In October 1964, after a 12-week training course held five evenings a week at James Messer Ball Park, TPD launched its first canine corps with a dozen German Shepherds. The modern K-9 unit was reestablished in 1982, modeled after Baltimore's.

In 1925, the city minutes recorded $380 spent on a police motorcycle — believed to be the first. By 1939, TPD was equipped with two radio-equipped automobiles and three motorcycles, plus two cars officers owned personally, allowing 24-hour patrol for the very first time.
