Today is Dwarfism Awareness Day! Brody was born with a rare form of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia. It affects 1 in every 500,000 kids and mom and I are genetic carriers of the gene. Holly likely is too even though we are all average height.
It commonly comes with club feet, scoliosis, cleft palate, cervical kyphosis, hearing loss, and breathing issues since it affects cartilage. It does not affect Brody (or anyone else with it) cognitively. Brody got all of the main characteristics except for breathing issues and has had 7 surgeries to assist him with any complications from his condition.

That's why one is elite and the other will never be more than a backup. Had 3 weeks to prove you were the dude with one of the best WR tandems in the league and you come out sassy at the world because you got benched for Flacco.

Rejoicing! Surgery was a success. A perfect success. I’m so happy. We’ve been dreading this for a while as there is a risk of paralysis any time you’re dealing with the spine, especially in a kid as complicated as Brody. Check out the before and after pics. Incredible!!!

Instead of that joke, let’s make the real story go viral. Before Avery Johnson ever put on a Kansas State uniform he heard Brody‘s story and saw that he had a relationship with the K-State staff and players. Brody had just had surgery on his legs, and Avery asked if he could come over and meet Brody and see if he could lift his spirits.
Avery and his family showed up to our house with a couple of Transformers toys for Brody knowing that they were his favorite. He also showed up with a mermaid toy for my daughter. They invited us to a game at Maize his senior season where we were welcomed onto the sidelines, and he took the time to come over and make Brody feel special even in the middle of a game.
Since then, Avery always makes a point to come see Brody when we make it up to a practice or event. Avery is different from your average college football player in all the best ways. Sure, he’s an incredible football player. But he’s a better person.
You want to use my son to make a joke, that says more about you than it does about him. Especially as an anonymous internet troll. But I hope you eventually learn a lesson in something that Brody has, that Avery has, and that you lack, and that is character.

Just spoke with Brody’s surgeon. The surgery went great! Brody did great! Rod replacement went perfectly and Brody’s neuromonitoring was perfect through the procedure!
B asked for dad to spend the night with him tonight in the hospital so hopefully we get some sleep and if not I’ll rest up tomorrow while mama takes over.
