So, here is the deal. Today, I'm launching a #lacrosse newsletter through @substack. It's called the LacroCity Newsletter. I never even knew it was what I always wanted until I spoke to @rwohan and @MattBrownEP. Bet on yourself. You can sign up here: lacrocity.substack.com/
This is one of the greatest no angle goals I have ever seen. There are like 5 people on earth that can score this goal and the other 4 are Canadians or real life Magicians.
I will never understand why ESPN didn't give Ryan Boyle a contract. He is CRUSHING this entire @PremierLacrosse series. Gets better every game. Best commentator in #Lacrosse. Fight me.
I got up at 6am excited to watch #lacrosse.
You don’t have to follow me, or read what I write, or even like me.
But I am going to love the next 3 weeks.
I need the next 3 weeks.
I’m going to crush the next 3 weeks.
You’re either in or you’re out.
No half measures.
If you're ever at a loss for why people don't like lacrosse consider that it's a sport that was stolen from an indigenous people, played [mostly] by rich kids, and coached [mostly] by blue-collar dudebros.
If you don't like that then go do something to change it.
Why hasn't an upstart sports network bought the rights to broadcast the D-3 and D-2 #lacrosse finals yet? People are out here paying 15 bucks a month for Big Ten Network, I'm pretty sure there are enough fans to make money on the D2/D3 champ games if it's scaled out correctly.
It's okay to be upset about the @AmherstLacrosse news. It's not okay to harass or shame people on twitter about it. My heart goes out to all the athletes that lost their seasons due to this decision. I truly hope that this is not the start of a trend across the country.
This is not a report and I am not breaking news. But...I really don’t think we are going to have a college lacrosse season of any kind by this time next week. Every single sign points to cancellation. How can you even have a real national championship if teams are already done?
I understand why there are so many rookies on this All star list, but there are veteran players that deserve to play in an All Star game and this was their year. Having Ben Reeves make the All Star team when he hasn't played in one game is insulting when Ty Thompson has 25 goals.
Lars Tiffany paying tribute to Native Americans giving us lacrosse while holding a wooden stick is everything you love to see and hear on the biggest stage. Not forgetting, celebrating the game itself.
Imagine racially insulting one of the most joyful and exceptional players and people in the game of lacrosse in front of nearly every single important person in the industry and then keeping your job or doing so as a “fan” and not getting a lifetime stadium ban.
I don't think I've ever heard a commentator express emotion and still hold it together better than @paulcarcaterra on this broadcast. I'm legit blown away. People think #lacrosse is just a game. It's not.
You know what would be great? If the lacrosse community could go ONE WEEK without dousing itself in gasoline and then lighting itself on fire.
Why do you have to chirp EVERY DAY?
Why is it hard for you to NOT BE RACIST?
Why is it hard to NOT MISAPPROPRIATE INDIGENOUS CULTURE?
. @TuftsLacrosse finished yesterdays game against @ithacabomberlax w/ an all-senior line up. The Jumbos won 26-11. I am grateful to have seen that team in person and am also gutted that now no one else will. I understand why these cancellations happened. But it’s still upsetting.
Last year Ben Reeves missed the MLL championship for an important job interview. This year Matt Rambo and Connor Kelly are playing in the PLL championship (w/ Reeves) despite being named to the US roster for the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. This is good. This is progress.
Shout to everyone that told me I was wasting my time covering pro lacrosse for a decade. I remember each one of you. I reflect back fondly on every backhanded compliment and cherish every speck of your derision. I am thankful for the motivation and the opportunity to continue.
Happy New Year everyone. Here are three things to remember for a better life experience in 2019.
1. Life is not fair.
2. You are not entitled to anything.
3. Everyone works hard; it’s not just you.
The proliferation of racist dirtbag #lacrosse accounts is not going unnoticed. You’re all REAL bold when it’s not your name. You are scum and all I want in this world is to eradicate your trashy, fear-mongering, and hateful values.
There are going to be a lot more programs that follow along w/ @AmherstLacrosse in the next few days. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s a shame for the athletes, no matter what division or sport they play. To me, it feels like grand larceny, but in the name of public good.
Everyone is freaking out about Under Armour leaving #lacrosse. Let's break it down.
1. It's just hard goods. Heads, shafts, gloves, pads, etc. They're still going to make apparel/unis.
2. They weren't designing their own gear. A company called Team 22 in Albany, NY did that.
This is bonkers. I’ve never seen this happen in any division of #lacrosse.
Statement on the Young Harris College men's lacrosse program - Young Harris College Athletics yhcathletics.com/news/2020/3…
Tomorrow is a big day for #lacrosse recruits. It can be both an exciting + disappointing experience.
Take it as it comes.
Talk to your parents.
Breathe.
Just because no one calls you on Sept. 1 doesn’t mean no one is interested.
