Journalist/Author/Historian - reporting from the White House press room since 2008. Bio below. Subscribe to my newsletter on Disinformation - also below

A story about Prince Philip, who died today at 99. The weekend of the Kennedy assassination, he flew to Washington for the funeral. At the White House on Sunday, Nov. 24, 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy was looking for John Jr. and opened the door to his playroom. There she found (more)

the Prince sprawled on the floor, playing and laughing with the murdered president's son. Days from his 3d birthday, John had said earlier that he "didn't have anybody to play with" (also: "where's Daddy?") and her Majesty's husband decided that he would entertain the boy. RIP
Hurricane:
"If you can, get out of the storm's path. Worst case scenario, tell Ron DeSantis you're Venezuelan....maybe he'll fly you to Martha's Vineyard."
-Stephen Colbert to Floridians
A First Lady has the power to make people think. In 1989 Barbara Bush visited a Washington hospice where abandoned infants with the AIDS virus were being cared for. Some folks were ignorant and thought you could get AIDS from touching someone. Mrs. Bush hugged and kissed the kids

...in May 1965, the British government gave an acre of land to the United States for a memorial to the murdered president at Runnymede - site, 750 years earlier, of King John signing the Magna Carta. Here, John Jr. holds hands with his Mom and the Prince
The Supreme Court has nine justices, as you probably know, because of the Judiciary Act of 1869, which said there should be one justice for each of the nine U.S. circuit courts. That was 153 years ago. Today there are 13 circuit courts
Outgoing First Lady Melania Trump - who once said she resented the burden of having to decorate the White House for Christmas - will skip the unveiling of this year's holiday décor. White House says: "The First Lady will not be in attendance."
.@RealDonaldTrump is an Orwellian manufacturer of "Fake News." On - of all days - Sept. 11, he posted this photo showing his staff honoring the tragic anniversary. But: 1) It was raining today and 2) it includes the long-departed Hope Hicks and Omarosa (h/t @aravosis)
It sure was devious of CNN's Jim @Acosta to ask the President a question - quoting the President's very own words verbatim - and asking him politely to comment. Talk about treachery
“Racism isn’t getting worse. It’s getting filmed.”
—Will Smith on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, August 3, 2016
(as the #DerekChauvinTrial begins)
You may recall that Sir Elton John turned Trump down cold when asked to perform at Trump's inaugural - but eagerly accepted President Biden's invitation to perform tonight; he seems to be having a wonderful time
The famed wartime photographer Robert Capa took this harrowing image of young Americans trying make it ashore. And to think that there are some among us today who thought that wearing a mask during the pandemic was too much of a sacrifice to bear
In deep red Kansas, 17 people showed up at a Topeka Holiday Inn to see Steve Bannon (free continental breakfast in the AM) thepitchkc.com/news/blog/210…
SNL made fun of:
Nixon
Ford
Carter
Reagan
Bush HW
Clinton
Bush W
Obama
and now Trump.
But only Trump suggests it's illegal. Every president swears to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution - @realDonaldTrump reveals, again, his deep insecurity and sense of inferiority
A REAL scandal is the one sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC & Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame & belittle! Collusion?
U.S. is shut out:
China, Japan and South Korea are now discussing a three-way free-trade deal, excluding America from its economic benefits. These three countries account for about 25% of the world’s economy
A First Lady has the power to make people think. In 1989 Barbara Bush visited a Washington hospice where abandoned infants with the AIDS virus were being cared for. Some folks were ignorant and thought you could get AIDS from touching someone. Mrs. Bush hugged and kissed the kids
Exit polls show that the first avowed fascist since Mussolini will be the next prime minister of Italy; the apparent victory of Giorgia Meloni, 45, is sending shockwaves across Europe tonight (NYT photo)
One of the more delicious details about the arrest of Trump goon Larry Brock - seen here in the Senate chamber - is that his ex-wife turned him in. "It is such a good picture of him," she said.
.@PressSec McEnany left a Fox interview and walked back into West Wing - with an aide who held her umbrella over her head for her. Wouldn't answer @Acosta Q as to whether Trump would accept today's Electoral College vote
1. Elephants are nearing extinction in much of the world (yes, really)
2. Trump admin. is nevertheless planning to lift restrictions on importing "African elephant trophies" (i.e. parts of elephants) from parts of Africa
Just a reminder to those who want the #whistleblower outed: It is a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison. We can thank President Reagan for signing the IIPA - the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1981 - to protect the brave patriots who serve our nation
Trump: "You gotta take care of the floors. You know the floors of the forest, very important... I was with the President of Finland... he called it a forest nation and they spent a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things and they don't have any problem."
