An exceptional achievement by Gukesh! Congratulations to him for triumphing over the very best. His first-ever win against Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025 showcases his brilliance and dedication. Wishing him continued success in the journey ahead. @DGukesh

I am so happy for 🇮🇳 Gukesh 🇮🇳! Some have doubted his worthiness as a World Champion, and believed that he was just a lucky winner against an off form Ding Liren. I read a lot of criticism from doubters. In this tournament in Croatia, he started off with a loss against Duda. He was already written off as a bottom feeder by others. Then he won 5 straight, taking down Firouzja with white, Praggnanandhaa with black, Abdusattorov with black, Caruana with white, and Carlsen with black! No matter what will happen tomorrow, beating those 5 consecutively is a feat very few can ever do. I hope this will give him confidence to rise to another level! 💪 @FIDE_chess @GrandChessTour

Carlsen outplayed Gukesh, made massive blunder to lose a winning game! This is the biggest shock of the year! Carlsen rarely loses in classical chess, and he rarely commits big blunders. He was playing so well with the black pieces in round 6 in Norway against Gukesh. He had a winning position with more time on the clock. But Gukesh did not give up. He continued to fight and Carlsen's advantage slowly disappeared. Then when both were in time pressure, he made a huge blunder which cost him the game. This has to be one of the most painful losses in his spectacular career. I am sure he is very angry with himself. #NorwayChess

🇮🇳 Gukesh 🇮🇳 is a DESERVING World Classical Champion, period! He went through the FIDE Candidates as an 18 year old, the youngest in the tournament, and came out ahead of big stars Caruana, Nakamura, Nepo, Firouzja, and Pragg, etc. It was not his fault that Magnus Carlsen walked away from his title. If we, as a chess community, delegitimize his title because he did not beat Carlsen, then we need to do the same for World Champions after Bobby Fischer since he also walked away from his title! We can not have different standards for players we like or dislike. Someone just recently asked me about this and this is my opinion. @FIDE_chess

It really makes me sick and disgusted 🤬 reading some of the (racist and sexist, etc.) online comments from mostly guys about this young and sweet 9 year old chess star, Bodhana Sivanandan. Instead of celebrating the incredible achievement of making the Olympiad team at age 9, these sickos posted derogatory comments. Three years ago in 2021, with the help from my friend FIDE International Arbiter Shohreh Bayat, I invited Bodhana to a tournament I organized in London. This was when I first met her and her father. I met them several times at various tournaments since. Both are very nice and they asked a lot of questions about how to help Bodhana improve. She is an amazing talent and I hope she will go very far in chess. It is sad that even in 2024, a young girl with a simple dream of becoming great in a field she loves, has to face so much abuse and insults. Unfortunately, she is not the only girl who has to deal with this. Many have to endure it. We need to do everything we can to protect these young girls. @FIDE_chess @ECUonline @ecfchess @WOMChess The photo with Bodhana in the mask was taken during the London tournament (during Covid time) that I organized.

🇮🇳 Gukesh 🇮🇳 convincingly wins SuperUnited Rapid in Croatia! After losing the first game against Duda, he scored 6 wins and 2 draws in the final 8 games (approximately 2950 performance overall) to outdistance the rest of the field! Very impressive for a "bottom feeder"! 👏 I guess he will not be underestimated again! 😁 Congratulations! 🎉 @FIDE_chess @GrandChessTour

The World Champion showed the true meaning of "Win with Grace"! He has the heart of a warrior! Knowing that he was in big trouble both on the board and on the clock, he fought as hard as he could to survive, and was rewarded with a big victory! 👏
Gukesh: "99 out of 100 times I would lose. Just a lucky day!" "First classical win against Magnus, I mean, not the way I wanted it to be, but okay I'll take it." #NorwayChess

Here is another photo I had with Daniel back in 2011. He presented me with his excellent chess book as a token of appreciation when I invited him to the SPICE Cup to go for his GM norm. He also gave me a signed copy of Chess Life with him on the cover after winning the World Youth. I knew him, his late Father, and his Mom for many years. When he stayed at my home, he was hanging out with my children at night, while training hard with my GM students at SPICE during the day. Not sure if many know this but he was also an amazing basketball player. He can knock down 3-pointers all day long. I remember him and Ray Robson playing horse 🏀 and they were both very good! I still can't believe he's gone! I have so many fond memories of him. 😢 RIP Daniel! @USChess @CLTchesscenter @PeterGiannatos

This is my opinion: I have less of an issue with the religious excuse. Others may disagree. BUT, he could have informed the organizers, chief arbiter, and/or his female opponents in advance. This is NOT an Open Swiss event. This is a prestigious invitational when he knew in advance that he would face 4 female opponents. If he wanted an exception then be proactive. Otherwise, he has to expect criticism.

