Mawlana Shah Karim was laid to rest today at a private burial ceremony in Aswan, Egypt. Mawlana Hazar Imam and his family were present, with senior leaders of the Jamat. The Governor of Aswan facilitated and participated in a dignified procession through the city to the banks of the River Nile. Mawlana Shah Karim’s casket was transferred by boat in a ceremonial crossing to the mausoleum of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah. The janaza (casket) was carried by hand to the hilltop mausoleum, where Shah Karim’s body was interred. After the ceremony, leaders present had the opportunity to express condolences to the family, and the Governor of Aswan presented Mawlana Hazar Imam with a symbolic key to the City of Aswan as a mark of respect. A new mausoleum for Mawlana Shah Karim will be constructed as his final resting place on land adjacent to the existing structure. Egypt was the centre of the Fatimid Caliphate, which was governed by Ismaili Imams during the 10th and 11th centuries. The Fatimid Imam-Caliphs founded the city of Cairo, a major centre of learning, culture, and trade. Their support of pluralism, education and the arts led to a series of advancements in science, architecture, and philosophy, and their legacy can be observed today in the rich history and culture of the region. Aswan is the final resting place of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah and his wife, Mata Salamat, both of whom enjoyed warm relations with the people of Aswan. This relationship was sustained by Mawlana Shah Karim through the continuation of the development work of the Om Habibeh Foundation and later the Aga Khan Foundation. Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah’s mausoleum, constructed from limestone featuring a central dome with arched windows, is a landmark in Aswan. Message from His Highness the Aga Khan The past two weeks have been deeply emotional for the Ismaili community, and for all those around the world who had known my father or been touched by his work. I am awed by the outpourings of affection and respect for my father and the impact he made during his lifetime. His is indeed an immense legacy for us all to carry on. On behalf of my family and me, I would like to express our deepest gratitude and admiration for the outstanding way in which our community immediately and seamlessly arranged the events that took place in Lisbon and Aswan. Beyond the flawless execution of the events themselves, millions of people in over 70 countries were able to participate through video streaming, images, and narration on The Ismaili digital channels. Organising this involved a small number of our staff, and a huge number of volunteers working around the clock, with a clear unifying goal of holding a graceful series of events made widely accessible to the community wherever physically possible. This was done with sensitivity and care for all those participating. My uncle, siblings, our children, and I see and appreciate all those who were involved – not just the leaders who were dealing directly with my family and me, but every single person who contributed, wherever they are. Our tradition of volunteer service and its effectiveness is a source of enormous strength for our community, and I feel fortunate to be able to call on this for the benefit of my Jamat. Well done to all involved, and especially to the handful of senior leaders who worked day and night to orchestrate all of this, and who provided tremendous support to my family and stable leadership to the community at this critical and difficult time. Knowing that we can rely on each other at a time like this is a source of the greatest comfort and reassurance. The Jamat gathered at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles on 12 July 2025 experienced the first didar of our beloved 50th Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan. Mawlana Hazar Imam, who was accompanied by Prince Irfan and Prince Sinan, conveyed guidance and blessings for the worldwide Jamat. He thanked the volunteers for their efforts in organising the visit. Hazar Imam also granted a separate mulaqat to young members of the Jamat. Mukhi Saheb of Paris Principal Jamatkhana submitted Bayah to the Imam on behalf of the Jamat and Aiaze Mitha, President of the Ismaili Council for France, delivered a welcome address. To commemorate the historic event, the Jamat prepared an art installation entitled Ensemble-Together, representing the community’s individual and collective stories. The artwork is made up of symbolic plants and fruits including the Mangrove, which represents migration across the Indian Ocean—from Gujarat to Madagascar and East Africa; an Olive Tree, symbolising the welcome the Jamat found in France and the countries of its jurisdiction; the Pomegranate, honouring members of the Jamat from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and India; the Fig, commemorating those who journeyed from Syria and other parts of the world; and Grape Leaves, representing the extension of the community to include family members from different faiths and backgrounds. The fruits and leaves were inscribed with hundreds of hand-written messages by members of the Jamat and multi-faith family members of all ages, expressing their commitment to care for the environment and to serve the Imam and his Jamat. Mawlana Hazar Imam today concluded a visit to Qatar, where he met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and His Excellency Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Fund for Development, to strengthen collaboration in global development and culture. Hazar Imam was accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad. Two agreements were signed during the visit: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Qatar Fund for Development that aims to advance inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in support of countries facing urgent and multifaceted challenges; and a collaboration agreement between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Qatar Museums. The agreements will enable deeper collaboration in regions of common interest, including Central and South Asia and the Middle East, in fields such as economic empowerment, healthcare, climate resilience, education, training for heritage preservation, urban revitalisation, and music. The visit continues the enduring engagement of the Ismaili Imamat with countries in the Gulf region, including the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sultanate of Oman. Collaboration with institutions based in Qatar had begun in 2010 when Mawlana Shah Karim visited Doha at the conclusion of the 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. At a special Homage ceremony in Lisbon on Tuesday 11 February, Mawlana Hazar Imam will grant an audience to senior leaders of the Jamat, who will pledge their allegiance to the 50th Imam of the Ismailis on behalf of the global Jamat. Arrangements have been made to screen the ceremony live at Jamatkhanas only for members of the Jamat to participate in this landmark moment in each of our lives. The event is expected to start at 11:00 GMT and coverage will begin from 10:00 GMT. It is anticipated that Hazar Imam will ordain an update to the Ismaili constitution and bless the Jamat with Irshad Mubarak.

Tomorrow, Mawlana Shah Karim’s funeral will take place at the Ismaili Centre Lisbon, and will be open to invited guests only. The global Jamat will participate in the ceremony through a broadcast in Jamatkhanas and on The Ismaili TV, to begin from 10:00 GMT. Today, Mawlana Hazar Imam attended a high-level event at the Nutrition for Growth Summit in Paris, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron, reaffirming AKDN’s commitment to advancing nutrition and food security. The Summit brings together world leaders to address malnutrition, a major threat to human development, particularly in regions facing poverty, conflict and climate change. The concept of nass evolved in the early decades of Shia Islam, when several people claimed the Imamat for themselves.