When journalists make mistakes, @RealDonaldTrump pounces on them like a starving lion to a piece of meat, saying he's the victim, everyone's out to get him and the press is the enemy of the people. When he deliberately posts something like the above - the typical response is..meh
.@realDonaldTrump inherited a stock market that had soared 221% in seven years, unemployment that had fallen to 4.7%, 76 months of jobs growth and a deficit that had been cut in half. He complains that this was a "mess"
Senator @ChuckGrassley (R-Iowa) says millions of Americans are lower-income because they “are just spending every darn penny they have whether it’s on booze or women or movies.”
.@realDonaldTrump has called John Lewis a “do nothing guy.” Here: Lewis gets his head smashed in on “Bloody Sunday” - March 7, 1965 - during a civil rights march in Selma. In an era when the word “hero” is used too loosely, it is far too insufficient to describe this man.
Attention Ladies: Stephen Miller didn't have a date for tonight's State Dinner. If 32-year old bald men who dabble in xenophobia, conspiracy theories and social regressiveness is your thing, the main White House phone number is 202-456-1414 (you're welcome)
.@realDonaldTrump is lying to you and counting on you to not know any better:
1) The poll he is referring to says 25% of REPUBLICANS want him gone. One in four - and it appears to be rising quickly
2) Last week a Reuters/IPSOS poll said 17%
3) Week before that: 12%
Only 25 percent want the President Impeached, which is pretty low considering the volume of Fake News coverage, but pretty high considering the fact that I did NOTHING wrong. It is all just a continuation of the greatest Scam and Witch Hunt in the history of our Country!
President tells us he will again skip White House correspondents dinner later this month and hold a campaign rally instead. Calls the dinner boring (it often is, actually). This year Pulitzer Prize-winning author/historian Ron Chernow will discuss the First Amendment
Biden, swearing in his appointees, says that if "I hear you treated another colleague with disrespect - talk down to someone -I promise I will fire you on the spot. On the spot. Everybody is entitled to be treated with decency. That's been missing in a big way the last 4 years."
Aerosmith has sent a "cease and desist" letter to the White House demanding that President Trump stop using the band’s songs at rallies. Which begs this question: What music would be appropriate?
Approx. 1,067 Americans perished today from coronavirus. President golfed w/NFL hall of fame QB Brett Farve; later hosted a ritzy fundraiser at his NJ golf resort
President tells Fox News this morning that he had a "very hard" weekend because of the death, Saturday, of his younger brother and "best friend" Robert. Here's the President getting in some golf that very day with former NFL player @JayFeely
.@realDonaldTrump always claims to "barely know" people who embarrass him. He has known George Conway - the husband of @KellyannePolls - for years and has lavished him with praise
Last month, @realDonaldTrump declined to invite American winners of Nobel prizes to the White House; today (as previously announced) he declined to meet this year's Kennedy Center honorees
1. @RealDonaldTrump trashes Nigerian immigrants.
2. Fact Check: Nigerian immigrants are better educated than white Americans, according to data from Trump's own Census Bureau
3. Nigerians in U.S. w/master's degree: 17%. Whites: 8%
4. Nigerians in U.S. w/doctorate: 4%. Whites: 1%
Sarah Sanders tells NYT she doesn’t like being called a liar. She lied to WWR a few times and to the American people countless other times, so here’s some advice: If you don’t want to be called a liar - don’t lie. Not rocket science here
U.S. Stocks, Obama vs. @realDonaldTrump
Obama (Inaugural 2009 to Dec. 24, 2010): +47.7%
Trump (Inaugural 2017 to Dec. 24, 2018): +3.9%
(S&P 500 data, not including dividends)
Odd that Haley would announce her resignation as UN Ambassador the day after a Washington watchdog group called for an investigation into alleged ethical violations; neither Haley nor Trump was even asked about this by pool during what seemed to be a well-scripted Kumbaya moment
Pool asked Trump this morning what he is most thankful for. Even though he had just finished speaking with U.S. troops, he said that he is most thankful for...himself
Twisted Logic:
In light of @MichaelCohen212’s new book, which trashes Trump, Trump defenders say Cohen can’t be believed because he’s just a liar. Yes: His lies were to protect Trump; they always leave that part out
More Orwellian nonsense from @PressSec Sanders. Here are the facts:
Dow in first 11 months:
-Obama: +29.9%
-Trump: +25.0%
S&P 500 in first 11 months:
- Obama: +36.9%
- Trump: +18.4%
Usually the White House press office sends out a transcript of presidential remarks - but no such transcript appears to exist (unless WWR missed it) from last night's speech - where Trump botched numerous historical dates and facts that any schoolchild should know
If you are in the NYC area:
Robert Graham, a United States Marine who fought on Guadalcanal and Bougainville - winning the Bronze Star and Silver Star - has died at the age of 97. He had no family. It would be wonderful if this Marine's funeral was well-attended. (more) #USMC
"A shutdown falls on the president's lack of leadership. I mean problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top. A shutdown means the president is weak."
