Dear HS Football Coaches,
If you have athletes who are still active in their T&F seasons, please stop requiring all these heavy workouts before their competitions.
In fact, just leave them alone.
Love,
-Auntie β€οΈ
(And, if you come at me about this, just know I'm prepared.)
Then you shoulda left it at that. You score zero points asking any further questions about it. And the fact that YOU didn't find it disrespectful is even more telling.
Log off and throw your phone in the trash.
Baby: Mama? You catch me?
Mama: Yes, pumpkin! Of course!
Baby: *slides off into water
Mama: See there? You did it! Mama's got you. You did good! Good job!
With all due respect, parents...
Please find a former college athlete who participated in sports and graduated on time (or pretty close to it) to talk with/mentor your prospective college student athletes.
A thread that lots of folks won't like...
After a 10 year hiatus the Drake Relays Pole Vault returned to Jordan Creek mall and vaulters dazzled fans. KC Lightfoot wins the men's competition with a jump of 19' 4 1/4". 2nd best jump in the world this year. Bridget Williams wins the women's vault, 15' 4 1/4"
My intent is to flood DFW with soooo many awesome throwers that the HSs will have to better maintain their throwing areas, lengthen their sectors, and add spectator seats at the rings.
It's not a goal. It's what I'm going to do.

So, I'mma say this with all the love I can muster...
HS throws coaches, if your throwers are receiving private/outside lessons and you know very little if anything about throws, the LEAST you can do is tag along and watch what they're being taught so that you can teach others.
Celebrity sighting!
Without you, there is no us! @MikeCunningham, thanks for EVERYTHING you do! You are the bridge that joins us and the glue that holds it together!
Throwers... please warm your bodies up before you throw. And, head coaches, please create a good warm-up routine for your throwers.
It's really not that hard.
Please.
This is a PSA...
I challenge every Power 5, Super Popluar Name D1 throws coach to just give one kid with really good grades who moves well in the ring but doesn't even make your walk on standard...
A chance.
Give them and yourselves a chance to develop them into something special!
Please.
Hey Kid.
So you didn't make it to Regionals.
Yeah, it sucks... but remember when you didn't make it out of district last year? Remember when you didn't break any records or throw the big PRs?
Well, you did all of that this year!
So, be proud! And let's get back to work!
β€οΈ
THROWERS! Here's a useful tip:
ALWAYS carry a pair of running shoes with you to your meets, especially if the weather is cruddy.
You never know what condition the rings are in, and a shoe with a little more grip could help you keep control during your throws!
β€οΈππͺπ½
Every meet I attend this summer where there is NO ONE designated to officiate the throwing events & VOLUNTEERS from the crowd are asked to run the rings, I WILL be reporting the meet coordinator to USATF and AAU youth chairs.
Consider this a warning.
@usatf@AAUTrackNField
I am a developmental coach.
And I'm proud of that.
And, unless you are a professional coach and/or athlete,
You're developmental, too.
We all have something to learn. But we must make sure we're around people who can actually can teach us...

Playbook exposed!
Our throwers are returning from summer break. Do you think I've thrown them in the weightroom or on the track with a bunch of heavy programming?
NOPE!
We're spending the first few days learning how to WARM UP correctly.
And, the warm-up IS our workout!

In DFW,
- I wish I could build an indoor T&F facility.
- I want to build an indoor T&F facility.
- I will build an indoor T&F facility.
If love of the sport was the currency needed, I would've built it years ago.
Maybe the universe will hear me.
THROWS COACHES!
The absolute MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION to ask a brand new thrower is...
"Are you right-handed or left-handed?"
π€¦π½ββοΈπ€·π½ββοΈ
One of the BIGGEST distance killers for throwers...
Watching the implement from the time it leaves the hand until it lands!
A watched pot never boils! You ain't gonna make it fly any farther by looking at it, so put your body on that throw and let physics do the rest!

π¨BREAKING NEWS!π¨
Crouser's right arm and hand have now been registered with the Department of Defense. He is classified as a missile deployment system and will be placed aboard the USS McCain in September 2023.
Little known history fact:
I WAS NOT recruited for T&F by the college I attended. Heck, I wasn't recruited for T&F by ANYBODY!
I found the school I wanted to attend, ASKED for a visit and if they had a little scholarship money to give; and because of my GRADES, they offered me.
I officiated a meet today and watched some kids improve in discus by nearly 20 ft. And I think it's because we PURPOSEFULLY created a competition focused on the throwers instead of rushing through the attempts just to get done.
Every attempt matters. Let's start acting like it.
I remember the day I brought him home... π₯°
And now he has 15+ tackles, 2 interceptions, a blocked PAT, 4 verbal offers, and a peach fuzz moustache.
Time's a funny thing, aint it? π€·π½ββοΈπ
Okay, throwers... There are three sets of folks who need to watch the implement after it leaves your hand:
1. Mom and Dad
2. Your coach; and
3. The officials
Your ONLY JOB is to THROW FAR!!!
(and exit through the back half of the ring... π)
Hello, all my thrower babies...
Make sure you do some short sprints and plyos at least once a week. It'll make you a better thrower, promise!
β€οΈ,
Auntie
(Head coaches, please do not use these thrower sprint workouts as an attempt to find alternates for your relays. π€¨)
I saw eyes light up for a few little ones today while teaching them to throw discus and it was EVERYTHING!
They left practice feeling like Olympians... πͺπ½
It was a good day!
I got the sweetest compliment from one of my older athletes today...
"I really enjoy learning from you! You have a very kind spirit and I love your energy..."
Melted my heart! π₯²
Like motherhood, coaching really is second nature to me. I might not know much, but I do know how to show kids their value and let them know they belong...
It's what I do! π€·π½ββοΈβ€οΈ
(Thanks @BristolPistol29's Mom for the pic! π)
Lots of posts about unsigned seniors...
What about UNOFFERED seniors who really wanna compete at the next level? I KNOW there has to be a school willing to bet on their ability to develop them.
And don't tell me those kids cant be great... Fred Kerley was a JuCo walk-on.
I love developmental athletes. Raw, unrefined talent with crazy technique (if you can even call it that...).
I am confident enough in my ability to coach those kids because I know I'll take the time that others can't.
Or won't.
#CareCoaching
I normally don't share personal stuff, but the last few months have been very trying.
Loss, in more ways than one, has left me a bit shaken and bitter, but love from family & friends has sustained me.
We have lots of choices in this life. Choose family as often as possible.

You know what my college scholarship offer was?
A $300 credit at the bookstore.
And I took that, and ALL my academic money and turned it in to an amazing degree and the most awesome collegiate athletic experience EVER!
πͺπ½
So when you ask me how and what I teach throwers, here's your answer.
Exhibit A: Christian Cravens, started throwing when he was 8 years old. Became a national champion with 2 years of learning to throw.
At some point, I became the student and he became the teacher.

10% of your muscular action is voluntary and the other 90% is reflective. Most people spend the majority of their time worried about the 10%. Why wouldnβt you train the other 90%?
Here Piper is making sure the joints of her feet can tolerate and redirect the force.
Hey, Coaches! When your athlete PRs and/or does well in their event, we wanna see your celebration with them, too!
Both of you spent sleepless nights & long hours trying to figure out how to make the big throw, jump, vault, run happen & this is the moment you've waited for!
