Knicks writer and NBA columnist for @newsdaysports. I've done this for a long time at a lot of papers. Opinions my own, not usually ones anyone else would claim
Derrick Rose on the MSG crowd and Trae Young: "The league has gotten so soft ... The crowd is supposed to do that. his reaction is supposed to be that way. I mean, that's what I'm used to. ... You want to talk shit, talk shit. It's alright, but next game it's going to be tougher"
Embiid in the starting lineup -- somehow overcoming all injuries he received from the blow to his elbow that Brunson delivered with his face, foot injured stomping on Hart, knee from Hartenstein's groin and wrist from yanking down Robinson.
Josh Hart had a hidden motivation tonight: "it was so important because I didn’t want to see Orlando Magic put us on Tik Tok their song with some cows dancing, which Is a banger. .... Whoever made that song is really going places."
I'll give it to Knicks fans -- with the Mets and Yankees in the playoffs tonight, the Garden is somehow still filled up like it's a playoff game for a preseason game against the Wizards.
Hezonja on stepping over Antetokounmpo: Honestly, if you’re afraid, this is not for you. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but if you feel fear this is not the place for you, New York is not a place for you and this team is not a place for you.
Josh Hart on his friendship with fellow 'Nova alum, Kyle Lowry: "it’s definitely dope to have a big brother like that who’s a champion, who’s had a very successful career. So it’s dope. Right now, until one of us moves on, it’s fuck him."
As DiVicenzo was starting interviews with NY media Joe Ingles shouted "Donte, tell them you requested a trade, you didn’t want to f**king be there anymore, you were sick of that team, all the reports are true." Donte said when he saw Ingles was in Minny he asked to go back to NY.
DiVincenzo was asked if he could hit a game-winning three who would he want to do it in front of -- Brunson, Hart or Bridges -- and he replied laughing, "I would prefer to do it in front of Thibs. That’s my answer."
DiVincenzo on Brunson: I asked him if he was okay. And he said he’ll be fine. And that’s everything to me. ... I don’t worry about Jalen. He’s one of the toughest guys in the league. ... Whatever it is he’s going to bounce back. He’s tough as nails."
So now Knicks lineup - as long as Kemba is healthy - Kemba Walker, Evan Fournier, RJ Barrett, Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson with D-Rose, Burks, Noel, Quickley, Toppin, Grimes, McBride, Taj, Vildoza and Knox.
Randle could have waited a year and cashed in more, a league source close to the situation said Julius Randle's decision came down to two things: love for the city, situation in NY and what he's become, and then to provide financial flexibility for Knicks to build around him.
Hearing that yes, Knicks are still talking with Detroit about the Ivey selection - a deal could be made if Duren is available at 11 and they do a package with that pick.
Josh Hart on Jalen Brunson popularity:"He’s the king of New York. I’m the Duke of Manhattan. Mikal’s going to be a Duke of the Bronx. OG can be the Duke of Queens. (I threw a ball out in Bronx) but we got to put ‘Kel there. We can’t put him in Brooklyn. We stole him from there."
This probably won't appease Knicks fans tonight, but Chris Paul had high praise for the Knicks afterward: "That team right there, they play the right way. They play with the right energy. They make every game feel like a playoff game. They don't take any possessions off."
Not for nothing but there was less contact on the final shot than on every uncalled foul in the first 47:59 — including by Harris under the basket to get the ball to THJ.
Julius Randle said that the officials told him after the game that they made a mistake on the call at the line - his sixth foul. Said he should have gone to the line for 2 and a tech - which could have tied the game.
Asked Mitchell Robinson about coming up limping in the fourth quarter - “Kind of landed a little funny, but I’m straight. I ain’t no bitch.” And he did play on through overtime with Hartenstein fouled out.
Not hearing it's done but sounds like Knicks have set their sights on Jordan Clarkson once he clears waivers -- an unexpected find for them at a low cost after he was bought out by Jazz earlier in the day.
Asked Derrick Rose if being here in Chicago for Joakim Noah Night makes him think about nights like these coming for him someday. "No, I try to remove myself from that. I'm going to try to Tom Brady this thing."
Derrick Rose with a deep take on the possibility of making the Hall of Fame. He said he'd love it, but added, "Can someone in here name a famous gladiator? I’m saying it in a way that like in 200-300 years, nobody is going to care about what went on."
