I was 8 years old when I realized I might be gay. but my school district wasn't all that accepting.. I think I knew of maybe one other girl who was gay around high school years. no one in my family or life influenced me to feel that way (or sorry, should I say indoctrinated?).
I was ashamed of who I was. I struggled with my desire to exist. I was harassed almost daily. I was never able to embrace who I was until I turned 18 when I left for college. 10 years of living in shame and self loathing.
kids deserve to feel acceptance and validation. they deserve that much. recognizing pride month is the bare minimum for that, and the violence towards us isn't warranted.
