stats look good") - That members are getting the best experience from being a part of the community - and not at the detriment of other things in their life (such as sacrificing important other life stuff or taking up so much of their time it impacts on their work/family etc) - We care about members and treat them as humans.

I've helped build a community for one of my clients from zero to now over 4000 members globally. I'm now leaving this community in good hands with other colleagues and it's worse than a breakup after building something from the ground up... The number 4000 doesn't mean anything, but what I'm most proud of is: - The broader community used to feel disconnected and lacked major technical and emotional support, which the community now provides on a daily basis - Product usage rates for the client increased dramatically and correlated with higher community engagement rates - The community now has a global ambassador program where 16 ambassadors are providing greater (and much needed) regional community support including language translation, industry/regulatory differences etc - Community members have been empowered - some found full time employment thanks to the community (including working for the client directly), others received speaking gigs and other side income, won industry awards and mentioned the community as a major reason for their success... I've worked hard to build a community that was truly worthwhile for both the client and each community member to be a part of, and that would continue beyond me. Now I'm in the midst of countless goodbyes with members in the community (there are many very emotional messages!) and I will take some time to breathe...

The real challenge for those offering a "new" community platform isn't that much to do with price, features, how AI will help etc... It's longevity. So many "new" and buzzy community platforms have not stood the test of time. For a community manager that's a real concern. Migrating their community to a new platform (only for it to disappear in a year or so) is a nightmare. New community platforms need to convince community managers that they are in it for the long term. Platforms like Discord, Facebook groups, Slack, Circle etc have all stood the test of time (the shortest lifespan in that list is 4 years and counting).