What the Knicks are telling you with this pick haul is that they think they are going to be very good and those picks aren't worth more than another standout piece.
The Knicks are sending four unprotected picks (2025, 2027, 2029, 2031) a 2025 protected Milwaukee first, a 2028 unprotected pick swap and a 2025 second-round pick for Mikal Bridges and a 2026 second-round pick, sources tell ESPN.
As Knicks coaches remain in place, so do the centers. Hearing Knicks not very active in Andre Drummond pursuit. They like their three defensive-minded centers and want to see what Mitchell Robinson does with the starting role again.
A few Knicks items about 24 hours from deadline - hearing Morris will be moved and that they are still in on D'Angelo Russell. And...two weeks after being announced as rebranding arm of Knicks, Steve Stoute is a prominent voice in all of this, including finding new front office.
Knicks Jalen Brunson scores 39, but Knicks have no answer for Embiid in Game 3 loss to 76ers and no explanation for flagrant physicality
Jalen Brunson returned to form but the Sixers cut the Knicks' lead to 2-1 thanks to 50 points from their big man. newsday.com/sports/basketbal…
Discussion in the Knicks locker room afterward -- Josh Hart lobbying for his favorite nicknames for defensive pairing of OG and Bridges: And I never thought at this phase of my career I'd have to googling old spongebob episodes.
With both the Nets and Knicks in line for a playoff spot - Governor Cuomo today said that indoor capacity would increase before playoffs to 25 percent from current 10 percent.
Hearing that the Derrick Rose deal may not hamstring the Knicks the way it's been talked about - think he's fitting into an early bird slot, so Knicks could have at least $9 million - which could escalate easily to $12 million.
Very hard to argue with anything Thibs has done this season - but Payton looks completely lost right now on both ends. Rose already has been playing the big minutes, but those minutes that Elfrid gets might be better served by Burks or Ntilikina.
Josh Hart said lots of things, but asked if RJ Barrett seemed extra pumped for this, said, "Nah, because he’s been hooping. If he was out there averaging like 15, 16 and he erupted for 30, maybe a little bit. He’s playing at an All-Star level. I don’t think it was anything added.
Aaron Nesmith should be commended for how hard he's defending but I think he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not get called for a foul.
Talked to Evan Fournier about being out of the rotation: "I always try to put myself in other people’s shoes. Thibs is trying to find a solution. I don’t think he made that decision because he don’t like me or anything like it’s a personal thing. He just wants to win, man."
Asked Fizdale if he would start Frank Ntilikina again tomorrow night vs. Sacramento and De'Aaron Fox: "Absolutely. Frank is really playing good basketball for us. Just really proud of the way that he stayed with it and his confidence in growing every day."
Is it too soon to say that the Knicks did the right thing here not caving in for Donovan Mitchell? Hard to pass on a star on the market - particularly a high-scoring one from NY - but if it was going to cost Barrett and Ainge demanding a bucket of picks, too high a price.
As we wait for this media day to start...I'm picturing Knicks executives telling Josh Hart right now that he can't speak about the trade being officially completed and he's just repeatedly making cat noises at them.
BTW, if Philadelphia fans want to invade MSG for Game 5 -- and I don't think they do -- break into the 401K. Right now the cheapest get-in price on stubhub for 2 tickets is $483 each with fees included.
Derrick Rose on getting over this loss: "It's tough, extremely tough. By the end of the night, tomorrow when you wake up you've got to have amnesia. But it's fucking hard right now. I can't even lie."
Julius on @RjBarrett6 “RJ, I came to this organization with him. He was drafted, I signed as a free agent. He’s like a little brother to me. We’ve been through all the ups and downs year after year together and had a lot of battles, went through a lot of battles together.”
Knicks go big — send Barrett, IQ and pick to Raptors, obtain Anunoby
OG Anunoby is a player long coveted by the Knicks' front office. newsday.com/sports/basketbal…
Didn't fit this in last night - but after Josh Hart joked about Isaiah Hartenstein's loose ball dive despite lack of athleticism, speed and quickness, Hartenstein response: "Man, he’s been taking days off, kicking people in the face."
Can confirm Knicks sign Sixers Guershon Yabusele to a two-year, $12 million deal. He played well for the Sixers last season. The deal utilizes knicks midlevel exception -- which triggers second apron. Vet minimums left to fill out roster. Have to wonder if another move coming.
