Stratos Vs Filecoin 1) Data Integrity and Resiliency With Filecoin, there is no guarantee of SLAs. A cloud SLA (cloud service-level agreement) is like a deal between a cloud service provider and a customer to make sure there's a certain level of service. So, there is no guarantee that your important data will be there when you need to get them back. According to the Filecoin FAQ section: "To avoid problems, it's important to store your data with different storage providers." To get around the issue of data integrity, Filecoin users have to decide how many copies of their data they want to keep to hopefully make sure they do not lose important files. Stratos meta nodes take care of sorting and maintaining data to guarantee Data Resiliency. By default, all files on Stratos have at least 5 copies. This makes sure that all data is safe and can be retrieved when needed. If a storage resource node goes offline, the Meta nodes start copying the data stored on that offline storage node to other nodes (by replicating one of the four remaining copies). This guarantees that all data remains available and safe. 2) Encryption Filecoin stores files on IPFS, but the files are not automatically encrypted. Users have to make sure their files are encrypted before uploading them using Filecoin to keep their data private and safe. Stratos keeps data safe by splitting and encrypting files. All the data gets split up (30mb slices for general data; 10mb slices for video data) and then stored on different nodes. Only the owner of the data who has the private keys can unlock and read the files. 3) Ability to "Game the System" - Filecoin's Proof of Storage consensus vs Stratos' Proof of Traffic consensus Filecoin's "Proof of Storage" consensus allows miners to "game the system" by uploading useless data just to earn the $FIL rewards. The reason this can happen is that Filecoin miners can choose which files they want to store. So they can upload files and get the rewards in $FIL (as long as it is worth it after they pay the fees to store the files). Stratos miners (storage resource nodes) cannot make money in the same way as the above by making traffic on their own. Because the Meta nodes (powered by a Proof of Authority consensus) control how and where file segments are stored. Stratos miners do not know beforehand who will get which traffic or which nodes will hold the data. Even if Stratos miners try to make more traffic (by uploading files) to earn more $STOS, they will just make other miners profitable, not themselves. 🔥Stratos' "Proof of Traffic" (PoT) consensus is much more sustainable. PoT consensus incentivizes miners (storage resource nodes) to offer more powerful nodes instead of trying to break the network. Stratos’ Proof of Traffic consensus also has the added benefit that it allows revenue sharing models between content creators and the Stratos storage node network. More on that soon…

Stratos will no doubt be a dominant player within the decentralized storage industry. Let's get a bit technical and dive into the data download mechanism of Stratos Decentralized Storage (SDS) 🔎📂The client sends the requested file path to the index service. The index service obtains the meta information of the file (mainly the file slice location information) and returns it to the client. The client connects to the corresponding resource node according to the meta and obtains the file slice one by one, then append and merge data on the client side to have the entire file. 1⃣ The client initializes an RPC call to the index service for requesting to get file data. 2⃣The index service verifies whether the file exists. If the file does, it obtains the file metadata which include the slice ID and the corresponding resource node list. 3⃣ After the client receives the meta-data, it selects the closest resource node and requests to retrieve each slice in turn. The client verifies if the slice is damaged or not, if the slice is damaged, the client will select a different resource node to request again. 4⃣The client talks to the resource node and transfers data via socket connection. The client caches the received data locally then writes it to the file. Transferring process will keep running until the all the slices are received in the client side and the entire file is merged successfully. $STOS #WEB3 #DecentralizedStorage
