Real Madrid’s men’s team last played at the Bernabeu on 9 March, they play again at home on 29 March. They have a state of the art retractable pitch with greenhouse environment under it. Yet, the women’s team are playing on this shit surface. Give me strength.
Very sad day. Those involved in women's football have spent decades advocating for women to be able to reap all the benefits that sports provides a person (be it socially, emotionally, physically, mentally, or in so many other ways). That has meant that women's... 1/
This is truly incredible. The government is meeting every demand of the @Lionesses following the Euros. Equal access in schools, investment, a minimum of two hours of PE a week (primary and secondary). A remarkable achievement pioneered by…1/ theguardian.com/sport/2023/m…
Chelsea are the first football club to have both their men's and women's teams in the Champions League final in the same season! 🔵
Watch BOTH matches live on BT Sport later this month 🏆
Chelsea will get £25k for winning the Women’s FA Cup, the winner of the Men’s FA Cup gets £1.8m. In the first round proper women’s teams get £850, men’s get £22,629 and the gap gets bigger and bigger.
How can the women’s game be expected to close the gap quality wise (though…1/
Greenwood leaves the pitch in a neck brace, with an oxygen mask and wrapped in a blanket on a stretch. She was responsive. Bright and Stanway both went over to squeeze her hand.
Emma Hayes: "I'm not talking about [my future], you are. I'm talking about going off with my team and having a long strong drink, the season's over, I'm wanting to be carried home" 😂😂😂
£2.5m prize money. Too fucking right. Billie Jean King led the way, we need BJK’s willing to tip over the boat in every sport. Equal pay in tennis should be mirrored in all other sports.
Crikey, I’m off the day-to-day beat this month but the FA really need to come out with a detailed explanation of why City and Arsenal games are allowed to be called off while Bristol City had to play. A thread 🧵👇
So, an insight into being a newspaper journalist covering a game like that. First off, because of the late kick off and our print deadline for the first edition, we have to file a runner. A runner, is when you file a chunk of copy at half-time, then some second half copy on…1/
I think it says a lot that a woman has to carefully record her abuse and then expose it, and herself, publicly to be believed. More needs to be done to a) support survivors of abuse and b) to change a system of entitlement and protection that makes footballers feel immune.
Putellas, Mead, Katoto, Kelly, Simon, Brazil, Ziu, Boye-Hlorkah, Magill, Hegerberg, Press, Macario…
Then, the day after Miedema likely does her ACL (confirmation pending) Infantino decides to announce a new Club World Cup for the women’s game and Olympics expansion? Madness. 1/
Emma Hayes on Sam Kerr: "Sam has our full support, she knows that. It's a difficult time for her. Of course I can't comment, you know that. I can say that I know she's pleaded not guilty and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardise anything for Sam by speaking about it... 1/
Lots of anger at the BBC but there should be more at the government, both for its anti refugee/migrant/working class policies and its manipulation of the publicly funded broadcaster.
🚨 News: The UWCL will be able to be watched for free on BT Sport. "BT Sport is making Chelsea v Barcelona in the UWCL final on Sunday 16 May available for anyone to watch via a range of platforms, enabling fans to watch the game without a subscription."
📆 1921: “There are physical reasons why the game is harmful to women. It's a rough game … but it is much more harmful to women. They may receive injuries from which they may never recover”.

Liverpool women: underfunded, under-supported and now relegated.
I hope it tarnishes that Premier League trophy slightly. The players, manager and fans of the women's team deserve better.
Am here for the footballing drama, but if I see a single thing that attempts to use this poor World Cup run to undermine or mock the campaigning efforts of the USWNT I’m going to kick, the fuck, off. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I needed to sort childcare for James with very little notice as my husband (a train driver) was working an early shift today. Arsenal very kindly allowed me to bring James while I covered the celebrations and being able to share this moment with my lad was very special.
Obviously Emma Hayes is a huge loss to Chelsea and the WSL but, as a parent, I'm so so so delighted that it's looking like she has the opportunity of a job that will give her a much better work/life balance than club football can. In that respect, the demands of club... 1/
Had a lovely lie in and woke up to more wonderful people (99.98% men) telling me I’m not a feminist and what sexism really is. Thanks guys! It’s so lovely to have such wonderful allies fighting the patriarchy with me.
So, let’s answer some of the points.
A thread 🧵👇
With increased coverage comes increased trolling. Don’t let these bastards, who don’t think their mum’s, sisters, daughters, female friends should aspire to play the game or that expect the level of the product to match something that’s had a 100+ year head start, get you down.
🧵 Thank you so much oh great pioneers of women's football. FYI the quotes in the statement come from Joel Glazer of three-year-old Man United women, Perez of one-year-old Real Madrid women, and Agnelli of four-year-old Juventus. 1/
🚨 New press release on the Super League says that: "As soon as practicable after the start of the men’s competition, a corresponding women’s league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women’s game."

