My Franco-Ukrainian wife Regina Maryanovska-Davidzon attended the closing of the Paris- Basel art fair tonight. We ran into her old acquaintance- the well known Franco-Russian artist Daria Surovtseva. After some pleasantries Surovtseva began telling my wife about her projects with
@CHANEL in Russia. My wife politely told her she was surprised that Chanel continued to take part in such projects and that she believes that while the war is on, such collaborations should not take place. Surovtseva- who lives happily in France and holds French citizenship- told us that she is categorically pro-Putin. I was rather shocked to hear such unapologetic support of the regime asked her how that could be. Her response was unequivocal and bracing: "I am Moscow. I am Putin. I am Russian. I am Russian culture. I am for Putin. My entire family is for Putin" she told us proudly. She told us that we people of culture had to make art and not discuss politics. When my wife followed up by asking her how she could think that way while the Russian army kills Ukrainians and kidnaps our kids, Surovtseva told us that "she speaks to the highest levels of Russian authorities and things are not as they seem" and that the "Russian army had to do what it did so that the American tanks would not be in Moscow right now". At which point we politely told her that we do NOT keep up relations with pro-Putin Russians. she said "Ok" and walked away nonchalantly. Now -Daria Surovtseva is entitled to her opinions. But I do want to know why
@CHANEL continues to do business in Russia and subsidise this sort of thing from Russian artists. I wonder if Chanel knows what sort of views their Russian face in Paris openly propagates at the Paris Basel art fair.
