Just a friendly reminder that "Edgar: An Autobiography" is out June 11 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Hmm, Father's Day is coming....

Not surprised that the Seahawks, by numerous accounts, will host the Broncos on MNF in Week One. The NFL simply couldn't ignore the spectacle and hype of Drew Lock facing his old team.
Going from 10 games under .500 on June 19 to nine games over .500 on July 17 -- a span of 28 days -- is one of the most astounding team feats I've ever witnessed in 30-plus years of covering MLB.
Since 1996, I’ve covered hundreds upon hundreds of Mariners games for the Seattle Times at the Kingdome, Safeco Field and T-Mobile Park – not to mention scores more on the road at more than 25 ballparks, not to mention 27 years of spring training games around the Cactus League.
I don't feel any joy about this. Scott Servais is a good man, and a good manager. On the blame scale for Mariners' season, I put him well down the list. But the manager always takes the fall.
Penn State coach James Franklin's wife went to Washington State. When the Fiesta Bowl matchup with Washington was announced, "She made it clear: Win this game or me and the kids are gone."
Voters from the Pacific time zone voted for Raleigh, 5-1. Voters from the Eastern time zone split, 7-7. But voters from the Central time zone went 9-1 for Judge.
It wasn’t the East Coast bias that did him in. It was the Midwest and Texas.
Personal news: I had originally planned to keep this under wraps a while longer, but word is starting to leak out, and now a job opening for Seattle Times sports columnist has been posted, leading to a lot of (valid) questions. So here it is: I’ll be retiring in November. (more)
I think people forget how close the Seahawks came to moving to Southern California in 1996. Ken Behring announced in February they were moving. The team set up offices in Anaheim. Paul Allen was the only hope for saving the Seahawks for Seattle. And he did.
I expect some backlash, but Dave Roberts has built an ironclad HOF case: 8 division titles, 4 pennants, 2 WS crowns, and the highest winning % of all time (.627)
So this is something. Driving into T-Mobile, I passed a large group of Tigers players strolling up 1st Avenue in full uniform. I had to investigate. I caught up with them around Krispy Kreme — with none other than Miguel Cabrera trailing the pack. A rookie ritual, I suspect.
The #Mariners have won consecutive series against the defending World Series champion, the defending NL champion, and the team with the best record in baseball.
My dad, Isaac Rudyard “Rud” Stone, died early this morning just barely a month after a great celebration of his 100th birthday. He was in such good health it seemed he might live forever, but his body finally gave out. Dad was a great man who loved his family above all else.
I had to triple-check this, but: Since falling 10 games under .500 at 29-39 on June 19, the Mariners are 47-19 over their next 66 games -- a .712 winning percentage over a span of 2 1/2 months. That % maintained over an entire season would result in between 115 and 116 wins.
After tonight's win, FanGraphs gives the #Mariners a 96.2 percent chance of making the playoffs.
Wary M's fans: "So you're saying there's a 3.8 percent chance they can blow it."
If #Mariners win this one, it will be regarded (by their fans) as an all-time classic. If they lose, it will be the most frustrating game in club history. No middle ground.
Some personal news, as the kids say: I'm working with Edgar Martinez on his autobiography, which will be published in June by @TriumphBooks. Really excited about this. Edgar has a compelling life story to tell and I'm honored to help him do so. #Mariners
The Mariners and Blue Jays came into MLB together as expansion partners in 1977. One will be going to the World Series — perhaps to play the former Seattle Pilots
Dan O'Dowd's analysis of Mariners first-round draft pick Cole Young on MLB Network is that "he's a baseball player," which has to be a huge relief to their scouting staff.
An absolute masterpiece by Luis Castillo. Jerry Dipoto acquired him from the Reds, at considerable cost in prospects, precisely with this type of October performance in mind.
Not that anyone cares, but College World Series has long been on my sportswriting bucket list. It took 39 years, but I'm booked and heading to Omaha to cover @UW_Baseball
I feel terrible for Lou Piniella, passed over for the Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Baseball Era committee for the second time. And once again, he fell one vote short. Lou is a Hall of Famer. I hope he gets in one day. I know he’s devastated.
New column on the legacy of John Clayton:
Known for outworking everyone, John Clayton loved every aspect of his job covering Seahawks and NFL | The Seattle Times seattletimes.com/sports/seah…
My section in center field was chanting “Eight more runs!” after Cal’s homer. When Barger homered in the ninth, they immediately began chanting “Nine more runs!”
This trade only makes sense for the #Mariners as a precursor to bigger moves down the line this offseason. Otherwise, it's hard to see it as anything but a salary dump.
It was one of the great honors and privileges of my career to be in the room with Edgar Martinez and his family in New York when the Hall of Fame call came. So emotional. So well deserved. Much more to come.
The Mariners have made it incumbent upon Jerry Dipoto to bolster the roster for a serious and legitimate playoff push. And that obviously starts with a capable starting pitcher.