Lacrosse should help you get into a great school.
Announcement: If you work for Pro League A and ask me a question about Pro League B (or vice versa) I am not going to answer you. I am not your inside man. I never will be. You don't like it you can kick rocks. I'm covering this summer straight up whether you like it or not.
This article reminds me of the time that I was offered 20 dollars an hour to coach a club team 40 mins away...and then I found out the kids pay 6k each to be enrolled in the program. I got up and walked out of the meeting.
It's not the coaches getting rich; it's the directors.
Before you pop off with a sarcastic quip about @MLL_Lacrosse contracting to 6 teams, maybe think about all the coaches, players, back room, and field staff that don't have [summer] jobs anymore. Players could lose endorsement deals, coaches have no recourse this time of the year.
What does the Rabil trade mean? It means that the league has signed Lyle. And Rabil gets to rejoin the team where he became a legend - the @PLLCannons. It's not about stats or numbers or picks. It's about visibility. It's what the PLL does best. Wake up. Grow up.
BREAKING: The @WatchPBLA has canceled all remaining games for the remainder of the 2023 season. They plan to reorganize the league and operations before next season.
Players were notified minutes ago by the league office.
Please like this tweet if you want @Dan_Aburn and I to go to the Dome and do a live #ITCPodcast.
(Seriously, we need to convince our superiors that it's 100% necessary. I've never been to a game in the Dome and I can't think of a better tilt to go to than this one.)
I've covered #lacrosse for years. Most of that time was spent as "the Pro guy" or "the DIII guy".
The one great revelation I've had this summer is that those were boxes that I let other people put me in.
I can write about anything in lacrosse.
I can do anything in lacrosse.
I won't lie, one of the best parts of this PLL vs. MLL news/debate is that now I get to chirp at everyone who made fun of me for being the Pro Lacrosse guy for like ten years. Guess who didn't waste the last decade of their life after all? WHO IS LAUGHING NOW?
Maryland's only D-2 team just upset the No. 1 ranked and defending national champions, but everyone will be talking about the Terps no matter what. **Sigh**
I take zero pleasure in reporting stories like this because I know how hard the players, staff and gameday employees worked this season. If you're out there laughing at this, maybe take a look in the mirror and ask yourself why you're so thrilled with other people's misfortune.
I'm a junior in college. I go to every Cannons home game in a small stone stadium in Lowell Massachusetts. I'm transfixed. I can't even talk to the players after games. But somehow I went on to cover pro lacrosse for almost 15 years. Got to make a career out of it. What a life.
How long until lacrosse companies start to retro their own classic gear? Tell me you wouldn't buy updated versions of the X-Factor Gels, the Exodus Gloves or the original Ignitors and MacDaddies. Why are you guys leaving all this money on the floor? Someone should pick it up...
Hot take you will disagree with: Rabil's going to come good if he relaxes and just plays. Don't get miked up; stop being an operator for an hour. Play the next game for fun, man. You're still getting separation, just put it on the net and away from the keeper at normal speed.
Absolutely hyped for @UVMmlax winning the AEC. That entire coaching staff is awesome and the team overcame more than most people know. The state of Vermont had such stringent covid protocols, the fact that they came out of it, traveled so much + got an NCAA birth - so impressive.
The thing that most people don't realize about pro #lacrosse is that it's not about having the best players. It's about finding roles for the best players where they can joyfully impact the game. That's what creates "super teams" like the Whips and the Archers at the next level.
This is incredible. I’m the only non-ops person here besides the teams.
It’s like...I’m the last man alive and I get to watch a #lacrosse game by myself.
Apocalyptic, but hopeful at the same time.
Thrilled beyond words.
Has anyone given credit to @MLL_Lacrosse for instituting a shot clock in field lacrosse over 15 years ago? It’s not an innovation cooked up by the #NCAA; it’s a natural progression thanks to the advancement of the game. Show some respect to true innovators.
It didn’t work out for us. But I loved every minute on the sideline and I’ll miss every single kid on this team. One of the best experiences of my life. If you know #lacrosse and you want to coach - just go coach. You’ll get out everything you put into it and more.
So, you're saying an international tournament that showcases three dominant nations, but uses inexperienced referees and scorers from around the world is not going to go perfectly?
I wish more college coaches would get on twitter and talk about the pro games in the next few weeks. It really would help to get that perspective into the ether.
So, if you were working part time somewhere for years and one day someone from another company noticed your talents and was like, "I'd like to offer you a full time job with benefits to do the exact same thing for my company." You wouldn't do that?
You’d think that in 2020 - of all years - people would have learned not to dance on graves.
@MLL_Lacrosse gave me a job. I worked for @BostonCannons - made friends and enemies on every #MLL team that ever existed. Triumphs go hand in hand w/ losses. Don’t celebrate destruction.