What Arsenal have managed to do despite all the injuries this season, at pretty much every stage of it, has been mind-blowing. That gritty second-half performance was delicious.
Having interviewed this team and seen the work behind the scenes that went into the evacuations of female football players in 2021, I can tell you this is bollocks. Also, if it were true, would you begrudge any woman trying to escape the Taliban and its anti-women regime?!
Can’t quite compute this. Awful awful news. Thinking of Beardy’s family and friends. He was fantastic to interact with as a journalist: passionate, honest, wore his heart on his sleeve, adored his family and was a damn good manager with an incredible eye for an unknown signing.
Liverpool Football Club is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of former LFC Women manager Matt Beard.
The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this devastating time.
My friend’s 10-year-old son has single-handedly set up a girls cricket team at their school to help encourage more girls into sport. They’ve made their own sign up sheet, liaised with the school council and secured staff & facilities. My heart is so full 😍😍😍😍
This is a) the most ridiculous award I have ever seen and b) wtaf have any of those nominated done for women’s football? Answers on a postage stamp because that is all they would fill…
Arsenal midfielder Lia Walti spent about an hour signing EVERY flag, shirt, shoe, phone case and taking every selfie asked for. What a wonderful way to thank a record crowd for the🇨🇭national team and what a great send off the for team.
This is how you use your voice and the sport for good. This is real, long-lasting, meaningful change. The challenge now will be the make sure it’s followed through and built on for years and years to come. 3/
Northern Ireland manager Kenny Shiel’s actually just said in the post match pressure that the second goal in women’s football games comes very soon after the first because women react too emotionally to conceding… 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Remember when Katherine Ryan, without names for fear of legal repercussions, would talk about a comedian being widely known for being a predator and sleaze within the industry? And, that women comedians would warn women coming into the industry about them? 👋 football journalism.
“Millie [Bright] spoke to me [a while ago] & said: ‘My niece is desperate to get your shirt, where can I get it?’ I was like: ‘You can’t, it doesn’t exist.’ That is a huge problem and it is a scary message that is being sent to goalkeepers worldwide, that you are not important.”
Gutted for Lia Walti, but ABJ should NOT be getting abuse and should not feel like she has to write and release a statement like this. She's a human being for christ's sake, leave her alone.
...football has overwhelmingly been a bastion of inclusion and solidarity and that is something the sport holds very dear. As I said in a piece not long ago, the starting point in this conversation should be about how we make sure everyone is able to benefit from sport. 2/

Incredible. @UWCL to be shown live for free around the world on YouTube for four years after Dazn win broadcast rights.👇 theguardian.com/football/202…
This is disgusting. A 26 year international career spanning 7 World Cups and 7 Olympics, a mum who’s scared of flying getting on a plane to watch her daughter play for the first time in her final game, and this is the treatment. Poor. Really poor.
Looking through Arsenal women’s full accounts up to May 2023 which have been filed recently. Some interesting things on the Emirates effect, all before the impact of more games and the sell out crowds at the end of last season and start of this season shows. 1/
If Emma Hayes gets asked one more time whether she wants to manage in the men’s game I… I don’t even know. It’s not an invalid question at all, but my god has she answered it time and time again recently and it feels very disrespectful pre-and-post big big Chelsea games.
So… you can pre-order my book if you want 😳. Publication date is 16th June. I’d describe it as a sort of social/political history of the women’s game, with a look to the future too. Links to Waterstones/Foyles/Amazon here. linktr.ee/awomansgame
Can you imagine being the 23-year-old @_jessiefleming being handed the ball by all-time international record goal-scorer Christine Sinclair to take a penalty against the world champions, a team Canada hasn't beaten in 20 years, with a place in an Olympic final on the line? 🤯
Some seem to have taken this seriously. So I’m going to explain the joke: pretty much every mention of LJ refers to her as RJ’s sister. I was trying to say that after her performance the other night and arrival on the world stage that maybe it time he was known as LJ’s brother.
Important sock update, some Arsenal players have taped over the Chelsea blue too, some haven't. Williamson, Blackstenius, Mead, McCabe and Wubben-Moy all taped black.
I'm an Arsenal fan but it's very very hard not to enjoy watching Barca no matter who they are playing. I was there to see them lose 4-1 to Lyon in the UWCL final in 2019 and how the team learned from that and rebuilt off the back of it has been quite wonderful to watch.
On the way to Wembley my husband asked my 9-year-old if he wanted a souvenir scarf or t-shirt or something to remember being there. He was like "Nah, I'm OK". Then on the way out he said quietly "Actually, I think I'd like something to remind me that I was here."
Important to remember that this is the record attendance for *a Fifa sanctioned match*. It’s huge, nothing should be taken away from it, but let’s not be disrespectful to the 110,000 attendance at the final of the 1971 unofficial World Cup in Mexico. Respect history ✊

Important and brave piece this by Eve: I was sexually assaulted on a train after Spurs v Brentford while a dad and his sons laughed theguardian.com/football/202…
A few takeaways…
a) players play a lot of football, but either they don’t watch a lot of football or their pitch view of players completely differently to everyone else’s
b) six play in the WSL, is the increased broadcast accessibility playing a role?
c) Spain/Barca robbed
Eh? This was posted during the game. Arsenal’s losing was their own fault, the pitch isn’t an excuse. But the fact that you, a Real fan, think it’s OK for your women’s team to play on that pitch and isn’t disrespectful is symbolic of the problem.
Céline Haidar, the 19-year-old Lebanon international, was hit by shrapnel following an Israeli airstrike. She’s in an induced coma.
Many are asking @FIFAcom and @UEFAcom to act. They are yet to respond to my request for comment.

Love it. Son just told me that if the boys that play football at break times try and exclude any girls from joining in then boys get banned from using the pitch for a week and the girls get it to themselves.
