Frank Miller and I have always loved telling the story how no one was allowed to improvise any dialogue on Sin City. (We wanted to have the movie be incredibly faithful to his graphic novel.) But we bent that rule every day Michael Madsen worked with us. Being a fantastic writer, he just kept bringing us one golden additional line after another, and he would make us laugh so much we’d relent and say to each other, “Well if we’re going to break the rule with someone, it might as well be Michael Madsen. He keeps coming up with such great lines!”
The other rule we broke was by casting someone who didn’t look at all like the drawn character in the book. Michael was so larger than life, we just felt he would make a much better partner to Bruce Willis’ detective, I mean, what an ultimate cop team! And he was just an absolute joy to work with. I will miss you Michael, you truly are one of the greats.

I grew up on Robert Redford films, he was the massive superstar of my youth. So to have El Mariachi accepted into his Sundance Film Festival — the most important and prestigious independent film festival in the world — remains one of the biggest highlights of my life.
His sanctuary in Park City was like a dream: You fly in, meet Redford, present your film, and hope good things would follow.
The greatest honor I’ve ever had and will ever have was being awarded at Sundance.
Thank you, Mr. Redford. Your vision and independent spirit forever changed my life.

Drew Struzan was such an amazingly talented and warm hearted guy. Greg Nicotero told me Drew was selling his originals back in 2011, so I went to Drew’s studio with the intention of buying the Spykids art he made back in 2000. Drew was so generous, he refused to have me pay for it, and instead he handed me the originals. (Including a drawing he had made of me in his trademark style!)
Such a gift!
His studio was amazing, and getting to see his process and art space made me decide to buy one of his masterworks. I had him bring out two of my favorites, The THING and FIRST BLOOD.
We took pictures posing like the characters as I mulled them both over, they were both truly stunning. Art books cannot even come close to capturing the detail and magic of his original art.
Since I had worked with Stallone, I went with First Blood, which I feel is one of his very best paintings and portraits.
I will cherish the memories of that magical day spent with him and his wonderful wife, so proudly displaying his incredible art and sharing the stories that went with them.
Here’s to the great Drew Struzan.

Danny Trejo is the first recipient of my annual AZTEC ICON award!
I created this award to go to an exceptional person in our community that truly represents us in the media and the culture.
And Danny is that for us. He’s our Icon and our hero. He’s also the most appreciative and humble person I know. It’s an award I will give out every year at the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio. (I modeled it after the temple in Dusk til Dawn.)
It’s hard to put into words what that night meant to me, to Danny, to my family, and to the entire San Antonio audience. The response to the movie was explosive. But when Danny joined me for the Q and A and then was presented with the Award, it got very emotional for all.
My daughter and I signed merch for an hour and a half after the concert and got to meet and hear people tell us how proud they felt from the whole event and how happy they were that we celebrated and honored @officialDannyT.
It was an unforgettable night. AND we’re gonna do another Desperado Screening and Concert in Austin next month. So stay tuned!

You could always count on Nicky Katt for many things. He’d come in incredibly prepared for a role with costumes and props. He’d come full of inventive and creative ideas that would make his characters pop off the screen and consistently have an audience howling. He’d deliver lines that would constantly sound as unexpected as an ad lib, yet it was the text. And if he did adlib, it was always gold. Even his physical comedy and timing was truly on another level. Nicky was an absolute joy on and off the camera. A true artist. A friend.
It’s very sad to lose Nicky Katt. But I can only be grateful I got to know him, work with him, and watch him create his own truly original brand of magic that will live forever in his favorite medium.
