we are plagued with thinking -- i'm not enough. especially when it comes to working on things that excite us. "i don't think my idea is good enough." "my idea is not unique enough." "i don't have enough skills." here are some stats that we learned over the past year. 1. for over 65% of the ppl who voiced their struggles about working on things: the quotes above are the common themes. 2. for the ppl who struggle but said: "fk it, imma try anyways." over 80% of them found some success: - some version of their idea worked. - shocked by how much what they worked on resonated w/ ppl. - turns out, it wasn't that hard. - or, it was hard, but the process was so rewarding. 3. almost all of them got a boost of confidence to work on multiple ideas they have. it's very common that after 6 weeks of giving their ideas and themselves a real chance, many of them continued on to work on different ideas that excite them: - devs gained confidence to work on music. - musicians explored programming. - writers became content makers. hopefully, this is encouraging news. especially if you're like "damn...that's exactly what i struggle with too." nights and weekends itself was doubted by our team -- that maybe it wasn't good enough either. but here we are on our 4th and biggest season yet. you might not have everything figured out to work on your ideas. but you are definitely enough to start working on it. high key think you should take a chance on yourself. low key think you should take a chance w/ us to help you. buildspace.so/last

10 ideas that were built in just a few weeks. or specifically, the "toy" version of their ideas. 1. first iphone prototype: apple knew that developing the phone was gonna be hard af. but a prototype was built in just a few weeks. this was to test out to see if the multi-touch interface was even possible. 2. the beatles' album "please please me": this was the album that made the beatles go viral. they recorded most of the album in a single day in 1963. it had hits like "love me do" and "twist and shout." 3. the eiffel tower's design: gustave eiffel came up w/ the concept and sketches in just a few weeks. the design was proposed for the 1889 world's fair in paris -- it was controversial, the committee didn't like it initially. but after 2 years, 2 months, and 5 days of building the actual tower -- it now stands as an icon of paris. 4. the rubik's cube: created by hungarian architect, erno rubik, in 1974. erno was also an architecture teacher at the time. he built the first rubik's cube in a single day as a teaching tool to explain explain 3d geometry. but, it took him over a month to solve his own invention lol. 5. the first of sherlock holmes series: sir arthur conan doyle wrote the first sherlock holmes in just 3 weeks in 1886. the famous beginning to the series was "a study in scarlet." this is where sherlock and dr. watson was first introduced. 6. minecraft: the first version was created in just 6 days in 2009. it was originally called "cave game." the game showed promise, so it continued to evolve to the massive game we know now. 7. slack: the first version of it was built in about 6 weeks. it was originally built as a chat tool for a gaming company called tiny speck. they quickly realized that this could blow up, so they pivoted and slack became the main product. 8. world wide web: proposed by tim berners-lee in 1989. although it took longer to build out the idea, the initial design + proof of concept was put together in just a few weeks. p.s. www ≠ the internet itself lol. 9. the script for rocky -- the movie: written by sylvester stallone in 1975. stallone wrote the first draft of this iconic movie in just 3 days -- the man was inspired. 10. the first skateboard: the story goes that skateboards popped up suddenly in california between the 1940s and 1950s. apparently surfers slapped together 2x4s and wheels from roller skates within days, and the idea spread like wild fire. there's no official record of who invented the first skateboard. but bill richard, an LA surf shop owner is credited w/ assembling the first commercial skateboard in late 1950s bonus: the first lamborghini. ferruccio lamborghini decided to create his own cars after being insulted by enzo ferrari. he built the first lambo, lamborghini 350GTV, in just 4 months. it was unveiled at the 1963 turin motor show.