He's always polite, conducts himself professionally, and very receptive to take in new information (a very important trait for a young player). Shortly after he became a grandmaster, I saw something very special in his game, approach to chess, and demeanor. He has the important intangibles rarely seen in young players this age. That's why I said all the way back then that I believe he will go the furthest among the current crop of young and extremely talented Indian prodigies. Some thought I was crazy for saying that. But here we are, a few days before a possible historic moment. Gukesh still has NOT hit his peak chess potential yet. Some small tweaks in a few key areas and he can dominate for years to come. He will have an amazing future, no matter the results of this match! #DingGukesh

Fake moral outrage! Earlier today, I posted about Hikaru Nakamura 7-0 results in the Louisiana State Chess Championship. It is very rare for a world class player to play in small open tournaments, on his own dime. Hikaru did not do this in secrets. He openly tweeted and streamed about the event. There was no rule broken. He was well received by the players. He smiled, posed for photos, and analyzed with them. Very professional! Some people got angry about it when it is none of their business. Hikaru can do whatever he wants with his time. If this is against some rules then it is up to FIDE to do something about it. He broke no rule as far as I know. Looking back to when I was a 2000-2200+ player, what thrill it would have been for me to play against, and then analyze with a world class player, for free. Top players simply cannot win. When they do this, they get chastised. When they don't, they are accused of protecting their ratings! 🤷‍♀️ And by the way, it is expected, but not so easy to beat 2200+ players every game. To say that any joker can beat these players at the Louisiana State Championship is quite insulting to them. 🤦‍♀️ @FIDE_chess Photo published by @USChess

They're the GREATEST of their generations! They all dominated the chess world! They all made a HUGE impact in our sport. But each had different access to information, technology, and knowledge, etc. This makes it nearly impossible, and even unfair, to objectively make proper comparisons. However, all three have something in common. They're all dominant figures and NOT afraid to speak their minds, whether if others agree with them, or not. I am lucky to know all of them, and witnessed their amazing success. I believe it would be more proper to have a personal favorite, and not GOAT. Statement by GM  Zhansaya Abdumalik to @ChessbaseIndia regarding the poor playing conditions and why she withdrew: "I left the tournament because the preparation for the event was not adequate. I arrived at the airport at 1.30 a.m. and they forgot to meet me. I tried to contact the person who was supposed to wait for me. He didn't check his messages for one and a half hour. I did everything they said in our email before we arrived but there was nothing at the airport.  I don't think it was hard to organize transfers for only 12 players when there was a huge Olympiad organized last year for thousands of people. I can't imagine if a top male player was arriving to the tournament and no one is there to pick him up. That was not a good start.  The location of the hotel was not great. FIDE knew that unfortunately Delhi has some problems with the air because of pollution. I could see a big landfill from my window where they were putting on a fire or something of that sort. Leaving the hotel is difficult because of its location. The hotel staff told me not to go out because it could be dangerous. I love India. We had a great Olympiad in Chennai and I have very nice memories from it, but this time something went wrong and I couldn't imagine myself playing there for two weeks. It's one of the best tournaments in the world and I just want FIDE to put more attention on women's chess.  It was too much for me and that's why I decided to leave. We deserve to play in good conditions. Everyone knows that I am a fighter and I would never withdraw from such a tournament without reason." @FIDE_chess #Women #Equality #WomensChess #Professionalism

The historic reaction of an 18 year old World Champion, the youngest in history! @DGukesh overcame all adversity and challenges, and kept on the relentless pressure! Ding eventually self destructed and cracked! So what did we learn from the final game and this match? - Time pressure can be lethal, even in a drawn endgame or harmless position. - It is never over until the players shake hands. So players have to stay alert 100% of the time! - Energy level and alertness have to be at peak level throughout the game, as well as the match. Therefore, physical, mental, and emotional fitness are ALL important! #DingGukesh

Just a reminder: This young man is still only 17!! Here was what I said in an interview with Indian media: “I said long before the recent success of the new crop of talented young Indian players, Gukesh will go the furthest. He has the maturity beyond his years. He has the talent, motivation, fearless mentality, strong nerves, determination, and the X-factor…” @FIDE_chess @aicfchess

The first thing I check everyday during #ChennaiChessOlympiad is how @DGukesh is doing. And he did NOT disappoint! Today he defeated another 2700 to go 6/6! He has the most complete package of talent, mental toughness, winning mentality, strong nerves, and universal style, etc.