I’ve been really nice all summer.
I’d like to think that I am an accepting and rational person.
I hate this version of lacrosse.
I hate it with every fiber of my being.
This is a fast break drill disguised as a game. As I see it - faster and bigger always wins.
No thanks.
Best part of @Gburg_MLax vs @SalisburyMLAX is the commentator. Dude is by himself and is WORKING the play by play w/ no help and he's doing a great job. Clear, fast, concise — even happy to admit his mistakes. We need to reward that effort + stop the "this guy sucks" complaints.
I’m about to drive 2 hours to play #lacrosse with a team full of dudes I just met 5 years ago. Names on an email list.
We have almost nothing in common. They all have kids and Fortune 500 jobs and, like, boats.
But tonight we get to play lacrosse together.
You get it, right?
So, lemme get this straight — It's not even the end of the first real weekend of play and we have to talk Duke, Syracuse and Hopkins fans off the ledge?
Man, this is going to be a fun season...
I need some very specific #lacrosse coaching advice:
How do I get my attackman to stop jumping when he shoots? He beats his man and then jumps and loses all his power and accuracy on his shots, often getting slammed into the ground afterwards.
(Yelling is not working.)
Never trust anyone that wraps their sidewalls around the plastic. If you can't get a functional pocket with knots and interlocks then you can't actually string. I said what I said.
America: How do we get the rest of the world to like us?
Rest of the World: Uhm...You can't.
America: I know! Let's show them up by winning the most prestigious trophy in the sport that they care about the most!
Rest of the World: ...We somehow hate you more, now.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the first in a new series of articles I like to call, “The Underrateds”. It’s a tribute to some of the players that we didn’t talk about enough in 2020. (This is the DI version, DII and #DIIILife are on the way.) -
insidelacrosse.com/article/2…
One thing I don't get about DII and DIII matchups - why don't you have someone live-tweeting the game? How much would you pay for that just to increase your national visibility on social media? How is this not a business? No one needs the eyeballs more than you do. Figure it out.
There are people in lacrosse that don’t like Greg. They don’t like him because he is outspoken, strong in his viewpoints and doesn’t back down. That Greg isn’t going anywhere.
I will miss seeing him play every weekend. He transformed the game and redefined the faceoff position.
After 22 years, @GregBeast32 is officially retiring from playing.⠀
⠀
Greg Gurenlian reinvented the position, pioneering new techniques and training in the game. ⠀
⠀
The Beast has hung up the cleats.
The greatest all around #lacrosse player ever. Made face-offs cool. Brought unprecedented shake to the game. Offense and defense. An incredible ambassador - K18 helped to build pro lacrosse.
Instead of writing up players I should be writing up the coaches.
“Flip flops, yells too much, never praises players, only communicates by screaming ‘WHY?!’”
I have confirmed with multiple sources that @RattlersLax have shuttered their front office and closed shop. Additionally, Jim Davis is out as the owner and the team is now in limbo. More to come...
People have reached out after this #MLL news and thanked me for covering their team and I honestly don't know what to say to them. It takes a special kind of person to thank someone for their work after they lose their job. Those are the people that worked for these teams.
All-Star Game format @PremierLacrosse should bring back this summer: Young Guns vs. Veterans.
Don't you want to see this rookie class and second-year players versus the rest of the league?
Hey, if you ever wondered why I rarely cover Quinnipiac, it's because their SIDs and Coaches haven't returned an email or a phone call from me or my staff for the last 5 years.
FINAL
@TuftsLacrosse 15
@DartmouthMLax 9
An exciting fourth quarter made for an exciting finish here in Hanover as #DIII won this battle of the divisions. Tufts had periods of dominance - particularly in the 2nd and 3rd quarters - but Dartmouth didn’t just roll over. Fun tilt.
I have lost count of how many times I’ve read this piece from @Julesheningburg. It puts me on the ground every time. If this doesn’t make you sad and/or angry then I don’t know what to say to you.
insidelacrosse.com/article/j…
If you're in charge of a D1 men's #lacrosse team that still uses .pdf's for stats, just know that I want to fight you every time I pull up your page for research.
This is my 13th season covering professional lacrosse, but — like a ton of other #lacrosse fans — last weekend I saw my first @PremierLacrosse game. Here are my thoughts on that experience —
insidelacrosse.com/article/t…
It’s inspiring to hear Dave Neeleman talk about how everyone told him that bringing a DI lacrosse program to Utah was impossible and how he just did it anyway. Lacrosse needs more people like him to invest their time, money and passion for the sport to grow. #LaxIndustrySummit
There were many days where I would question how intensely I covered the MLL. I felt like I chose the wrong path all the time. I stuck with it out of sheer stubbornness and belief and I'm so lucky to have built that into a career. Thanks to everyone that helped me.
Happy Holidays.
