Team Peters has lost a talented and tenacious member of our alumni family after a years-long battle with cancer. Kelly Davis was an award-winning journalist who served as our Press Secretary from 2023-2024.
For several years before she joined the office, we admired Kelly’s skill in writing stories that made a difference for our region – about homelessness, housing affordability, and criminal justice reform. Investigative reporting was her calling, and her work led to new state laws that have made California a more just and transparent place for everyone. It was an honor that she came to work with us. We appreciated the history, depth, and context she brought to the role of Press Secretary, as well as the kind, compassionate demeanor she brought to the team. We learned from her quiet maturity. She taught us more about how journalism and storytelling work and we taught her a little about how government ought to function; we gained invaluable insights from each other. Today, we’re especially remembering our staff retreat in Washington, D.C. that year. She was a lot of fun on that trip! When she felt called back to journalism, we understood and knew that she would continue to shine a light on injustice and give a voice to those who needed it. She did just that for as long as she could.
Our community has lost a trusted source of information and a fierce advocate for change. We will miss her deeply and send Kelly’s loved ones our warmest condolences.

The PSLF program was created to reward those who pursue careers in public service, yet the Trump Administration’s changes threaten to drive essential employees away. That’s why I introduced a bicameral Congressional Review Act to protect the PSLF program for current and future public servants. This ruling is welcome news in that fight!

This is a victory that safeguards access to the ballot box no matter where you live or how you vote. As the Trump Administration continues to attack voting rights, we must remember that participating in our democracy is a fundamental right that’s worth fighting for.
MAJOR BREAKING: In a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court held that states may count mail-in ballots that are postmarked on or before Election Day, even if they arrive afterward.
Justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh dissented.

Jake was approved for the Veteran's Readiness & Employment (VR&E) program but needed help to get a retroactive induction to recoup time on his GI Bill to use at a later time. My staff worked with him and the VA to get it approved and he received a refund of months on his GI bill equal to $22,331.91!

The VR&E program helps veterans with service-connected disabilities get job training, start their own businesses, and access other critical services as they transition back to civilian life. I introduced the Ensuring Benefits for Disabled Veterans Act to fix an unfair technicality that creates delays when veterans like Jake try to access their hard earned benefits.

I started the bipartisan Congressional Algae Caucus in 2013 based on UC San Diego research into using algae as animal feed, nutraceuticals, and renewable biofuels. The hard part has always been growing enough algae at scale.
Fortunately, Donald Trump is running a live demonstration around the National Mall. Turns out all you need is hot weather, a large surface on shallow water, and a good pool guy!
CNN: CNN independently took the sample of water and consulted with the pool store that regularly tests water to help read the results. It showed phosphate levels far higher than what is recommended to keep algae at bay, based on estimates for a pool that holds 6.5 million gallons of water.
“If there's already some phosphate fertilizer in the water, that's really opportunistic, especially for the blue green algae that can fix nitrogen. So they are having a field day out here.”

Haitians and Syrians came to the U.S. to escape gang violence, terrorism, and religious persecution. Staying in their countries could cost them their lives. Yet despite following every rule and legal avenue, SCOTUS just ruled that they can’t be here.
Trump promised to get rid of the "worst of the worst." I’d say this is far from that.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules 6-3 in favor of the Trump admin on Temporary Protected Status, blocking the lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds, allowing DHS to strip over 350,000 people of legal status even though they utterly failed to follow the required legal procedures.

Earlier this month, the House passed a bipartisan War Powers Resolution and yesterday, the Senate joined us. Bipartisan calls to rein in the President’s war in Iran are growing because it’s reckless and unpopular. Now we must pass a concurrent resolution and bring our servicemembers home.

Trump just refused to sign the most comprehensive housing bill Congress has passed in decades to chase a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Both Republicans and Democrats overwhelmingly supported this bill.
Research shows that voter fraud is extremely rare. We don't need stricter ID requirements that make it harder to vote. We need affordable housing!
BREAKING NEWS: PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has canceled the signing of the housing bill until Congress passes the SAVE America Act.

Housing affordability remains one of the biggest challenges facing San Diegans. That’s why I was glad to support today's bipartisan housing package—the largest in over a decade—to make homeownership more attainable.
I’m especially glad to see it included my Housing Supply Expansion Act to expand access to one of the most affordable forms of homeownership available. While no single bill will solve our housing shortage, this package is an important step toward bringing housing costs down for families.
