I am quite wealthy now. 🙂 I started buying in early 2013, and remember even buying some coins in the $60s that summer. And indeed I sold all of it, in *early* 2017 for a ~20x cumulative return. Those returns allowed my wife and I to fully pay off our mortgage, which paved the way for me to retire from a stressful job investigating crimes against children to be a stay at home dad with our three kids. People from average means like me aren't usually mentally equipped for the multiples that an "early" investment like bitcoin could provide, but the time with my children has been *invaluable*, and my weak hands moment also ultimately facilitated the creation of this FOSS project that has helped a lot of people get more comfortable with storing their bitcoin for the long term. I am indeed quite wealthy, despite my 2017 lettuce hands. 🙂
If you are an "OG", invested in BTC in 2013, but aren't quite wealthy right now, there is only one conclusion.

Back from Nashville, and after a little reflection, I need to reiterate a message I frequently put out there: kill your heroes. Most of the people talking about the moon, laser eyes, power law, get on zero, digital energy, strategic national reserve, etc. etc., or who are telling you to buy this device or use that service are **buying and selling your attention to make themselves richer** -- they generally do not have your best interests at heart. Think for yourself and don't fall for marketing. Educate yourself about bitcoin, discuss it with people you respect, think critically about the risks, and then, if it makes sense to you, make a sensible investment in it with reasonable expectations, while keeping your larger financial situation and your personal priorities in perspective. I am a believer in bitcoin in spite of, not because of, all of the wild assertions, influencers and aggressive social marketing out there, and it has taken me 11 years to get to where I am. Be careful our there anon, don't buy the hype.

The fact that this tweet was followed by accusations that I'd agreed to become a Blockstream shill or that or some other arrangement was behind it says some sad things about how the larger bitcoin ecosystem operates, or at the very least about how many people suspect it does. I've never met Samson in person & can count on one hand the number of DMs we've exchanged; this unprompted tweet came as a total surprise to me, and was a very pleasant one at that. Not a lot of people with large accounts tweet about the project because we don't offer a referral program, don't buy podcast ads, don't sponsor conferences, don't host happy hours, and don't appoint influencer "advisors" -- SeedSigner is just a useful tool, built collaboratively by a small community of volunteers and provided for free, and one that can be very useful to individual bitcoiners all over the world. Some people, like Samson, see the value in what we're doing and are willing to help spread the word, and I immensely appreciate that. Gatekeeping by for-profit corporations, while not entirely pervasive, is a real thing in the bitcoin ecosystem, so I will take all of the help I can get.
Follow @SeedSigner. It’s one of the most important projects in the #Bitcoin space. It doesn’t get nearly enough attention and funding as it should.

My sister has solar panels and was telling me how frustrated she was that credit for energy they contribute back to the grid did not carry over month-to-month. It piqued her interest when I told her that she could theoretically get paid in bitcoin for that extra energy instead of giving it back to the electric company for nothing. A mining rig that could integrate into her power setup and turn on when their panels are generating excess power seems like a product that would appeal to a lot of people out there in similar situations.

Our project is unarguably making an impact in the bitcoin cold storage space and it has been interesting to observe how different corporate players have reacted / interfaced with what we're doing. In no particular order, here are some of my observations / impressions: . Blockstream: recognize stateless & QR exchange workflows as compelling; incorporate several SeedSigner features into Jade; offer our project a small grant . Ledger: Too big, and too busy shitcoining, to notice . Coinkite: Aggressively criticize SeedSigner/airgapped computers as dangerous; quietly incorporate core features into current and upcoming products (MK-series: "ephemeral" mode, Q1: QR exchange, SeedQR, "ephemeral" mode) . Trezor: Not engaged, doubling down on statefulness and implementing an SE . ShiftCrypto: Claim air-gapping is security theatre; also claim statelessness as a current feature

I frequently reference being a stay-at-home dad for multiple reasons. One reason is to acknowledge that this is a gift that bitcoin has given to me -- the appreciation from my early bitcoin savings allowed my wife and I to escape what would have been a lifetime of debt, and paved the way for me to leave my career to be more present with our children & experience more of their young lives. This has been a blessing for myself, and my family, whose value I cannot overstate. A second reason is to highlight that fiat money has stolen this same experience from millions of other families. It's one of those "WTF happened in '71" things -- a definite consequence of our fiat economies is that many, many families are forced into a financial situation where both parents have to work to make ends meet. This is detrimental to our society for obvious reasons. Another reason is to emphasize that we all can find ways to contribute to bitcoin -- you don't have to be working for a startup, podcasting, or helping to drive bitcoin adoption in developing economies to push this movement forward (not that there's anything wrong with those roles either!). Even those of us living out relatively mundane lives can find ways to leverage our talents to meaningfully move the ball forward. A final reason is as a plea for patience; I can sometimes be slow to respond to emails. fall behind on some tasks, or have to decline some invitations. Family really does come first, and thankfully my work with SeedSigner and with cold storage more broadly is able to fit into the remaining parts of my life. 🙂 So that's why it's typically mentioned in my bio!

Once one of the major HWW manufacturers implements definitive personal ID verification & balance tracking into a purchase/onboarding/custody flow (likely in response to a given jurisdiction requiring asset registration) it will put tremendous pressure on other cold storage market participants to do the same so as not to cede market share in a given locale. In response to the availability of these tools, other jurisdictions will in turn put their own digital asset registration rules into place -- realistically the dominos for this sort of thing could come down very quickly. We got a preview of this with ShiftCrypto's implementation and advocacy for AOPP (address ownership proof protocol) when Trezor made a move to implement the same toolset. Thankfully social pressure from maxis was able to limit market penetration of AOPP, but it is only a matter of time before similar initiatives surface and governments attempt to leverage HWW industry capture to take another shot at widespread digital asset registration. Other factors to consider with the HWW makers is that they are for-profit ventures with a need to cover costs and, in many cases, return profits to external investors. They have employees, advertising commitments, supply contracts, leases and other practical reasons to prioritze survival & profitability over cypherpunk principles. Manufacturer businesses may also be domiciled in hostile jurisdictions where legal pressure can be applied. Time will tell whether this call is correct, but in the meantime it's extremely important that convenient, private & permissionless DIY cold storage tools like Specter-DIY, SeedSigner, Krux and other projects be supported so these tools can be freely and easily available wherever the hardware to build them can be acquired.