Let's do some inventory after 2-1 #Mariners win tonight:
15-3 since June 19
10-2 since Angels brawl
10-1 since Carlos Santana arrived
8-1 since they started serving suspensions for Angels brawl
7 straight wins
In a decade covering Pete Carroll, I found him to be one of the most engaging, cooperative and fascinating people I’ve ever been around in a long career as a sportswriter. He went out today with grace while revealing the humanity that endeared him to players.
Geno and his daughters on the podium during the 2022 Wild Card Series after a win over Toronto, and again tonight, 3 years later, after another win over Toronto
Just thinking, as I head home, Cal’s home run might rank as the second-greatest single moment in #Mariners history, behind Edgar’s double but ahead of Luis Sojo “everybody scores.”
Edgar Martinez took up baseball when he fell under the thrall of his Puerto Rican countryman Roberto Clemente in the 1971 World Series. Clemente died on a humanitarian mission 46 years ago today -- and on the final day of voting, Edgar stands poised to join him in Cooperstown.
In winning their 14th consecutive game, the #Mariners also cut their deficit to Houston in the AL West to single digits -- 9 games. I believe this is the point in 1995 when Jay Buhner said, "Forget the bleeping wild card, we're winning the division."
Today is the final one. I just wanted to thank all of the readers, who have provided tremendous feedback over the years, as well as my colleagues, too numerous to mention right now*, who have made coming to the ballpark so much fun. (more)
Firing the offensive coordinator didn’t solve the Mariners hitting problems. Getting 2 new bats at the deadline didn’t solve them. Activating Julio didn’t solve them. I think we can safely say this is just who they are.
Mariners say they are getting a ticket surge and as of 1 p.m., have sold at or near 30,000 tickets for each of the three weekend games with the Angels. Capacity at T-Mobile Park is 47,000.
Remember when the #Mariners lost 4 out of 5 to the Angels to fall 10 games under .500? The season seemed doomed. They’ve gone 13-3 since then to get back to .500 for the first time since they were 12-12 on May 3
Cal Raleigh challenged #Mariners front office to add talent in the offseason: "We've got to commit to winning. We have to commit to going and getting those players you see other teams going out, going for it, getting big-time pitchers, getting big-time hitters. (more)
WSU band is playing "Bow Down to Washington," which they learned today. A great display of sportsmanship. UW band unable to make trip after bus accident yesterday.
It was shocking to me that Mather, when asked an open-ended question about Julio Rodriguez, talks first about his big personality and then says, "He is loud, his English is not tremendous." That's the first thing that comes to mind? And it is ABSOLUTELY not true. (more)
The #Mariners have the second-highest average with the bases loaded in MLB (.358). So why does it feel like they blow a bases-loaded, no-out situation just about every other day?
A horrible, brutal, inexcusable loss for #Mariners. You've just got to find a way to score with bases loaded and no outs in the 10th and the heart of the order at the plate. Recency bias, perhaps, but worst loss of year.
Dylan Moore should be remembered fondly by Mariners fans for years of positive contributions. But he really left the ballclub no choice after his inexplicable offensive collapse this year.
At this point, there's really no justification for playing Jesse Winker. He's hitting .104 (5-for-48) over his last 16 games, and is a liability in left field.
Kind of fitting that the decisive loss was a one-run game in which Mariners couldn’t get a run home from third with one out three different times. So many similar defeats this year.
I started work at the Seattle Times 25 years ago today -- hired to be the Seahawks beat writer. And I'm celebrating by writing a hockey column. It has been a great quarter-century.
It's hard to imagine Cal Raleigh won't be voted the AL All-Star starter at catcher. But beyond that, he has to be the odds-on choice to be the catcher for Team USA in next spring's World Baseball Classic. The #Mariners have never had a position player on Team USA in the WBC.
I never got a chance to use my 1997 World Series tickets at the Kingdome. I gave a feeling they would be a lot more than $75 if they get there this year
Hard to believe, but the #Mariners have become a Top 10 offense. Here's where they rank in MLB:
Runs: 8th (131)
Slugging: 6th (.407)
OBP: 6th (.334)
OPS: 7th (.741)
Home runs: 3rd (40)
Walks: 1st (120)
Stolen bases: 3rd (35)
Even if the #Mariners by some miracle make the World Series, it’s hard to imagine they’ll have a harder-fought series than the 110-loss-bound Royals just gave them
Julio Rodriguez is the first #Mariners player in the HR Derby since Bret Boone in 2003. Hopefully, he'll do better than Boonie, who finished with 0 homers.
Last year, the Mariners lost a 10-game lead over the Astros in 24 games, spanning 31 days (June 18 to July 19).
Turnabout: This year, the Astros lost a 7-game lead over the M’s in 27 games, spanning 33 days (July 10 to August 12)
