The Medal of Honor is our nation’s highest award for valor. Today, we honor two legendary Marines who defined heroism: Col. John Ripley and Maj. James Capers Jr. It was my honor to sign their citations.
If you don’t know their stories, read their citations. When the situation demanded it, they rose to the challenge to accomplish their missions with bravery and strength rarely seen.
As of June 18, 2026, it is now formal Department of the Navy policy that all Sailors and Marines, regardless of rank, will render a hand salute to all Medal of Honor recipients. Our heroes, like Col. Ripley and Maj. Capers, deserve no less. Semper Fi.