it's crazy how a simple side project can turn into something that is used by millions of ppl daily. here are 10 startups that started small and grew into giants: 1. product hunt: product hunt began as an email newsletter that founder ryan hoover sent out to his friends. it was a simple list of cool new products that he found. over time, the side project evolved into a website and then into a significant startup that angellist later acquired. 2. slack: initially, stewart butterfield and his team were working on a game called 'tiny speck.' they built a communication tool for internal use. it turned out to be so useful that they decided to pivot and turn it into a product of its own. 3. twitch: justin kan and emmett shear initially started a company called justin dot tv, where justin would live stream his life 24/7. as a part of the platform, they built a live streaming tool for gaming, which started to gain traction. this eventually spun out into twitch, which amazon acquired for nearly $1 billion. 4. unsplash: unsplash started as a tumblr blog side project by the team at crew, a freelance marketplace. they had leftover photos from a photoshoot, and instead of letting them go to waste, they decided to give them away for free. unsplash is now one of the most popular stock image sources. 5. shopify: tobias lütke and scott lake initially started shopify as a side project to sell snowboards online. but they found that the available platforms were pretty bad. so, they decided to build their own -- which became shopify. 6. github: tom preston-werner, chris wanstrath, and pj hyett started github as a weekend project. the project was built to simplify sharing code for them and their friends who were software developers. 7. canva: melanie perkins started canva as a side project. originally, she was teaching design programs at university and noticed that students struggled with understanding basic concepts. so, she developed the initial idea of an online tool to create school yearbooks, which later became canva. 8. patreon: jack conte, a musician and youtube creator, was looking for a way to make a sustainable income from his passion. there wasn't existing platforms that could do what he wanted, so he created patreon tailored for fans to fund their favorite creators. 9. behance: scott belsky and matias corea started behance as a side project to help creatives showcase their portfolios online. adobe later acquired the platform, and it's still one of the popular platforms for ppl in the creative profession. 10. etsy: rob kalin, chris maguire, and haim schoppik started etsy as a side project. kalin wanted to sell his handmade wood-encased computers, but he couldn't find a platform to do so, which led him and his partners to create etsy.

nights & weekends started as a side project. we had our first season in june of last year. 500 people started season 1 and 50 people graduated. since then, we have grown to 7500+ starting a season and 400+ graduates. season 1 only had web3 projects. season 2 was a 50-50 split of web3 and ai projects. but, we debated on whether or not to run a 3rd season. we said fk it and actually pivoted our company's entire focus towards n&w... to make it worth the focus, we wanted to include all kinds of builders: - musicians. - artists. - content creators. - indie game makers. - filmmakers. - researchers. - whatever you wanna build. we believed that everyone's a builder -- and no idea is too small or too big. if you resonate with this, then here's the tl;dr on how n&w works: - it's 6 weeks long. - it's all online. show up live or watch it async. - there will be lectures + workshops: 2 sessions/wk. - bring any idea that you wanna work on. literally any idea. - we'll give away up to $100,000 to the people that make the most progress in 6-weeks. - the winners of the prize in s3 included ppl who: • launched their first music album. • indie game. • a local news channel. • a community garden. - at the end, we host a 3 day live event in sf or dubai for everyone who participated. - from there, we pick 50 people from the season to our physical campus in sf to go all-in on their ideas. the season starts in 14 days. we hope to see you in s4 ❤️

we shared our phone number with the public last week over 1000 people called in to get advice about what they should work on over 60% of them had the same exact question -- "is this idea worth pursuing?!" so, here are 8 ways to help you answer that question: 1. ask your 13-year old self: seek fun and motivational ideas when uninspired or bored. if you're not having fun building, chances are you won't build anything great. 2. trust your gut: welcome the cues from your instincts; they can help your rational and lead you in the right direction. 3. figure out your opportunity costs: be mindful of the potential opportunities you may be giving up by choosing one option over another. 4. seek advice from ppl you respect + mentors: gain insights from others for different perspectives and might have a self-discovery in the process. 5. ask your future self: envision outcomes aligned with long-term goals, prioritize growth, and consider the impact of present choices on future well-being. 6. start small, test small: experiment with options for real-world feedback before committing. 7. march madness style idea bracket: evaluate all your ideas head-to-head to determine the best choice based on potential, fun, timing, etc. 8. flip a coin: if none of the above work, just flip a coin and get moving. often times, you will learn so much more by building some motion rather than just staying in limbo. quickly decide between similar options, moving forward without lingering. (farza's favorite) hope that helps! still confused on what idea to build, drop a comment and we got you :) finally s4 apps close in t-minus 15 hours. apply in 2 mins at buildspace . so

attack on titan was the most important anime series in the 2010s. the anime was created by Isayama while he was a uni student + working at an internet cafe. the series was initially rejected, but now: - it's one of the best selling mangas of all time. - sold over 140 million manga copies. - its final season alone made $35,000,000+ the manga was considered "too unconventional." but it eventually won one of japan's most prestigious manga awards (kodansha manga award).
