But in the storyboard, he has Trunks panic and refuse once, blurting out, “N-no, I’m good…!” That realism in depicting a child shrinking back from something unknown... I still can’t forget it. For Dragon Ball Super episode 107, the first episode I ever directed, I did the storyboards for the first half myself, but we didn’t have time for the second half. So it became: we’ll have to ask someone else, but who? At that point, I insisted, “It absolutely has to be Nagamine-san! I want Nagamine-san’s boards!” They indulged my selfish request, and even though there were voices saying he was way too busy for it, he still took the time out of his packed schedule to draw the boards for us. And of course, the boards that came back were once again more interesting than anything I’d imagined. The actual content was tough, but making it was fun. It’s a treasure to me. I always felt that if I said things like this to him directly, or posted them on social media, he’d probably go, “Don’t butter me up like that~,” and hate it, so I’m only finally tweeting it now.

🔎 Behind the Scenes of the production of the Dragon Ball GT DVD Box (Dragon Box), from a staff member at the time. The story goes back to around July (2004), when it was officially decided to release DRAGON BALL GT as a DVD BOX. Right after that, the designers and writers gathered and kicked off meetings about how to promote it and what design to give the DVD BOX. First, what kind of work was “GT,” and what combination of illustration and tagline would best convey its appeal to everyone…? We floated all sorts of ideas, but for the initial announcement and the standee, we decided to center on the kid and Super Saiyan 4 versions of Goku that appear in “GT,” line them up with the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 3 versions of Goku from “Z,” and pair them with the catchphrase “Ossu! Ora mo Gokū!!” We also decided that the main design should be worthy of the concluding chapter of the DRAGON BALL series, something that shows Son Goku’s growth at a glance! In mid-September (2004), we had a meeting at Toei Animation-san’s Oizumi Studio with Nakatsuru-san, whom we asked to create newly drawn illustrations. Nakatsuru-san is such an incredible animator that Toriyama-sensei once said, “When it comes to drawing Dragon Ball illustrations, he’s better than me.” We conveyed the promotional concept and the DVD BOX design concept, and the request was locked in! The first illustration (the one for the standee) came in around late October (2004). I felt it took a little too long, but the result was absolutely worth it. We immediately started making the first ads (flyers, “speed posters,” and a piece for Weekly Shonen Jump, etc.). The long-awaited illustration for the main BOX itself arrived in mid-November (2004). It’s a tour de force that lets you see Goku’s growth at a glance. We quickly finalized the design and sent it to the printer. Then the color proof came back, but… something looked off. Aaaahhh, the paper orientation! The direction of the ridges is wrong (as you can tell from the photo, we used paper with a ribbed texture this time)! So, while they reprinted it and finished it into the box shape, we met with the designer-san to hash out ideas for the picture labels. We didn’t have the leeway to get these properly printed, so we just made clean prints with a color printer. (Truth be told, this part of the design proved to be the most difficult.) Meanwhile, the Dragon Radar-shaped remote control (I’ll talk about that next week) we were producing separately arrived. After we shot photos for the ads, we brought everything to the Jump Festa venue at Makuhari Messe! And, once again, the display was completed pretty close to dead last. Working in a nearly empty hall at Makuhari Messe felt a bit lonely.