- Donald Trump, 2013
@realDonaldTrump#GovernmentShutdown
President in Delaware today. Likely a sad day - the 50th anniversary of the car crash that killed his wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi. They were shopping for a Christmas tree. Sons Beau and Hunter, ages 4 and 3, were seriously injured (2021 pool photo at cemetery)
From a letter my grandfather wrote in 1997: a point of light was a vision about serving others, one that lit up our country, one I hope our country hasn’t lost.
Surprise: Rust Belt unemployment on the rise
#Indiana: 3.9% (was 3.0% in June)
#Michigan: 4.5% (3.7% in June)
#Ohio: 5.1% (was 4.9% in May)
#Wisconsin: 3.4% (was 3.1% in June)
only bright spot: #Pennsylvania. current 4.7% is low point

.@anncoulter The late President Bush flew 58 combat missions during World War II and was shot down on one of them by the Japanese. Perhaps you could share what you have done for your country, my dear?
(more) President Obama slumped over when told of the Sandy Hook massacre by national security advisor John Brennan. Obama called it the worst day of his presidency (Photo/ @PeteSouza)
If the Republic survives, books will be written for years on one of most tragic mysteries of our time: Why millions of Americans looked the other way as a president who swore to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution repeatedly attacked and proposed ditching parts of it
Mistakes by journalists aside, @realDonaldTrump has no business being sanctimonious about "Fake" news, given his long, pervasive record of round-the-clock dishonesty, making stuff up, tweeting fake videos and erasing history
Much has been said of @realDonaldTrump’s many historical blunders in last night’s speech. Underscores the fact that:
1) we have a President - and speechwriters - who don’t read books, didn’t study history and thus disrespect it
2) Supporters, who may not know any better, applaud
Presidents have often been skewered at the White House correspondents dinner - Clinton and Bush W were livid on occasion - but always have a chance to return the favor. Trump will stay away for a third straight year - even though there will not be a comedian this year
Somehow the White House forgot to mention that yesterday, as Americans remembered the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre, the President partied w/top NRA executives
Yesterday was the 5 year mark of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook School, which went unacknowledged by the President. On the same day, he hosted a White House Christmas party to which he invited @NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. Here he is at the party with @DanPatrick.
.@realDonaldTrump, whose West Wing colleagues were warned nearly a year ago about alleged wife beater Porter and did nothing - even weighed promoting him - today blames neighbors and classmates of the Florida shooter for not doing anything
In Indiana:
Trump told the crowd to take a look at the "thousands and thousands of people" who were outside and couldn't get in, and said they were lucky. Pool did not see any people waiting outside the coliseum to get in. (Pool)
Arguably the greatest living American - Jimmy Carter - turns 95 today. Naval officer, farmer, governor, Nobel Peace prize-winning humanitarian, Sunday school teacher, home builder and, from 1977-81, the 39th president. Happy Birthday, Mr. President. Here: Election night, 1976
When Jacqueline Kennedy, just hours a widow, went to bed after burying her husband - it was Nov. 25, 1963 - the note on her pillow read “Good night my darling Jacks — the bravest and noblest of all. L.” The writer, Jackie’s younger sister Lee Radziwill, has died at 85
Behind @realDonaldTrump’s tweets, there is jealousy and rage over the fact that Bezos is:
-far wealthier ($112 billion vs. $3 billion)
-yet 17 years younger
-and the Post is doing a splendid job of investigating the president
...does not include the Fake Washington Post, which is used as a “lobbyist” and should so REGISTER. If the P.O. “increased its parcel rates, Amazon’s shipping costs would rise by $2.6 Billion.” This Post Office scam must stop. Amazon must pay real costs (and taxes) now!
Witch Hunt Update:
-19 different witches have been charged with 100+ criminal counts
-4 witches pleaded guilty before charges were made public
-13 witches are Russian nationals
-4 witches worked for or w/Trump campaign
@realDonaldTrump
Despite the disgusting, illegal and unwarranted Witch Hunt, we have had the most successful first 17 month Administration in U.S. history - by far! Sorry to the Fake News Media and “Haters,” but that’s the way it is!
