Advice for myself and for fellow artists:
Before blaming external factors for your perceived lack of success, look internally and see what YOU can be doing better.
If you see an artist selling for more than you and that bothers you here are 6 Do's and Dont's to keep in mind:
(1) DON'T compare yourself to others.
(2) DO compare your current self to your past self.
(3) DON'T react from a place of jealousy.
(4) DO react from a place of curiosity and a desire to learn. Study artists who have achieved what you hope to achieve. Reach out to them from a place of curiosity, ask for advice, reverse engineer what they've done, and learn from them.
(5) DON'T drag other artists down in an attempt to lift yourself up.
(6) DO take a hard and honest look inward. Focus on the things you have control over and find areas you can improve in your own art.
Jealousy and blaming others is lame and a major turn-off to fellow artists and potential collectors, but more importantly, jealousy will cloud the mind, distort reality, and ultimately prevent us from growing as artists.
When we inevitably hit a wall as artists and get frustrated, our energy is best spent focusing on the things we have control over and can improve upon so that we can continue marching towards that best version of ourselves as artists.