My simple and clear solution to deter chess cheating: 1) Delay broadcast by 30 minutes 2) No electronics allowed (currently in place) 3) Spectators first 15-30 minutes only 4) 1st cheating offense = 2-5 year ban 5) 2nd cheating offense = lifetime ban @FIDE_chess @ECUonline

In 2013 during the Anand - Carlsen world championship match in Chennai, super coach @Rameshchess introduced me to a young man (around 13 years old) by the name of Aravindh Chithambaram, one of his students. He told me that this young man has incredible talent. He was rated 2300 but convincingly won a big open tournament with many GMs held alongside with the world championship. Ramesh was right, of course. This young man (@pawnof64square) is now 2718, and just won the Chennai Grandmaster Tournament, ahead of superstars like Aronian, Erigaisi, MVL, and Vidit, etc. Congratulations to both student and coach!

Another unedited excerpt from my upcoming autobiography. This part is about meeting the legendary Tal for the first time. I was still quite shy as a 13-year-old, and the thought of approaching him was too much for me to bear. Sensing this, my mother intervened. She walked over to Tal while he was pacing in the hallway chain-smoking, as he so often did. She introduced herself as my mother, and explained that it was a dream of mine to play him in a blitz game, if he could find the time. His eyes lit up. It would be my pleasure, he said. To our surprise, he quickly offered his opponent a draw, just so he could sit down for a little bit of blitz chess with me. It didn't seem real. Tal was one of the greatest players to ever touch a chess piece. And not only did he know who I was, he would rather play with me than finish a far more consequential game in an official event. This just couldn't be happening. I can only imagine his reasons for sitting down with me. Maybe he was curious about how good I actually was. Or maybe he was just being kind to a young chess student. Probably it was a bit of both. I can still picture the confident way he moved the pieces, evidence of a lifetime spent at the board; the big-eyed facial expressions he'd make when evaluating a position; and his oddly-shaped right hand, which was deformed from birth by a congenital disorder. The whole time he showed me nothing but warmth and kindness, peppering our games with jokes and funny observations. A crowd of people swarmed the table as we blitzed out moves, which made me so nervous I struggled to concentrate. I'm proud to say I did quite well in my first game, sacrificing two pieces, and the game ended by perpetual check. @FIDE_chess @ECUonline @WOMChess

I lost count on how many times in my life I’ve been called ugly, stupid, fat, useless, no brain, no talent, or far worse, by fans, opponents, and even chess politicians, etc. If I let these words bother me then I would not be here today. A champion has to block everything out!

Both Nepo and Ding are amazingly talented players. Nepo may even have another shot at the title in the future because that is how talented he is. In this match, the nerves and will of both players were severely tested. However, to be a champion, one has to have ice in his veins, and not be flustered or distracted, especially at the most critical moments. This is unbelievably important in a championship match. The World Chess Championship (Rapid/Blitz/Armageddon playoff is like the tiebreaks in the 5th set of a Tennis Grand Slam, overtime in the 7th game of the NBA Championship game or Super Bowl, etc. It is not about who is the better player/team. It is all about who wants it more, who can handle the emotions more efficiently, and who can execute the moves more effectively under the most severe pressure. Everyone can see the frustration and pain in Nepo after the playoff. It is heartbreaking. Unfortunately, in a title match, only 1 can be the champion. I hope he can recover and soar again. #WinwithgraceLosewithdignity #NepoDing #WorldChessChampionship @FIDE_chess

Here was me with my beloved chess pieces. So many chess “journalists” got this totally wrong for decades. Since I was the only child (back then), I was bored, and was always looking for something fun to do. One day at age 4, I ACCIDENTALLY discovered some chess pieces in the cabinet in search for new toys in my home. As a little girl, I was so fascinated with their cool shapes. I wanted to know what they were. Since my Mom did NOT play chess at all, she said to wait for my Dad to come home. Even though he was not a serious player, the way he explained it was magical, with Kings, Queens, Castles, etc. I fell in love with chess and its cool looking little figurines immediately. This was the beginning of a 5 decade passion. At that time I also excelled at math. So when given a choice of which path to pursue seriously, I chose chess, and the rest is history. @FIDE_chess @WOMChess @ECUonline @EuropeEchecs

Many years ago (before he became a superstar) when he was not even #1 in China, I invited Ding Liren (through my contacts at the Chinese Chess Federation) to my SPICE Cup tournament at @websteru. This was by far the highest rated round robin tournament in US history up until that time. Unfortunately, he was so sick right from the start and did not play his best. In spite of that, he fought hard every game and finished second behind MVL, and ahead of my students (GMs Le Quang Liem and Wesley So, etc.) and other strong GMs. After the tournament, he came up to me (with very little English) and apologized for finishing only second. He promised that he will improve his chess so he does not embarrass himself, his family and country. After that, he asked my husband to take him go shopping at a nice upscale store because he wanted to buy gifts for all his friends back in China as this was his first time in the US. He was always a nice, polite, thoughtful, and caring person. I also have only high praise for Gukesh in my interaction with him. #DingGukesh
