Today marks a pivotal day in America's history. On July 1, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg commenced, as the Union and Confederate armies fought in a bloody three-day battle during the Civil War. Four months later, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address, uniting our nation and reaffirming our principles of freedom, liberty, and equality. 🇺🇸

One of our core missions at the GLO is to restore, enhance, and protect the Texas coast for future generations. Back in March, Commissioner Buckingham traveled to League City to announce that the GLO has awarded over $39 million for coastal preservation and fortification projects in Texas’ Upper Gulf Coast Region. These projects are through the GLO's Coastal Management Program (CMP) Grant Cycle 31 and Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act (CEPRA) program Cycle 14. The GLO is proud to provide funding for these crucial projects that will help with beach nourishment, dune restoration, coastal habitat preservation, water quality enhancement, and much more.

Commissioner Buckingham announced today that a project to remove a nearly 80,000-square-foot abandoned dry dock in Port Bolivar has commenced. The GLO will provide over $3.8 million to remove the navigational hazard, with $2 million in Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funding and $1,827,142 from the Surface Damage Account. "In these waters, the historic Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry helps support coastal tourism and the island's community, while millions of cargo ships transport billions of dollars of goods, making safe navigation in the area essential to maintaining and sharpening Texas's economic competitiveness. Removing this abandoned dry dock will eliminate it as a potentially serious navigational hazard after hurricane storm surges and as a threat to maritime commerce in Texas." - Commissioner Buckingham More details here: glo.texas.gov/about-glo/pres…
